Y&R Will There be a Katherine Chancellor Replacement?http://www.thestar.com/entertainment/television/2013/05/10/jeanne_cooper_will_young_and_the_restless_katherine_chancellor_live_on.html

Will Katherine Chancellor live on?

CBS is still determining how to replace the irreplaceable. But they’ve been there before. Soap operas are intensely malleable art forms, twisting and turning sagas that have survived only through the absolute suspension of disbelief by loyal viewers.
The one constant are the characters breathed spectacularly to life by people like Cooper, who have become familiar friends. A friend that you will be more than willing to forgive for a few crazy plot lines and one arched eyebrow too many.

But how do you replace the grand dame of the most watched daytime soap opera on television?
CBS hasn’t figured it out yet.

I will miss her so. Her commanding prescience, her elegant attire, her confident energy her portrayal of what is capable for a woman in her eighties.

We were having a discussion about just this subject amongst us soap
watchers in the neighborhood last night. Somebody brought up a very
interesting point. I said that I thought Michael Learned would be a
natural fit to fill Jeanne Cooper's shoes on Y&R. She'd been accepted
already in that role by viewers. Someone pointed out that Kay Chancellor
is not at all a young woman and the part cannot go on and on indefinitely.
Wouldn't it be a more natural thing for this character to be brought to an
organic conclusion now, in honor of the original actress' demise?

What do you all think?

Michael Learned wasn't accepted by all viewers. I've been seeing people
post elsewhere that they think it would dishonor Jeanne Cooper's memory
to have her role recast, even temporarily. I agree and think TPTB should
let Kay now die too.

I agree with the no-recast opinion. JC was Katherine Chancellor
to the viewers, and given her age (and the age of the character),
it would make sense to honor both the actor by not recasting
and the storyline to go with the death of the character.

There are SO many storylines that could come of letting go.

Cane vs. Jill at Chancellor for the CEO position. Jill is not
the type to just back off.

A nice inheritance/trust fund for Chloe and Delia from Mrs. C.
This could mean the END (PLEASE!) of the idiotic storyline
of the bungling breakins and thefts of Chloe and Kevin.

Murph as sounding board and voice of reason to the young-uns.

Jill vs. Esther. lol

Victor and Adam trying to take over Chancellor while Cane is
learning the ropes.

And on and on.

Nyssa, who thinks it's the right thing to do

I loved those Chanel suits with a little pizazz. Great for a night out, though she wore them for a business lunch.

I loved the way she always walked around The Chancellor Mansion dressed to
the nines, jewelry dripping. I suppose you can do that when you're rich and
others do everything for you. I wouldn't know, mind you...but I wouldn't
mind trying it on for size. :-)

Diva,

It resonated with me to read "I will miss her so."

Yes, no one can replace her, but I was quite surprised at how easily I
accepted Michael Learned. It would have to be someone special, indeed.

I have been watching "In Treatment, an HBO series that ended in 2011. No one and I mean NO ONE cold replace Gabriel Byrne who plays psychiatrist Paul Weston.

Don't get started.Te series is addictive.

Those are not the best examples. Bond, the character is near-ageless.
Leno was 20 years younger then Carson.

Do you think the show should treat Katherine like the Pope or Soviet
leader where you continue to replace them with someone the same age
whose gonna last a couple years?

Make Jill the new Katherine and be done with it.

I always thought Jill should be the owner of Chancellor. Was she not married to Phillip Chancellor, when a drunk Kay killed him in her car, when she ran off a cliff?

I feel it would be a terrible mistake to replace her. I don't think her fans would keep on lovin the character if played by another. Who ( besides Betty White ) is old enough to look the part. She is even a few yrs, older than me and I'm older than dirt ! LOL

So....am I to understand it correctly from the Phelps interview that
they are not going to recast Katherine?? No possibility of Michael
Learned taking on the role?? They will give closure to Katherine (she
will pass) on the show??

Or did I misunderstand something??

I'm glad. Kay was an intelligent, shrewd businesswoman, who had her
cantankerous side when she wanted to be. No disrespect to Michael Lerned,
but her portrayal was too soft and motherly. I couldn't see her as a
tough, savvy businesswoman, running a multi-billion dollar conglomerate.

Let Katherine Chancellor go with Jeanne Cooper to that boardroom in the
sky.

True. I would be good either way, but since Katherine was young and old on
the show, people do die. As to the tough businesswoman, that was a fairly
new development with Katherine. All we ever saw for most of the years was
her trusted lawyer and the CEO of Chancellor doing all of the running
decision making etc., then all of a sudden there is corruption and Katherine
became a titan of industry almost overnight, sort of like Nikki after a
couple of internet lessons from Brad. It never rang true with me, but I
liked the character of Katherine very much so if they're not recasting, I
think Murph should go the the big fishing hole in the sky with his broken
heart too...if not, he can marry one of the ladies that is hiding their
pregnancy from the real daddy, or maybe he's Summer's dad. ;-)
