It always bothered me that many of these interiors have stairways to
no-where (Brooke's house, first floor to second floor doesn't 'coincide
with exterior architecture) and dead ends (the stairs going up from the
right of Adam's penthouse). Maybe I should pay less attention.

Indeed, the Bell family own their shows and enjoy the full monetary benefits,
but it wasn't always like that. Columbia Television Pictures (now Sony
Picture Television) and CBS Television reaped huge financial rewards from
Bill Bell writing the cash cow that's Y&R. In the late 1980's, Bill Bell Jr.
(MAB's future husband) felt his father should get a bigger piece of the pie.
The Bells stopped delivering scripts for production until they can share in
the gross profits. The studio executives saw Bell as an employee and
threatened to fire him. Bell held his ground and TPTB agreed to pay him
a greater percentage of the gross profits. From then on, the Bell family
became a full partner with Columbia and an owner of Y&R.
