Casey had some reason to have his shirt off while he was downstairs. I
think he had some sore muscles and Lyla massaged them and got a heating
blanket for him. Lyla got interested in the studly Casey. There was a
little bit of controversy, for Lyla was about 20 years older than Casey.
Lyla had Katie late in life, so another storyline resulted about having
a baby so late in life. Katie was just a baby when Casey got paralyzed.
Casey was wheeled around in a wheelchair and was outside for a picnic in
Lyla's backyard. A mosquito bit him and he contracted the disease which
took his life from it. He knew that a mosquito had bit him, but he
couldn't move to rid himself of the mosquito. This bothered him
immensely that he was so helpless.
Can anyone remember how Casey got paralyzed? It wasn't the disease
which took his life that caused the paralysis. There was another
reason.
Anyway, Casey contracted that Gillian-Barre syndrome from the mosquito
bite. In his final days, he struggled to breathe and so that tape where
you hear him sound so strange is because he is talking in gasps. He
was on oxygen in a hospital bed at Memorial.
He told Margo that when he was to the point where he could not breathe
on his own and was in a coma, that he didn't want it to continue for
long. He begged Margo to pull the plug when that would happen. She
refused, but he insisted. After much prodding, Margo finally said she
would for him. He was getting distressed that she wouldn't.
The day came when Casey could no longer breathe on his own. The machine
did all of his respiration and he was no longer conscious. He was in a
deep coma by then. He had begged Margo back when he was conscious that
he didn't want to be a vegetable tied to machines, kept alive for years.
This played on Margo for what seemed to be quite some time. She
replayed this scene of his begging in her mind over and over. She
finally decided she must do it, for as Casey had predicted, Lyla and his
parents (about Lyla's age) would never do it.
Margo sneaked into Casey's room. All sorts of tubes were coming in and
out of him, which was Casey's worst nightmare. Every bodily function
and nourishment was handled by machines. Casey was not "there" in the
sense that Casey wanted to be. Margo stares at this scene and she is
still reluctant to do it. Finally she gathers the courage to pull the
plug on the machine. She literally bawled the whole time. An extremely
moving scene.
Eventually it comes out that Margo was the one that pulled the plug.
Lyla almost couldn't forgive her. Remember how Lyla disowned her son
Craig when it was learned that Craig was responsible for the hell caused
with Steve and Betsy. Well, she almost did the same with Margo after
she pulled the plug on Casey.
Casey's parents were in town at the time. Normally his parents lived in
Philadelphia.
Margo was about to find herself in jail. Finally the tape is discovered
by Lyla. Margo didn't realize that the tape she gave Lyla for little
Katie wasn't turned off in time. Casey's pleading to Margo to turn off
the machines should he go into a deep coma was heard on the tape. I'm
not even sure it lead to a trial, but could have without the tape.
Did I get the story right? I do remember the mosquito biting a
paralyzed Casey correctly. The other details are a little fuzzy.

Ya know, after reading Glenn's post, I'm wondering... Did Casey die of
meningitis he contracted after contracting GB Syndrome (probably from the
mosquito, but AFAIK, mosquitoes wouldn't give a person meningitis, but
that may be wrong, too)??

Casey had GBS, which was debilitating but not life-threatening. But then
he contracted encephalitis, which was life-threatening in connection with
the GBS.

You're right... it was encephalitis, not meningitis, but if you read
Glenn's post, which I took as a serious answer with no humor, and if I'm
understanding what it says correctly, it's implied (IMO) that a mosquito
gave Casey the encephalitis. I'm not sure this is biologically possible.
I think you can get other diseases from mosquitoes (malaria?), but
encephalitis??

The Republican witch hunt against President Clinton fair??? Why, it's so
fair that they allowed their Democratic counterparts in the House a
whopping twenty seconds to get their remarks on the record. Meanwhile,
the House Republicans were allowed to comment on the issue ad nauseum.

Yes, actually, you can; in fact, a man just died within the past two or three
weeks in my area from encephalitis contracted from a mosquito bite he
apparently received while working in his garden.
Michael
You can contract viral meningitis from mosquitos. In my hometown about
12 people a year die from meningitis, contracted through mosquito
bites. Here is one story in particular: a girl went to the lake after
school, had fun and went home. The next morning she had a headache and
asked if she didnt have to go to school. Her mom let her stay home.
Two hours later she was dead. And that is how most stories are. You
dont expect it.
I knew diseases could be spread from mosquitoes, but not like this.
Wow...

Yikes! Scary! We're having a mosquito epidemic where I live.
Bingo! I was going to amend what I originally said after I thought of
it more, but you have already done so. Thank you for clarifying that.
We've got the details down correctly now.
Casey as a doctor knew something was wrong for awhile before he went to
Dr. Susan Stewart to have her test him. It was then that the
Gillian-Barre Syndrome was discovered in a test. I think Casey had
guessed it based upon his medical training, but he didn't want to face
it until the test came back.
He could have lived more years in his paralyzed state if it wasn't for
that encephalitis that he contracted through that mosquito. He knew the
mosquito was biting him, but he couldn't get the family's attention to
shoo that mosquito away from him. He was a little concerned, but I
don't think he knew instantly that the mosquito contained the
encephalitis infection until later.
I don't think I have much more to add, until my brain comes to that
part. When my memory is triggered on something, it is like you open a
file cabinet. My mind will keep digging until many of the memories are
retrieved.
To the person that said you wouldn't want us as witnesses to something
you did, I do think you are right. Our minds are like steel traps, at
least when given the right stimulus. Trigger the right keywords and it
is like a computer, at least on my part. I can't speak for my fellow
ratsc colleagues though. No, I'm not relying on any ATWT book either.

According to the IMDB (Internet Movie Database http://www.imdb.com ) Bill
Shanks (Casey) was on Another World in 1991. No other listing for him
other than AW and ATWT.
