Eh... ain't no big thing. In retrospect, I saw this coming a mile way

Hi Cory, I just popped in to check on you, and hope you will make a
speedy recovery. I've become obsessed with politics and have been
spending my online time at the Huffington Post. Next Tuesday I will
be voting for Obama. I hope you won't be missing a primary because of

The nice thing about being away is that I have been spoiler free. I
did see your comment about Tammy's return, but I did not know that

Cory, I did the opposite a few years ago. Voted for my first democrat ever.
I had been voting for many years and it was always republican. The earth
didn't quake and the sky didn't fall on me. My family did get a little
alarmed. Since that time I have mostly voted democrat. I guess you could say

I have to agree, Cory. I don't feel right voting for Hillary or Obama; so my
choice is for McCain, who I hope will win the nomination. He seems to have
the experience the other two lack and I think he believes in what he can
offer the American people.
McCain is batshit crazy. If it ends up between him and Hillary, I

I think he's been through this so many times & been shuffled to the back for
so long that he is bitter. I also think he can't be elected where at some
point in the past he could've been. His day has passed. But, hey, since I
know I want a Democrat in this year, after having Republicans in for 8, ...
that's okay with me.
Hillary has never, ever struck me as a politician... ever. Having
said that, if she is elected POTUS, she may end up surprising me in
the end and leaving me with egg all over my face if she can
demonstrate that she can be an effective politician/POTUS.
> or Obama;
I REALLY, TRULY love Barack Obama. I think his lack of experience may
prove to be a bit of a problem, though, in the end.
Having said THAT, ISTR that California elected an actor, not once, but
twice, as its governor, and that one of those actor-governors was a
wildly popular POTUS. Thus, I think the argument can be made
effectively that one does NOT *need* a lot of political experience to
be elected POTUS.
> so my choice is for McCain, who I hope will win the nomination. He seems to

One thing that McCain DOES have, for sure, that the Hillary and Barack
both lack - is military experience. In THIS day and age, even though
it's probably not THE most important pre-requisite for being POTUS, I
DO find that aspect of a potential POTUS to be more important than in
years past.

I do know about his business failures, and daddy's friends bailing him

I agree, of course, completely with your sentiments about Current Bush being
like RR in all of those wrong ways & even surpassing him. The 3 worst
Presidents in my lifetime, IMO: Nixon, Reagan, GW Bush. [Sigh.] I guess I
should amend that with 'so far'.
> You're right, you are in a distinct minority. :-)
I don't actually believe that we are. I think he (himself, the entity RR) is
something we are deeply divided about as a country. I think those of us who
see RR's years as a horror are just quieter about it now. I know I became so
immediately after his death. YMMV, of course.

That's how it is, unfortunately. Hillary's voting record is pretty
bad: she supports the War on Drugs, staying in Iraq, continuing the
PATRIOT Act, etc. Even Obama voted to renew it, and voted to continue
funding for the war in Iraq. All that aside, Obama seems less likely
to abuse power than Clinton.
Kolbard
> ... I wouldn't mind seeing a Clinton-Obama ticket.
Me either! Clinton/Obama or Clinton/Edwards, either one!
I like that so far the path toward the primaries hasn't been so negative,
muddy, dirty, etc.
Did Edwards go on the record and say that he wouldn't be interested in
VP if he were asked by the Dem nominee??
If so, I truly hope he changes his mind. I think he would make an
interesting VP, and an interesting POTUS after that.
--- Cory
Actually, hasn't Barack Obama opposed the war in Iraq from the
beginning, unlike Hillary, who sided with Dumbya when he first wanted
to invade Iraq?? I thought he did, but I could be wrong. One of my
main problems with Hillary, and supporting her bid for POTUS, is that
she sided with Dumbya and voted to go to Iraq in the beginning,
whereas Obama did not.
Also, just as food for thought here, it's a little harder, I believe,
to not support funding for a war that has been ongoing for weeks,
months, whatever, as that would be seen as "unpatriotic" or
"unAmerican" and unsupportive of our troops. Thus, I give anyone
(including those who initially voted to go to war in Iraq) some slack
if they initially opposed the war, but once we were knee-deep in it as
a country, voted to continue funding for it.
I FIRMLY believe that this military operation in Iraq, since we are so
far into it, should thoroughly be seen to the bitter end now. To cut
and run right now, given the utter unstability of that region as it is
today, would be a horrifying mistake that would haunt not just the
United States, but the world for YEARS to come.
> All that aside, Obama seems less likely to abuse power than Clinton.
>
> Kolbard
I know that nobody has outright accused me of this, and that this has
nothing to do with Kolbard's post, but let me just state for the
record that my opposition to Hillary Clinton as POTUS has NOTHING to
do with the fact that she's a woman.
I voted for Ferraro and her Presidential running mate (was it
Dukakis??) when she was on the ticket as a VP candidate. I have EVERY
confidence in the world that a woman could do just as well a job as
POTUS as a man could, given that it's the right woman in the Oval
Office. I'm not entirely convinced that that "right woman" is Hillary
Clinton.
Just my nickel's worth...
--- Cory
Point taken, Karen. I hadn't thought of it like that. Even *I* said,
when Reagan passed away, that Reagan was a good *man* and that I had a
lot of respect for him as a *person*. Part of that WAS fueled by RR's
candor, WRT his Alzheimer's fight, but part of it was also fueled by
the fact that Bush 2 had been outed by the time Reagan passed away as
a total crackpot.

RG lost me there, as well, but the biggest reason I never supported
his bid for POTUS is because the only thing RG ever, ever, ever had to
"hang his hat on", so to speak, is the fact that he just happened to
be the mayor of NYC on 9/11.
YES, RG handled things well in the aftermath of 9/11. Yes, he is to
be admired and respected and applauded for his handling of 9/11 and
its aftermath, but if he were not mayor of NYC on 9/11, he would have
been just another mayor of NYC.
Have any other mayors of NYC run for POTUS and been elected to the
position before being a member of the US Congress, or VPOTUS, or a
member of Cabinet??

I don't think that Hillary would be likely to abuse power because of what
she & Bill went through in Arkansas when they were defeated for a second
term in the Governorship. That pulled them from their liberal views to
centrist and it further cemented their way of doing 'political' business,
which is through consensus building.
But, realistically, given the Senate & HR the past 12+ years, I don't think
abuse of power and any Democratic candidate is a legitimate fear. It takes
too long to make changes & to get legislation passed!

But it has veered that way enough to make me leery.

Maybe a lot of it has to do with where you were (physically, mentally, and
emotionally) during those years. The RR years were fantastic for me - and a
lot of it had to do with the nation feeling positive and everything going
well for me in my life. :-)

True Ryka, it was a good time in my life too. I was much younger and
feeling a lot more chipper. LOL

Huh? Obama wasn't even in the Senate when the war was proposed.

I don't know *anyone* who supported going into Iraq in 2003. For any
reason. She's trying to cover her ass now. She's less genuine than a
used car salesman.

It doesn't mean that RR or GWB are bad for those reasons either!

We'll have to disagree on RR, and that's all I'm going to say about
that, except...I loved him as governor of CA too. :-)
