It is with great sadness that I just read about the death of Susan
Hufford, wife of former GL star Michael Zaslow, who played Roger Thorpe
once upon a time, and who valiantly fought against ALS, or Lou Gehrig's
disease in the late 90's. Hufford passed away on 11/28 after battling
cancer. Sadly, the eighth anniversary of Zas' untimely death is on
12/6.

http://www.soapcentral.com/gl/news/2006/1127-hufford.php

The story about her death says that Hufford was survived by one
daughter, Marika. In ferreting out information on their other
daughter, Helena, I sadly learned that she died in 2004 at the age of
19. It's possible her death was exacerbated by a bout with depression
after her father's death, but I cannot find irrefutable evidence of
that, as I've been reading conflicting reports about her death for the
last couple of hours.

In happier news related to Zas, there's a book out that chronicles his
fight against ALS. It was written by Hufford using journals that
Michael kept during his fight against ALS. Information about the book
can be obtained by going to http://www.michaelzaslow.com/ or
http://www.notthatmananymore.com/ (you can also read excerpts of it at
http://www.iuniverse.com/bookstore/book_detail.asp?isbn=0595340504 ).
It has also received mostly favorable reviews from readers at

Oh my god, no.

I posted about her death a number of times. People tried to keep the info
quiet out of respect for a family that had been through more than enough.
I'm sure that's why you're running into conflicting reports.

Life truly bites sometimes, and for certain people... I can't find any
information about her age, FYI. Maybe you could help there, if you're
so inclined. At any rate, whether we know her age or not, I'm guessing
she was still pretty young yet... "too young", so to speak, for cancer
to take her life.

Maybe this is when I was homeless and becoming sick, because I
COMPLETELY missed this bit of news.

Oh, I wouldn't doubt it. The reports I've read indicate either a car
accident or a drug overdose (but I haven't read anything to lead me to
suspect/wonder if it was "street drugs", and in all honesty, if she was
on medication for her depression, well, it was probably that
antidepressant medication that she took, IF in fact it WAS a drug
overdose), FWIW.

I might be able to. Generally, she & Zas were contemporaries, though.

Could be. It happened over Christmas break, her freshman year, I think at
Bennington College. Helena was VERY close to MZ & her sister was VERY close
to Susan - although, in general they were also a close family. It was near
the holidays & it was right after the anniversary of her father's death, ...
I'm thinking the 6th anniversary of his death, which would mean that she
died in December 2004.

There was no car accident. It happened at home. There were no street drugs
involved, nor did she have any history with drugs or partying. She was very
sensitive & a talented musician if I am remembering correctly. Violin or
Viola, I think. She was depressed & being treated for it.

That pretty much has to be enough to say, without coming out & saying. <G>

Still breaks my heart what that family has been through.

Did you happen to know that Susan was even ill, Donna? I, myself, was
*totally* clueless. It was a HUGE shock to read about her death (but
an even bigger shock, I'll admit, to read about what happened to
Helena).

Which is what I've been reading, FYI and FWIW, so you're timeline is
right on target. I don't know if it was before or after Christmas,
though (and it doesn't really even matter, in the grand scheme of
things). Also FWIW, I *was* homeless in 12/04 (from 5/04 to 7/06, to
be exact, but part of that was spent in the hospital and rehab facility
[10/05 - 7/06]), so that's why news of her death slipped under my
radar.
