Wasn't Jenny the nurse?
The original Karen was a nurse, wasn't she? She may not have still been
nursing when Judith Light took over the role.

Maybe she was when Kathryn Breech was in the role. You may be right.
At least, I think that's it. I love the Big Book.

Thanks, I thought it was an error.

I guess they thought it looked better than "Prostitute Karen Wolek," huh?
But yes, Jenny was the nurse and Karen was . . . pursuing other career endeavors.

Yep. Either they had the Karen Woleks mixed up, or they had Karen II mixed
up w/ her sister Jenny who was a nurse, and also (starting out) a nun.
When I started watching in summer 1969, Larry had just been trapped into an
unwanted marriage w/ Karen Martin. She trapped him by making him think the
love of his life, Merry Lord, had run off w/ another guy. He was vulnerable
to trying to drown his sorrows w/ the most obliging nurse Karen, who then
had her way w/ Larry. As so often happens on soaps, the one time resulted in
pregnancy. Karen threatened to have an illegal abortion if Larry didn't
marry her. By this time, he discovered the story about Merry was false. She
had not been untrue to him. But, he accepted his responsibility and "did the
right thing". I think there was some kind of accident and Karen began
bleeding. She was admitted to the hospital to be kept lying flat on her
back, in order to try to save the baby. I remember the first scene I ever
saw of Larry was him at Karen's bedside. She was begging him to tell her he
loved her. Larry, looking sorrowful, said, "Love the woman who threatened to
destroy my baby if I didn't marry her?"
Thankfully, the miscarriage happened and Larry was able to obtain an
annullment, being the marriage was never consumated AFTER vows were taken.
But by that time, sadly, Merry was hooked up w/ another man---a mysterious
stranger who came to town, not remembering anything about his past. Merry
called him Tom Edwards. And so it went.

I remember when Kathryn Breech's Karen Wolek and OriginalJenny (forgot
the actress' name) first came to town. Jenny was the nurse, not Karen.
I don't remember what Karen's occupation was, or if she even had one,
just that she was kind of a brat.
The other posters are right, the Emmys PTB got Karen Wolek mixed up
with either Karen Martin or Jenny Wolek.

The first Karen Wolek (Kathryn Breech) got a job serving food and drinks at
Tony Lord's bar and grill. That's the only work I remember her doing before
marrying Larry, at which time she quit working and tried to get into the
role of homemaker and stepmother---which didn't suit her.
There was foreshadowing of her eventual life of prostitution early on, when
she worked at the bar and grill. She delighted in a $100 tip she got from a
male patron w/ whom she flirted when he showed an obvious attraction (she
was a major babe!). After a quarrel w/ Larry, she went home one night w/
another customer from the bar. She regretted it seriously the next day, when
Larry came by to patch things up. But you could see the seeds taking root
for what was to come.

My theory also.
