FORMER "Family Matters" co-star Michelle Thomas
died Tuesday after a battle with stomach cancer, a
CBS spokesman confirmed yesterday.
The twentysomething Thomas played Steve Urkel's
(Jaleel White) girlfriend Myra for five seasons on
"Family Matters," the popular ABC sitcom that moved
to CBS in its last season.
The series went off the air last year.
Recently, Thomas had been starring in the CBS soap
opera "The Young & The Restless" as Callie, an
aspiring singer and the love interest of Malcolm
(Shemar Moore), with whom Callie had had a previous
love affair.
Thomas also played the role of Justine, Theo's
girlfriend, on NBC's "Cosby Show" and appeared in
"Roseanne" and "Dream Date," a made-for-TV movie
with Clifton Davis, Kadeem Hardison and Tempestt
Bledsoe.
She also appeared in an episode of the ABC series "A
Man Called Hawk" with Avery Brooks.
Thomas' father was a member of the R&B group Kool
& The Gang.
She studied jazz and dance at the Broadway Dance
Center in New York and was crowned Miss
International Queen in 1985.
She made her feature film debut in 1991's "Hangin' with
the Homeboys" and played the lead role in "Betsey
Brown" at the American Music Theatre Festival in
Philadelphia.

What very sad news. I guess we
never really know what some of
these actors and actresses are
going through. Watching her
on the show, I would never have
imagined that she was so sick.
It would have been nice if she
had been able to finish that plot
with Malcolm with him getting "Callie"
out of her contract, turning
the authorities on "Trey" and
sending "Callie" on her way
to do more singing, all while
Michelle was still on the show.
But fictional plots and stories seem
rather unimportant in the wake
of such sobering news.
Side note: Reeeaaaallllly bad timing for Y&R today, as Olivia was
exclaiming that if felt great to now have Callie out of her life for
good [the concert tour].
I agree, it was very sad when Olivia was talking like that about Callie.
They could have done a little last minute editing. It was very insensitive.
I hope they at least honor her by dedicating an upcoming episode in her
memory.

TV Actress Michelle Thomas Dies
NEW YORK (AP) - Actress Michelle Thomas, who had television roles in ``The
Young & The Restless,'' ``The Cosby Show'' and ``Family Matters,'' died of
cancer at age 29.
Miss Thomas died Tuesday in Manhattan, according to her publicist, Kahdijah
Bell.
Miss Thomas appeared on the CBS soap opera ``The Young & The Restless'' as
Callie; on ``The Cosby Show'' as Justine, who was the girlfriend of Theo - the
character played by Malcolm Jamal Warner; and on ``Family Matters'' as Myra,
who was the girlfriend of Steve Urkel - the character played by Jaleel White.
She had guest appearances in a number of other TV shows, including
``Roseanne,'' and also performed in music videos, Los Angeles theater
productions and several movies, including ``Hangin' with the Homeboys.''
She had recently received an NAACP Image Award nomination for outstanding
actress in a daytime drama series.
``We are terribly shocked and deeply saddened by Michelle's death and our
thoughts and prayers are with her family,'' said William J. Bell, co-creator
and senior executive producer of ``The Young & The Restless.'' ``Michelle was a
great talent with a bright future ahead of her. She will be missed by all of
us.''
Miss Thomas was born in Boston and raised in New York. She attended the
Montclair School of Arts and the Broadway Dance Center.
She is survived by her parents, Phynjuar Thomas, a stage actress, and Dennis
Thomas, who was a member of the 1970s funk band Kool & the Gang, of Weekhawken,
N.J.
A memorial service will be scheduled at a later date. "
Also, if you go to any search engine and type in "Michelle Thomas", you will
find many web sites for her.

I understand your feelings, but . . .
Callie the character doesn't have to die because Michelle did. It's
very sad that Michelle died, but with that said . . .
She didn't play the role for a very long time, and I don't think it's
inappropriate for "the show to go on" with the actress currently
playing the part. Sure, the characters of soap actors who die are
often written out - but those are characters where the actors are
highly identified in the role . . . like Saul on B&B, and HB on GL.
Yes, it's sad for Michelle to die at such a young age. But if Y&R
forges ahead with the character with another actress, I don't think
they should be criticized for it. With THAT said, I didn't find the
whole Callie storyline very compelling in the first place and wouldn't
object if they dumped it, either.

I am assuming you mean not be on the show - I never liked the
character of Callie and I think her just riding off into the sunset
would be the best

Take away "my heart" to reply
That's exactly what I was thinking! I don't know how much time elapsed between
filming her last episodes and her death, but how on earth did she have the
strength to work such long hours? And, she really did appear so healthy. This
is such sad news.

Nothing about her death on it yet, other than the fans writing to the
guestbook.
Punch
I heard it on the National News on the radio early Thursday morning.
They mentioned she stared on Y&R, but I couldn't at that time place her
has Callie. It was mentioned, and if you were like me, you never would
have realized it was her when you heard it. I didn't....
Probably because you only watch cartoons and can't read newspapers.
Dane
I didn't get a chance to watch it!!! So, did they recast Callie...with
the girl that took her place temporarily??
LOL!!!
The only one who stares on Y&R is the Bug, much too frequently.

Well the news here didn't mention her death - I thought they would but
nothing - probably because of the whole 1/100th inch of ice -
weathermen go crazy here.
