AMC: TAN: Ratsa Takes NYC by Storm

Today, it's raining like crazy, but that didn't stop 10 intrepid people (9
ratsa'ers and 1 friend) from coming from all corners to midtown Manhattan.
Jeremy wisely commented that this had to be Rudy V.'s worst nightmare
come to life -- a bunch of ratsa snobs convening in one place.
My adventure started when I met Susan Lait, Jeremy and Kinny Bob at Penn
Station. We agreed to meet by the Departures sign in the Amtrak/NJ
Transit area. Thankfully, Susan (who came all the way from Ottawa!!) told
us that she would be wearing a purple sweater, black leggings and a dark
green jacket and has reddish brown hair. I got there first, and as soon
as I saw someone fitting Susan's description, I slowly approached her.
However, each time I got near to her, she kept turning around. Finally,
we were face-to-face and introduced ourselves. After some pleasant
chitchat, Jeremy and Ken came up to us and more introductions were made.
We were early for the lunch, so I took them upstairs for a quick stop in a
sports store and then my regular genuflection toward Madison Square Garden
(home of America's team, the NY Knicks). Next, we took the subway to a
few blocks away from TGI Friday's, which happens to be across the street
from the Fashion Cafe (gag).
Once there, we met up with the lovely Tante Joan, who brought animal noses
for us to wear. Then, we got a table, after Joan told the waiter or host
or whatever to put it in the name of "Rats," so that the others could find
us. Shortly thereafter, everyone else showed up -- Steven Zwanger, Vicky
(aka FAC Jamie, who is an infrequent poster, but after talking briefly
with her, I think she should post a lot more), Mary Bob and her lovely
friend Cathy (those Dallas women are just awesome) and The One and Only
Ashley.
To start things off, we ordered Strawberry Margaritas and chatted away,
while our waiter kept coming over to the table and asking if we were ready
to order. Eventually, we did just that. Among the many topics, we
debated acting out The Siege -- in which we would storm the ABC studios
and retrieve all L____l tapes to destroy them -- since so many of us were
right there. Ashley, Mary Bob and Cathy told us about what they've been
doing during their stays in NY. MB and Cathy actually went to see Michael
E. Knight in that play he is doing with Linda Lavin.
In spite of many of us complaining about how the rain and humidity had
wreaked havoc on our hair, Mary Bob and Susan whipped out their cameras
and took more than enough pictures for MB's web page and for the yearbook.
In fact, a waiter (not ours, but another one) heard us talking, and since
he is both an AMC fan and has internet access, he said that he will soon
be joining us on ratsa. (BTW, he's a BABE!!!!) He also took plenty of
group pictures of us with both cameras
Toward the end of the lunch, I took out my cell phone so that we could
re-enact some of The Best of AMC. I opened my flip phone and then smacked
it shut against my head, and everyone knew that I was Trevor. Then, Mary
Bob opened it and started shouting "Talk to me!" I must say that she did
one hell of an impression of Hayley.
I have to say that I truly enjoyed meeting each and every person there,
and because of the set-up (one loooong table), I wish I had the chance to
chat more with some people who were at the other end.
Now, everyone else who was there should add their impressions, thoughts,
etc.

Well, a group of us (Mary Bob, Cathy, Susan, Steven, Kinny Bob and
myself) decided to go on the NBC studio tour. This was not being
given so we took the Radio City Music Hall tour instead. We went on
what seemed like a wild goose chase through a downpour to get our
tickets which were half price thanks to Steven and his handy dandy AAA
card.
The tour was informative and fun (you would not believe the odd names
the men who have ran Radio City have had) and we got to have our
picture taken with a rockette. Steven disappeared before I had a
chance to to say bye to him. It was nice meeting you Steven. Thanks
for the discount!
As for the Ratsa meeting, it was great!! Everyone was really
friendly, especially to a lil ole lurker like me! Boy can Ashley
sing! He was kind enough to entertain us with a medley of show tunes.
I hope to see everyone again soon.

Hello, Roanna. I'm the person who usually "put together" the
Sacramento area RATSA meetings. We didn't seem to have any
meetings over the summer because of vacations, etc. I would
like to get another meeting scheduled, but I just found out
tonight that Linda Johnson, one of our beloved members, is
going to HAWAII, so we should wait until her return in mid-
November.
We also haven't heard from Tahnda Bailey in quite some time.
Tahnda actually lives and works in Southern California, but
comes to Sacramento on business on a somewhat regular basis.
The Sacramento area RATSA meetings got started because she
contacted me when she was going to be in town, saying she'd
like to get together for lunch, and then we opened up the
invite to anyone/everyone in the area.
We have held all meetings at the Food Court at the Downtown
Plaza, usually starting at 11:45 a.m., and ending around
1:30 p.m., with folks filtering away as they have to get
back to work. Are you available to meet like this? If so,
write to me, and let me know.
As for the Bay Area, there WAS a meeting on March 9, 1996.
Many more people had RSVP'd that they be there than actually
showed up.... but there was still a good crowd! It was held
in Fremont. Yes, it's time for another Bay Area meeting,
perhaps in the East Bay....

great time. I got to talk a fair bit with everyone (though not nearly as
much as I would have liked), and boy do I have pictures! (have to take
them in for developing tonight) The drive down was gorgeous, too,
although the weather on Saturday and Sunday was abysmal. I really felt
bad for those who didn't bring umbrellas (are you dry yet, Ken?) Anyway,
this meeting was definitely worth the drive down!

You know how sometimes things you're really really looking forward to
can fail to live up to your expectations?
Well, the Ratsa lunch date was one of those few things that actually
*exceeded* my expectations!
First of all, Leslie, you did a stupendous job of getting the whole
thing organized. And getting ten people together (from 3 different
states and 2 different countries) at the same time at the same place
can't possibly be an easy chore!
Y'all, Leslie is *such* a nice person! She and I have had several
telephone conversations in preparation for the big get-together and
have ended up talking for a loooooong time every time discussing every
little thing that's going on in our lives just like we'd known each
other forever! Grade A, this one!
And Tante Joan! Oh my gosh, although I had an already very flattering
image of Tante in my mind, she was even lovlier and more wonderful
than I had imagined! Every bit as quick-witted, articulate and
gracious in person as she is on Ratsa, but with even more charm and a
truly warm spirit which could never translate to computer monitor!
Susan Lait drove all the way from Canada! She was getting some
vacation time in (had been to Pennsylvania (?) I believe) and was even
going to camp out one night on her way back to Ottawa! Susan, I'm glad
to see you have posted since then, as I was a-feared you might have
washed away! Susan is all smiles and a real cutie! Think of the nicest
person you know, the one who is always making everyone feel
comfortable and making things enjoyable for everyone, and that's
Susan!
And I was so glad to get to meet Vickie! Although I didn't recognize
her last name at the time, I certainly knew who FAC Jamie was. (Just
goes to show you how important a role those FACs play here on Ratsa!)
Vickie is a gorgeous brunette and a little on the quiet side (okay,
maybe it was because I was hogging the conversation, that's a bad
habit I have) and Vickie, I don't know if you noticed it, but that
really tall, good-looking, blond-ish guy on the Radio City Music Hall
tour with the pissed-off looking wife was checking you out BIG time!
Now for the guys. To my immediate left was Steve Zwanger! It was
*such* a nice surprise for me to find out he was there for two
reasons:
1. He is one of my Friday Updaters and we're e-mail buddies, and
2. He is a BL&P! The *only* one there besides me!
I have to pause here and give the BABEs credit where credit is due,
for knowing the utter overpowering presence they had at the hoo-hah
over us BL&Ps they agreed to keep Brooke out of conversation all
together! We would certainly have been buried there without additional
help from the BL&P reserves. Also, all were kind enough to keep my end
of the table a Spoiler-Free Zone! And this was big, since several of
us hadn't seen AMC in several days, and major stuff had been going on.
But back to Steve! He was a real hero at Radio City Music Hall where
is AAA membership card (which he happened to have on him) saved us all
50% on our tour tickets! (which at $14 each, I happen to think are a
bit pricey.) Steve is one of those really cute, adorable guys who are
a combination of the studly dude who is a little on the shy, quiet
side!
Now I know *everybody* wants to know about the famous Ratsa Chief of
Security, His Highness Jeremy! He is just as smart and darling in
person as he is on Ratsa! I would dearly love to see one of our Ratsa
women snag this one (which is bound to happen sooner or later, what
with all this potential match-making involving Jeremy going on) and
the sooner the better, ladies, before this one gets away!
And Kinny Bob made it! All the way from Pennsylvania and I was *so*
glad he did! I've eagerly read everything Ken has written since I
arrived on the Ratsa scene almost a year and a half ago, and I
couldn't wait to meet the guy in person. He is as *precious* as he can
be and reminds me a lot of my ***EX***-boyfriend Ron in the looks
department, so that ought to tell you that I think pretty highly of
this one!
And last but CERTAINLY not least is Mr. Ashley Lambert-Maberly! Now,
can you just imagine how exciting this was! He was the last to arrive
and I was on pins and needles 'till he got there. And let me tell you,
that yearbook picture doesn't do him justice. That wavy black hair,
those dark eyes-- whew! And don't even get me *started* on Rheal, who
he happened to have a picture of. But anyway, apparently NYC had been
pretty hard on our Mr. Lambert-Maberly thus far, as he had apparently
been the roving party for both nights he had been in town and had only
had 3 hours of sleep from Thursday morning to when we got together on
Saturday! It sounds like the party would start on Ashley's arrival and
cease on his exit as he went from place to place each night! I do hope
he's had some sleep by now, but I'm not counting on it. I'm sure the
city will never be the same.
So that's everyone, and I have some great pictures which I'll post on
my web page as soon as I get them out of developing. Cathy, who I was
travelling with and does not partake of Ratsa and didn't know a *whit*
about who any of these folks are kept saying: "My gosh, those people
were all SO NICE!" She said it *over* and *over* again!

Guiding Light Fan Fair (*tons* of pictures of that, if anyone
interested)
Dinner and cabaret show at the Rainbow Room with four guys: (a bearded
actor from Guiding Light, a short-ish actor from As the World Turns, a
really handsome man named Larry Dees, and the blonde headed guy from
Phantom of the Opera)
and that's all!
Thanks again to everyone who braved the weather and came from many
miles to have lunch. We just had to walk three short blocks from our
hotel, so I really appreciate all the effort! It was FUN!!!!

I thought it was great! It was in a small-ish little off-Broadway
theater and our seats were great.
The play (for those who haven't seen it) was written by Lillian
Helmond's younger lover and is the story of their relationship,
particularly from a sexual aspect. (And I just wonder if Lillian isn't
turning over in her grave at some of the things he reveals, I will
just say two words: three-way.)
Michael E. Knight has a real presence (IMO) in person, as well as on
the tube, as was noted by Cathy, who doesn't even watch AMC, but
remembers Tad from the Jenny and Greg Glory Days when the whole world
watched.
Especially delightful was seeing him in his little shorty shorts
boxers and nothing else!
I'm not much of a theater critic, but I thought Linda Lavin (who I
just hated in Alice) was a bit heavy-handed with the cynicism and
droll, but hey, I enjoyed it nonetheless.
And there were several *great* one-liners, several of which I planned
to use on Mr. Can't Commit upon my arrival back home, but he would
never step into the traps I baited, so I just had to store them away
for future use.
To sum it up, it was really good, and you should see it if you have
the chance!

I think it's a great showcase for MEK. Linda Lavin was great (I
didn't have the same problem you did with LL's interpretation because
I have seen and heard Lillian Hellman many times. Take my word for
it, LL gets all her mannerisms down pat.)
The show needs a better makeup artist for MEK, I think. He doesn't
age as believably as he could, but that is not his fault; it's
cosmetic, literally. It was great to see see him in another role, and
feel that charm just roll across the footlights. I had read that when
he auditioned, Ms. Lavin came up to him and said, "You're good! Where
did you come from," impl that she knew nothing about his long run on
AMC. Whether it's a true story or not, her assessment is correct. Go
see it if you can.

Tante, ITA. Everyone was wonderful! Especially all you RATSA BABES
(and i don't mean Brooke-haters). I admit, I now have the biggest crush
on Mary Bob-Babe. If only I were a few years older...
Lunch was so much fun. The only disappointment was that I didn't get to
speak to everybody--I wished we'd had more time! But thanks to Leslie
for putting together a great event.
You've heard all about the lunch from the others, so I'll talk about the
post-lunch activities:
Six of us (Vicky, Steven, Susan, Mary Bob, Cathy and I) went to the NBC
studio to get a tour, but it was closed. So we took a tour of
Radio City Music Hall instead, which was pretty fun (despite the fact that
we got soaked to the bone running from building to building trying to get
tickets). Vicky and I couldn't stop laughing at the funny names of the
men who had headed up the Music Hall--first "Roxy Rothefel" followed by
"Leon Leonodoff".
And how about this for a funny coincidence: it turns out that
my mom and sister were at River Dance (the show that was playing at RCMH
while we were on the tour). I had no idea until I spoke to my mom
afterwards. And my mom is an AMC fan too--we could've met!
After the tour, we parted ways. It was still pouring rain, and Susan and
I (both headed to Penn Station) headed down to the subway. And this was
*just* the beginning of our wet-n-wild subterranean adventure...
..thanks to the rain, the subways were breaking down left and right. We
got on one train which was supposed to take us to Lexington Avenue, where
we could change trains and zip right into Penn Station. but when we got
to the Lexington Avenue Station, we realized that there were *two*
Lexington Avenue stations and we were in the wrong one! We had gotten on
the right train (the "F" I think) but this particular F was being used to
replace another train which wasn't running. How were we to know??
Susan and I stood around staring at the subway map trying to figure out
what to do next. A kind stranger recommended we go south and then take
the shuttle to Times Square, where we could then change to the 1-9 to
Penn Station. I was familiar with this route, so we tried it out. The
trains were PACKED and the stations flooded with murky water, but we made
it to Times Square. And we waited. and waited for the next train.
Finally, they announced that it had broken down due to the rain.
GREAT! At that, Susan and I gave up on the subway and walked the 8 or so
blocks south to Penn Station (in the pouring rain). And we finally made
it and said our goodbyes on the train.
Such an adventure! All I can say is...thank goodness for waterproof
jackets and shoes. (Did I mention that I negelected to bring an umbrella
with me?). Too bad my pants weren't waterproof.
I had a great time, and I think everyone did. Can't wait to do it again.

It was a true dud... If not for a girl who used to sing with me in the
college choir asking me to sit with her and her husband, I would *really*

(There were only about 30 classmates there, and they were the fraternity/
sorority group -- I was an independent. I was definitely the oldest
looking one there; but I took solace in figuring the other 520 people who
