I think I've lost whole weekends watching old clips. I'll bet I know
the ones you were watching, the series of clips from when Alex blasted
Roger at the Country Club in front of all of Springfield. I watched GL
and ATWT my whole life; I don't remember a time when they weren't part
of my life, even as a small child, when I wasn't really watching. I
sometimes still come home from work and reach for the remote to watch
the recording of today's episodes out of sheer habit.
I always felt that ATWT was the appetizer and GL was the meat and
potatoes. Even when I lived in a market where GL aired in the morning,
I always watched my recording AFTER GL. It's funny; if I were to list
my top 10 most compelling, brilliantly acted storylines from both
soaps, I think more would be from ATWT (the Douglas Cummings story,
Angel Lange's story, Lily finding out about Iva and Josh) than from
GL, but GL's list would be more about characters than particular
storylines (Roger, Buzz, Harley, Ed), though the Sonni/Solita story
would be up there, as would be Roger's rape of Holly.
Actually, though, you have to take the whole storyline from the
beginning of their romance (maybe even his arrival in town), through
the rape, through Rita's rape, all the way to April 1, 1980, when
Roger fell from the cliff. See how with GL, it's often not just "a
storyline", but a character study that lasted several years. I'd love
to piece together Roger's scenes from those years to watch how the
character descended into madness. As much as I adored Zaslow and was
glad to have Roger back as one of the most fascinating characters in
TV, any genre, if he had stayed dead, it would have been a striking
portrayal of a man would had his whole life in front of him and ruined
himself with his tortured jealousies and anger.
Anyway, I haven't had a chance to post about GL in so long, so forgive
my rambling. I'm with you, I miss GL terribly.
