I have a sense of how many of you feel about many of these individual topics,
but wonder how related some of these are (i.e., sure, most people who love
Janet hate Laurel, but do most people who hate Laurel love Dixie? I'll find
out!)
ALL ABOUT ALL MY CHILDREN
Pick the closest one (1) from each set of possibilities:
1A. Noah and Julia are terrific and fascinating together! I look forward to
all their scenes together.
1B. Noah and Julia have potential, but TPTB don't seem to know what to do
with them. I enjoy some of their scenes, and hope that they get involved in an
interesting plotline soon.
1C. Noah and Julia have bored me together from day one, and are MUCH more
effective apart. Break them up quick, and never, never, let them back together!
1D. They're both dead weight, together or apart. Lose them.
2A. When Laurel died, I was miserable. I loved that character.
2B. When Laurel died, I was sad for Trevor and Michael, but didn't care much
one way or the other about Laurel herself.
2C. When Laurel died, I threw a party. Yippidee-doodah!!
3A. Brooke is one of the best characters on AMC, always well-acted (and
well-behaved.) Go Brooke!
3B. Brooke is decently acted but the writing is so inconsistent. I used to
like her but now I'm drifting to the AFAC side. Somebody save her!
3C. Hateherhateherhateherhateher. Always have, always will.
3D. I like the character of Brooke, but Julia Barr doesn't do her justice. I
suggest a recast.
4A. Erica is the reason I watch AMC. She is truly the Diva of Daytime, and
the driving force behind AMC's popularity.
4B. Erica just isn't as interesting these days as she used to be. For a few
years now she's been kind of a perennial victim, and that's just not Erica's
forte. Stop gunning for an Emmy and let her be a bitch again!
4C. I've never understood the fascination with Erica, and have certainly
never subscribed to it. She could disappear tomorrow and I'd never notice.
5A. With one or two obvious exceptions, AMC characters generally have
fabulous hair--chic, well-conditioned, shiny, enviable, shampoo-commerical
quality hair.
5B. I hardly notice the hair on AMC anymore. Some cuts are flattering,
others aren't, but it's not really all that much better or worse than on other
shows.
5C. The hookers on the bus in the bad part of my town have better hair cuts
than most of the AMC characters. Whoever mans the Hair Chair should be fired,
pronto.
6A. David Canary (Adam/Stuart) is a terrific actor, and an extremely sexy man.
6B. David Canary (Adam/Stuart) is a really good actor, but I don't find him
attractive.
6C. David Canary (Adam/Stuart) is an overly mannered actor relying on
gestural tics to create a repetitive performance. Over-rated!
7A. AMC's set design is top-notch. The interiors are fun and fascinating,
and really encapsulate an atmosphere appropriate to the characters living (or
working there).
7B. AMC's set design is perfunctory at best. I don't really notice it,
except for maybe that weird fold in Erica's purple wall. It's good enough, I
guess.
7C. AMC's set design sucks. The interiors are ugly, unrealistic, and do
nothing to create a sense of mood or character.
7D. I have never (before just this second) thought about set design on AMC
... I can hardly venture a guess as to whether it's good or bad. I have no
opinion at all.
8A. AMC is at its best when it delves into serious social problems and
explores them through storylines related to major characters.
8B. AMC is at its best when it cranks up the melodrama, passion, murder, and
other unrealistic but Soap-worthy storylines.
8C. AMC is at its best when it almost becomes comedy and emphasizes camp
charicatures and over-the-top performances.
9A. The character I miss most is Arlene.
9B. The character I miss most is Kendall.
9C. The character I miss most is Cecily.
9D. The character I miss most is Liz.
10A. It's commendable that at long last TPTB have a front-burner gay
character, and they're doing a fabulous job with the Micheal storyline. Keep
up the good work!
10B. Although I'm enjoying the Michael character, it's stupid that he hasn't
been involved in a romance yet, when everybody else on the show beds down
without two weeks of showing up. Give him a boyfriend!
10C. I just don't like this Michael guy. His character doesn't interest me at
all, and in fact, his storylines just kind of drag the show down. Ditch him!
10D. I don't feel comfortable watching a gay character. I don't know if that
makes me homophobic or not, but I just can't watch when Michael's on--or
Kevin, for that matter.
11A. Liza is a real asset to AMC. She enlivens all of her scenes; I'm so
glad she's back--I always thought she was fabulous!
11B. Liza is horrible, not just her character, but Marcy Walker's acting and
looks. She always sucked. I don't understand how anyone can like her!
11C. I didn't much like Liza before, but she's okay now. I'm looking forward
to seeing how the character progresses.
11D. The character of Liza has gone *way* downhill. She was good in the old
days, but this latest incarnation as shrill harpy dominatrix--it does nothing
for me.
Phew! 11 Easy Questions ... 1000s of detailed calculations for me to make.
Hope I find out something illuminating!

I must add a 4D here: I *don't* agree with "let her be a bitch again,"
but rather, something like:
4D. Recognize that Susan Lucci's greatest strength as a (somewhat
limited) actress is her ability to do light comic turns. As Erica ages,
still as the keystone of AMC, give the character a chance to display
other sides that highlight this quality.

7A-1/2: Some sets are top notch, some are perfunctory, but it's clear
that a significant amount of thought and planning go into the creation
of an environment for each character/place.
>7B. AMC's set design is perfunctory at best. I don't really notice it,

Well, I will go with mostly A, but with the caveat that A works best
when sweetened with a generous dollop of (C): humor and not taking
itself too seriously. Rereading the c definition, let me rephrase that:
I don't mean campt and over-the-top at all. I mean a gentle humor that I
remember so well from the early '80s, in the original Opal era, when
characters could lightly make fun of the situation ("I feel like my life
is a soap opera!").
>9B. The character I miss most is Kendall.
>
Although I had the most admiration for Arlene as an actor, I miss
Kendall because her existence created the most dramatic tension (and
brought out a very interesting side of Erica...since I wasn't on ratsa
during that storyling I never got a chance to vent, but judging from
other posts I might have disagreed with the blanket condemnation of
Erica. I thought Erica handled Kendall's emergence very well in most
cases, and I positively *admired* the way she admitted she could not
love K but tried her best to be fair to her).

7D: The set design is extremely uneven. Sometimes it's wonderful
(remember Tad's old loft after Opal redecorated?), but most of the time
it's recycled, dirty, un-meshed with character, and thin on the little
touches that make real living spaces out of sets. In contrast, GH's sets
are a constant feast for the eyes.

How about 8D: all of the above, and sometimes 8E, none of the above. AMC
is an organic, evolving experience. I've been watching it for more than
20 years, and it is what it is.

Not fabulous, but on points, excellent. I still don't like Chris Bruno
the actor, although I do like Michael the part. I wish they'd let him
play more than 2 scenes running without having him cry. How did he live
through Desert Storm?

Add a touch of 11A in, too. I like MW, and I think she's doing a
wonderful job. But wonderful in a similar way to Jack Millard's Louie --
I watch rolled into a ball of pain and throw things at the set.

I'm torn between A and B here. But I'll stick with A because they're doing
okay, and I'm afraid they'd horribly massacre a romance story right now. If
they can't write a good heterosexual romance after all these years of
practice, what makes us think a homosexual one would be any better?
>>11D. The character of Liza has gone *way* downhill. She was good in the old

Liza for me is just one more example of TPTB's inability to write complex
female characters. She used to be a witch, but we could see what *made* her
a witch and sort of sympathize with her badness. TPTB just don't know how to
do that anymore--although I think they may be trying with the Kinder thing.

This may be a good one to send to TPTB. Both Mark Conseulos and KHC have
said on 2 separate appearances that input from the audience _is_ taken
under consideration. KHC said the best way to get a messages across is
to get it to the producers.

couldn't stand the character!

I used to really respect Brooke, a career woman who knew what she
wanted out of life and went for it. Someone who didn't think it was
necessary to have a man around all the time!!!! lately they are
treating the character like she is 17 again and going thru all the men
she can!!! She has completly forgotten her career and I can't buy
this sudden intrest in Pierce that she is supposed to have. NOT her
type at all. They have nothing in common, I could understand if she
just wanted to sleep with him for fun (g)... but for a relationship..
I can't see it happening.

YES!!!!!! That is what I like about Erica she is never a victim, if
things go bad she comes back fighting! This laying down and suffering
is not Erica! sure she would regress for a day or so but than she
always came back with both barrells loaded. Bring back the fun Erica!
At least the one I could respect.

It looks like they are having a competition of who can have the worst

Yet they also need to get some comedy back in this soap. No one is
always serious in life. There should always be room for laughter and
fun. AMC has forgotten about that.
>9B. The character I miss most is Kendall.
I hope the rumor someone posted that she is coming back is true!
>10B. Although I'm enjoying the Michael character, it's stupid that he hasn't

They should go more into his background and the reasoning for why the
long term relationship ended. Perhaps more of us would understand than
why he dosen't have a significant other. Of course right now he is to
occupied with the school board his sisters death, and healing from his
last relationship to find someone else. Yet I would think to be
realistic about this story line after some of the other things settle
down they would bring in a boyfriend for him.

2C. When Laurel died, I threw a party. Yippidee-doodah! (I felt bad for
Michael, but not TOO bad)
3B. Brooke is decently acted but the writing is so inconsistent. I used to
like her but now I'm drifting to the AFAC side. Somebody save her!
4B. Erica just isn't as interesting these days as she used to be. For a few
years now she's been kind of a perennial victim, and that's just not Erica's
forte. Stop gunning for an Emmy and let her be a bitch again!
5A. With one or two obvious exceptions (Dixie...Michael), AMC characters
generally have fabulous hair--chic, well-conditioned, shiny, enviable,
shampoo-commerical quality hair.
6A. David Canary (Adam/Stuart) is a terrific actor, and an extremely sexy man.
7D. I have never (before just this second) thought about set design on AMC
... I can hardly venture a guess as to whether it's good or bad. I have no
opinion at all. (I know...I'm a traitor to "the choir" on this one. :) )
8A. AMC is at its best when it delves into serious social problems and
explores them through storylines related to major characters.
9B. The character I miss most is Kendall.
(I miss the actress who played Arlene the second time, but could have
cared less about the character's return had Olivia Birkelund not made her
so memorable. I might even accept someone else as Kendall, though, if
she were as good an actress as SMG)
10A. It's commendable that at long last TPTB have a front-burner gay
character, and they're doing a fabulous job with the Micheal storyline. Keep
up the good work!
(All in good time on a boyfriend, although yeah, I'd love to see him at
least on a real date with Rudy.)
11A. Liza is a real asset to AMC. She enlivens all of her scenes; I'm so
glad she's back--I always thought she was fabulous!
(On really bad days, she's been the only character worth
watching. Fortunately, these days Michael, Hayley, Laura, Kelsey and Janet
have all been good, too.)

1B. Noah and Julia have potential, but TPTB don't seem to know what to do
with them. I enjoy some of their scenes, and hope that they get involved in an
interesting plotline soon.
2B. When Laurel died, I was sad for Trevor and Michael, but didn't care much
one way or the other about Laurel herself.
5B. I hardly notice the hair on AMC anymore. Some cuts are flattering,
others aren't, but it's not really all that much better or worse than on other
shows.
6A. David Canary (Adam/Stuart) is a terrific actor, and an extremely sexy
man.
7D. I have never (before just this second) thought about set design on AMC

8A. AMC is at its best when it delves into serious social problems and

9A. The character I miss most is Arlene.
10B. Although I'm enjoying the Michael character, it's stupid that he hasn't
been involved in a romance yet, when everybody else on the show beds down

11C. I didn't much like Liza before, but she's okay now. I'm looking forward

I remembered Liz and for one moment I was thinking "who is Allison?"
but then I remembered it was her daughter.
CAZ
BUT FIRST-- (Pardon my shouting)--let me register my protest over the
phrasing of certain questions, particularly over the choices regarding
a certain niece of Phoebe's. This betrays the obvious prejudices of
the surveyor. Where is the category for "I disagree with some of the
recent choices the writers have made for Brooke, but I am in no way
sliding towards AFAC status."??? The choices you have given us
intentionally sway the voting to "prove" that no one likes Brooke.
As you have posted already, choice B is the most popular so far--and I
think if you had included this extra choice, a number of those votes
would move to the new one...
But I hate these type of things anyway. I'm not telling you *my*
opinion, I'm just choosing one of *your* opinions...
Anyway--
1B. Want to like Noah and Julia, but they need a good storyline.
2C. Party down!! Yeehah! Laurel is DEAD!!
(See above for reaction to Question 3--but for the sake of statistics):
3B: Like Brooke, but not completely happy right now.
4B. Like Erica immensely, but get the girl a meatier story, where she's
more in control of her life (and the lives of others, hehehe).
5B. Only notice the hair when RATSAfarians point it out (other than the
Dixie Disaster of '96).
6B. Love David Canary, but cannot picture myself in bed with him.
7B. AMC's sets are neither here nor there.
(OTOH, AMC's cinematography is *stunning.* The complexity of some of
their camera setups is phenomenal--and I love how they use their new
boom [as well as a certain little hand-held thing that holds a special
place in my heart]. For example, "The Cutting Edge" with Michael Delaney
was a tour-de-force. Or when Tad was talking to Liza in the foreground,
and in the background, through the window of Tad's office, we could see
Dixie having a cow and screaming at Jason about Tad's latest foulup).
8A, B and C.
(like many others, I have watched AMC at various points for any or all of
the three choices. My favorite times to watch are when half the cast is
involved in one storyline. Examples: the Palmer/Natalie/Ross/Ellen/Mark/
Katherine (or whoever Julie's mom was) thing that also included the Julie/
Charlie/Cecily teens and a host of others; the Brooke/Adam/Dixie/Tad
story which also involved a lot of others; and the recent Cutting Edge
with Michael story)
9B. Kendall. No question.
10A. Love what TPTB have done so far with Michael. "Keep up the good
work" though means, "Once this story is over, you best hook him up with
Kelsey's father pronto!"
11A. Love that Liza!! Always did!

ITA, Courtenay, I thought Allison had potential as a character. She was
around before the current onslaught of teen characters and she's get along
great with Laura and Kelsey -- full of spit and vinegar. Liz Sloane was
really a beautiful woman, in spite of her sort of blah characterization,
and it would have been fun to see her involved with ... oh, say ... Noah
instead of Taylor!! Wow, what a striking couple they'd make; better than
him and Dixie (sorry, Dix, put your fantasy on ice).

Well, not exactly a party but I did think "good riddance, now when's someone
going to take Dixie out?"

It may be that an effort is being made to make the character less "perfect." I
just wish TPTB would make it clear which way they're going with this sleeping
with The Devil (Adam) and laying down with Dogs (Pierce). Is she going to
come to her senses and see the error of her ways or is she going to drive
herself right into the path of harm and ultimate self-destruction? My
patience has just about run out.
>
> 4C. I've never understood the fascination with Erica, and have certainly

The character is somewhat of a cartoon. Erica has been too narcisstic for too
long in spite of all her trials and tribulations (like losing custody of her
daughter, being kidnapped, having a nervous breakdown). Even at the rehab
center, she had to say "I am Erica *Kane*, and I'm a drug addict." That line
is almost a cliche, and everybody knows they don't use their full names, only
their first names. She can't even pretend to be humble without reminding
everyone who she is. It's tiresome.

Don't care that much about the hairdos (unless it's something as ridiculous as
Dixie's flapper look). Now let's talk about the clothes....

A bit of both, he's a terric actor but I don't find him particularly
attractive. In fact, I think his character is so evil as to make him seem
almost repulsive. He truly is what I would envision Satan to look like.

Most of the time the sets hit the mark. Julia & Noah's apartment is a bit
strange, it doesn't seem to reflect either of their personalities. I've been
very impressed with the attention to detail in Pierce's cabin. And I think
Liza's place is fabulous; very chic, just like her.
>

Nah, because it's usually either feast or famine. They go overboard (like with
these perpetual alcoholism arcs) or they cop out (like Brooke going into
menopause...or what was that unexplained strangeness with her a few months
ago?).
>

Yeah, but the audience is growing more sophisticated (at least it is on RATSA)
and wants more realistic storylines.

A little bit goes a long way. As much as I liked Arlene (not what she did to
Hayley but that she was so *out there*) I don't think I could have stood much
more of her. Eventually I would have wanted somebody to kill her.

None of the above. Gotta say Will Corlandt (as played by Patrick Stuart).
Not to reveal any spoilers here, but it looks like TPTB are pulling the same
stunt again, that is, contriving to make a good character so universally
disliked (by the other characters) that they have to get rid of him/her. Boo,
hiss.

It's almost laughable how they're trying to seem progressive yet they refuse
to be more realistic. I think of Melrose Place, where their resident gay man
has continuous relationships but they never show him and his partners
expressing any physical affection other than hugging. In the meantime, almost
every other hetero couple on the show is trying to set records on the most
ridiculous places they can have sex. Hypocrisy, thy name is Network
Television.

I definitely think Marcy Walker has improved with age and experience. And

Liza's mouth should be registered as a lethal weapon.

watching that long. I wonder if that's a truism? You know, short viewing
time equals hating Brooke, and long viewing time equals the "inconsistent
writing" option.

I just wanted to comment that the Survey has been great, but I've
found the answers to be very hard to read! Their too close to the
question and i can't seem to separate the answer from the question.

Thanks Ashley, this was very enlightening (I actually had to do
some serious thought about it :-) )

I almost always prefer the show when Erica isn't on, which again isn't
particularly a knock against the actress, although on a scale of all the
actors on AMC, SL would get about a 2 out of 10 from me.
I do understand the initial appeal of the character. But I don't like the
campy Erica at all. I actually find her best in the quiet, emotional
scenes, such as when she was afraid of losing custody of her daughter,
scenes w/Mona and Eileen Herlie, etc..

Not a great judge of male sexiness.

Well stated.

This is the closest to my opinion, but actually AMC often botches issue
storylines. I like AMC best when it does charater stuff, which usually,
but not always, means romance.
>9 -- None of the above.
I can't say I wildly miss any of these 4. Many older characters are
greatly missed.

This is more positive than I feel, but the closest to my opinion of the
four options. And it didn't hurt that Marcy was so extraordinary in
today's (3/1) show.
This was fun, Ashley.

>one way or the other about Laurel herself.
My coworkers seemed stricken at my barely disguised glee when she was
shot down, but I did feel bad for the little tikes - Amanda, Tim (not
so little) and Lily. Michael also tugged my heartstrings, but Trev?
Nah. If he didn't care, why should I?
>3B. Brooke is decently acted but the writing is so inconsistent. I used to

I am still on the fence, but it sure is getting uncomfortable...

She makes a most incredible bi*ch.
>5A. With one or two obvious exceptions, AMC characters generally have

Exceptions - Julia's flat do-nothing do, Hayley's Jennifer Aniston

>6A. David Canary (Adam/Stuart) is a terrific actor, and an extremely sexy man.
He's old, but FINE.
>7A. AMC's set design is top-notch. The interiors are fun and fascinating,
>and really encapsulate an atmosphere appropriate to the characters living (or

I agree with this - Taylor's apartment with the African masks - AOK.
And Matt apartment - very eclectic. I like, I like. And Noah must
have been making the big bucks with the incredibly soaring ceilings
and the brick - although J and his bedroom seemed awfully SMALL. I
especially like Liza's place. Great door. They need to work on that
purple wall in Erica's house though!

I don't miss any of them. I missed alot of the Kendall storyline, but
she had promise from what I saw. That Anton though - he didn't
deserve her. I'll let you guess the true meaning of that statement.
>10B. Although I'm enjoying the Michael character, it's stupid that he hasn't

My strong vibes are that if he were to get a boyfriend, Chris Bruno
