all could help clear something up for me.

What is the relation between Barbara Ryan and Kim Hughes?

The above was a very hard family tree to attempt to draw - bet it's even
harder to decipher! Let me explain...

Kim is Barbara's aunt. Kim's sister Jennifer's first marriage (to a
Mr.Ryan) resulted in two children, Barbara and Rick (none of these people
except Barbara have been on the show in years - maybe decades).

Jennifer's second marriage, to Bob Hughes, resulted in one child, Frannie
Hughes. (Also off the show, but not for more than 4 or 5 years). Whilst
Jen and Bob were married, Kim (Jen's sister, you remember) had an affair
with Bob. Kim got pregnant (about the same time Jen was pregnant with
Frannie), but she lost the child. Or so we all thought, including the
writers at the time. Lo and behold, years later (and dozens of sets of
writers on down the line), it turned out the child had been stolen at
birth and switched for a stillborn infant. Uncannily, the now adult baby
girl turned out to be an exact double for her cousin (and half-sister),
Frannie. (Even more uncannily, a few recasts later, these two characters
looked NOTHING alike. And NO ONE ever mentioned it!) (Sabrina has
been off-screen for a few more years than Frannie - they live together
in Montega, tending to the sick and needy.)

Jen died. Kim married Dan, her true love. Dan died. Kim married Nick,
her true love. Nick died. Kim married Bob, her true love and former
brother-in-law. Bob is still alive, though some of the dialogue
he's been handed over the years has made this occasionally tough to call.
They had a son, Chris. (All of these people are still characters on the
show.)

Who, then, is Barbara's father? Was it someone Jennifer was married
to before Bob? So - Kim is Babs' aunt, and Bob is Babs' former
stepfather?

Barbara's father is Michael (i think) Ryan. Jennifer's first husband.
Kim and Bob had an affair while Jennifer was pregnant with Frannie.
And Kim got pregnant, and John Dixon agreed to marry her. At the
birth of Kim/Bob's kid, The doctor (not John) said the baby was still
born. We believed this for about 10-15 years when the writers decided
it was a switch at birth, which also explains Sabrina English accent.
So! to wrap up, Chris and Sabrina are complete brother and sister,
albeit a generation apart, Tom is a half brother (Lisa and Bob)
Frannie a half sister (Jennifer and Bob) and Barbara cousin to all.
Wouldn't christmas be interesting if Tom really had married Barabara
all those years ago????

Barbara's father is the late Dr. Chuck Ryan, who was a companion of
Bob's during their residency at Memorial Hospital in the early
sixties.
