In light of Shirl and my banter early today, you KNOW I'm not happy
this is true.

Mark, you know it was just a matter of time.
I know I've been much less optimistic about the future of the show
than you since this whole transition took place. But really, a lot of
damage has been done. As you've said on occasion, with no
disagreement,
the acting itself remains stellar. The question is, how long can that
alone
sustain the show when, one by one, more and more unfortunate decisions
continue to be made?

No sh*t!
Shirl
Hire him at GL, and have Melody cast as a mature Melinda Lewis.
MsLiz
And she could play opposite Mindy's old love interest, Nick, played by
Vincent Irizarry.

And fire all of the rest of the cast to pay her salary. <G> Don't think so.

What! I thought she worked for the sheer joy of it!
And she's getting long in the tooth, so has lost her commercial value.

I'll jump in and make the point that this, too, alas, is a sign of
Creeping Generic Soap-ism. Almost all the soaps have started doing
this: counting on stars' acting ability to make bad writing work and
counting on stars' popularity to make unpalatable plots palatable.
There really is an assumption in the soap world now that once we
"fall" for an actor/character, we will continue to watch him/her no
matter what character-destroying dreck the character is involved in.
(Case in point: All My Children truly thinks that because Michael E.
Knight is a very good actor and quite popular, fans won't care that
his character is now a torturer-murderer. Yeeeeeeowwwwww!)
At the risk of being a broken record: This isn't what Y&R used to be
about. I'm sorry to see it heading in this direction.
Michael

If it's true, how long will Melody stick around?
Michael
That's why it has been *so* frustrating to hear people say that because
the performances were so good, they could accept the ridiculous,
far-fetched, illogical, etc. premises. On occasion, sure ... but when
the acting alone is consistently the only saving grace, they're in
trouble (IMO).

I've apologized for being a broken record, too, Michael. It's sad to see
it being destroyed like this.

It's true, and it'll be interesting, since MTS has more of a story now
than she's had in a long while.
Shirl
I've forgotten the words but the Melody lingers on?

This senate story, and it's bizarre intermingling with the Clear
Springs story, is making me a little crazy.
What platform do these candidates have? What are they running for?
Is there any issue besides that little town in Wisconsin? How can
this be an important enough campaign that would cause them to miss the
funeral of their son and ex-stepson?
Bizarre!
I won't buy this political story until we see some rallies, some
issues, some dirty fights, whatever.
The three political consultants are TOTALLY WASTED. What prime talent
to waste!

Yes, with sincere apologies Google tells us the messages did not
post, and we should try again later. Which I did.
And then of course, it turned out google lied...and each posting made
it.
I'm very sorry for the clutter!
No worries, Mark. It isn't only happening to you. Easy enough to just
delete the dups.
Shirl
You know, this Ed Scott rumor has so much "real-feel" to it. First,
the "new methodology" whole creative team has already let go of most
of the old guard behind the cameras. Second, Latham quickly
established an Associate EP (Josh Griffith, right?)...which seems to
me probably further diminished Scott's role. Third, Scott has always
been more of a "director" than a producer...almost every actor
interviewed has talked about how his notes have nurtured and shaped
their performances.
Ahhh...but the "old way" of performing probably doesn't sit so well
with the new regime, right? I could imagine Scott having LOADS of
problems with the inconsistencies (Korbel is not in trouble one day--
then he's resigning the next day--plot, plot, plot). I also get the
sense, from interviews with him and how others have talked about him,
that he's a bit of a curmudgeon.
So...I don't think that goes over well with the new regime.
Plus, I really think the new regime holds on to the old guard long
enough to pick their brains, and then dismisses them when they feel
like they've "got it". Plus, I imagine Scott had something like a
multi-year contract that's probably now coming to an end.
When Jack Smith was fired, I said I hoped that at least Alden and
Scott would stay. When Alden was fired, I said that I hoped that
Scott would stay. In both cases, I said the dismissals worried me,
and I also said that I feared the next firing was imminent.
Now, I'm just really feeling where there is smoke there is fire. KEEP
ED SCOTT. REHIRE KAY ALDEN. Work together. Or, to quote a Danny
Romalotti song (which quoted a famous LA beating victim): "Can't we
all get along?"
He's out, Mark. If anyone involved with this "transition" were
interested in having them all work together, their biggest assets would
not have been "let go" in the first place. It's done, and what you see
is what you get.

It's okay. They will hire him at B&B.
Isn't that the way it works with everyone at Y&R?
Moi aussi!
I have a message for Google groups and also Yahoo Mail and it is no
love letter!
Diva
I don't think Ed Scott would be that desperate for work!!
And what a pathetic loss it is for the viewers! When the ratings drop will
they notice and then try to "repair" the damage? By then it may be too late
and even us die-hards will be gone. Bill Bell must be turning over in his
grave!

Not to worry - I was just curious, as I was seeing this in another

So I presume this means you have confirmed information, not yet
released to the press, that he's out. More than rumor?
What a shame....

Way to go Mark!

Not at all. Just really, really disappointed. I'm guessing hair and
makeup and wardrobe are next.... And don't forget Doug Davidson!
What about the rumors that Don Diamont and Thad Luckinbill are leaving? Gee,
with Paul and JT gone, who will be the resident P.I.?
MarkH:
> Not at all. Just really, really disappointed. I'm guessing hair and

What's with the is/would be, was/might be stuff? It's DONE.
I'm sad for the people who put so much of their hearts and souls into it
for so long. To some, it was far more than "just a job", and there's no
way this new group could have the kind of attachment or care-and-concern
that one does for something they've put 10, 15 or 20-or-more years of
time and energy into ... JMO, but that comes across well enough on
screen that many long-time viewers feel that they've been "ditched"
after their years of devotion, too.
As for the show itself, I'm probably not as disappointed as you that
they let him go because at this point, I don't think ES's input alone
was going to keep Y&R from going down the path LML has been determined
to take it from the moment she was hired. She clearly was/is not
interested in any collaboration or meshing of old/new methodology.
Shirl
You know, if Kevin weren't such an underhanded unscrupulous guy, he would
probably be good at it!!
It's ashame that LML doesn't care as much about the show as do the longtime
viewers!
I gather (haven't seen it) that Soaps in Depth is confirming the
firing.
I'm sad. I did want to see old and new methodologies blend. I guess
I'm left with Summer 06...which for me were halcyon days. A sign of
what could have been....
Ever try to stir up oil and water?
Diva
Don't know if any of the rags have confirmed it yet.
> I'm sad. I did want to see old and new methodologies blend.
I did too, but it was clear very early on that that wasn't going to
happen.
