I am looking for some insights from soap fans about what elements in the
soap formula seem to work best for them. What keeps your interest? What
do you like least? What elements are a must? Are beautiful sexy people
always required for success?

Thanks

Something I have never seen on U.S. soaps... Check out "tele-novelas" on
Univision. Seems to be a combo of the standard soap and TV mini-series..
i.e. There is a resolution to a storyline in a reasonable amount of time,
usually 3-4 months.
Some time ago on Bravo, I saw and interview with Gabriel Garcia Marquez
about the social significance of the tele-novela, which I believe is the
equivalent of our soaps. BTW, tele-novelas are how I first became hooked
on serialized television. I was eight years old, watching a daily show
based on Maximilian and Carolta's reign in Mexico.

Peter-
I am really interested in other comments you receive to your query. if
you are interested in exploring this method of writing and would like
someone to fill you in on Latin American/Brazilian soaps or do some
translation for you, I am available and intereseted. I am a graduate
student in Iberian and Latin American Literature, but obviously I like to
have fun too.
e-mail to my husband, I don't have an account right now.. I am behind in
my payments to the U.
E. Weinberg.
