That is sad. I remember her as Holly too. Mart Hulwitz was Ed. She was
pretty young at 61.

Yes, 61 seems very young now.
Was she the actress, that played Holly, when she got raped by Roger T??? the first time? :) She was very young then... and so was I.

No. Maureen played Holly then.

Odd i always felt that Lynn was the real Holly. Never cared much for
Maureen's Holly

Yes, I realize that now. I just read the Wikipedia article on Roger and Holly. Brought back a lot of memories... good memories...

I was searching youtube for her and then got lost in watching Guiding
Light videos of Roger, the original Alexandria, Holly, etc. I spent
nearly 2 hours watching various clips. Boy do I miss Guiding Light.
Even watched a video of Maureen Garrett and Michael Zaslow. Brought
back many memories.

I think I've lost whole weekends watching old clips. I'll bet I know
the ones you were watching, the series of clips from when Alex blasted
Roger at the Country Club in front of all of Springfield. I watched GL
and ATWT my whole life; I don't remember a time when they weren't part
of my life, even as a small child, when I wasn't really watching. I
sometimes still come home from work and reach for the remote to watch
the recording of today's episodes out of sheer habit.

I always felt that ATWT was the appetizer and GL was the meat and
potatoes. Even when I lived in a market where GL aired in the morning,
I always watched my recording AFTER GL. It's funny; if I were to list
my top 10 most compelling, brilliantly acted storylines from both
soaps, I think more would be from ATWT (the Douglas Cummings story,
Angel Lange's story, Lily finding out about Iva and Josh) than from
GL, but GL's list would be more about characters than particular
storylines (Roger, Buzz, Harley, Ed), though the Sonni/Solita story
would be up there, as would be Roger's rape of Holly.

Actually, though, you have to take the whole storyline from the
beginning of their romance (maybe even his arrival in town), through
the rape, through Rita's rape, all the way to April 1, 1980, when
Roger fell from the cliff. See how with GL, it's often not just "a
storyline", but a character study that lasted several years. I'd love
to piece together Roger's scenes from those years to watch how the
character descended into madness. As much as I adored Zaslow and was
glad to have Roger back as one of the most fascinating characters in
TV, any genre, if he had stayed dead, it would have been a striking
portrayal of a man would had his whole life in front of him and ruined
himself with his tortured jealousies and anger.

Anyway, I haven't had a chance to post about GL in so long, so forgive
my rambling. I'm with you, I miss GL terribly.

One of the things I have remembered was the weird wedding between Roger and
that woman who was a cat burglar or jewel thief. It was the oddest, most
entertaining wedding I had ever seen on a soap opera. I miss ATWT the
most. I liked how the villains were not pure evil but had a softer side two.
Unlike Victor on Y&R who I often ff.

You mean Jenna who ended up marrying Buzz.

I am 58 years old and watched GL with my grandmother when I was about
8 years old. I could remember her getting her work done in the am and
sitting in her rocking chair with her apron on and just crying some
times at the storylines.

I also watched the Edge of Night and Secret Storm until their demise.

I really wish that we could have had a monthly 1 hour show of GL on
OWN or anywhere for that matter. Things were getting so good with GL
in the end. Even though they knew they were ending, the stories
where just great.

This clip will make you miss GL all over again. What a year!

I've talked to my mother about how the suits had no faith in soaps in
the early days, because they didn't think housewives would take time
out to watch. My mom did what your grandmother did, plan her work in
the morning, then put us down for naps and do her ironing or folding
while watching ATWT and GL. Amazing how housewives were smarter than
TV execs.

>I also watched the Edge of Night and Secret Storm until their demise.

Oh, don't get me started on EON. I've watched a whole lotta those
clips on YouTube. My father used to tease my mom and me about watching
soaps (you remember, back when there used to be these shows called
ATWT and GL) and we remind him that he was so hooked on EON that he
rigged up a tape recorder to the timer on the stove with a big
extension cord that ran through the kitchen, dining room and into the
living room, so that we could record the audio and play it at dinner.
They all forget what freaks they were!

I agree. Once they brought Phillip back, man did it get good.

Years ago I was discussing soaps during lunch with my coworkers. One
of them had a grandmother who was a devoted GL fan. IIRC, she started
listening to the show in the 1940's on NBC Radio, followed it to CBS
Radio, and watched it on TV in the 1950's. She passed away years
before the curtains would come down on her beloved soap.

I love your ramblings, as I suspect many CBS soap fans do. ATWT and GL
were always my favorites, and initially ATWT might have been No. 1, but
in later years it was GL. I really miss Roger, Alan, Buzz, Harley and
all... still.

I dearly loved the romance between Buzz and Jenna, because I'm so fond
of both of the actors.

I so agree... it's a real shame there wasn't a cable channel willing to
pick up the show, or even to re-run all the shows P&G still had. :(

I miss GL and ATWT too. GL was my favorite. Aren't they selling ATWT
DVDs with special moments? I read Kim Zimmer's book, and that gave me a
small GL fix. Someone on a site linked to on youtube Holly and Roger in
that foreign country where Alex wanted Holly to set Roger up. That was
just wonderful. Other soaps can't compare. I'm lukewarm on Y and R, and
B and B just gives me the willies.

Yes, last month SoapClassics released a DVD collection containing 20
ATWT episodes. Now they have released a second collection with 5
Christmas episodes from 1985-2007.
