Hi old friends and new strangers!

Everything I've read says that the satellite provider, Direct TV, will
carry the new SoapNet channel that is scheduled to debut on January 27th
(thats Monday!). While I've pretty much given up on the CURRENT crop of ABC
soaps, I really really want to see Ryan's Hope again from the first episode.

So.... does ANYONE know what DirectTV channel the network will be on? I
can't find anything on the DirectTV site or my on-screen program guide and
the official SoapNet page has nothing at all on it.

HELP!

I can help. DirecTV is definitely going to air the new SoapNet channel, but
they aren't quite ready to start it up when the SoapNet channel starts. The
latest announcement, which I read last week, said that it would start up
"before summer". They are rearranging some things, and they're thinking of
making it part of a new package, tentatively called, "Family Choice".

Evidently, it takes awhile to add a new channel anywhere, whether it's a cable
system or a satellite system. I read on TV Guide Online today that SoapNet is
starting out with a million viewers. I'm waiting for one of them to speak up
and say, "It's on here" since no one seems to have had much luck when phoning
their cable systems.

When the very first announcement came out that there would be a SoapNet, I
called my cable company (Cox), and wrote them a snail mail, and sent the press
release. However, they chose to ignore my advice. It's not scheduled to air on
my version of Cox anytime in the future, and in fact we're getting nothing new
until Sept.

So, I bought DirecTV, thinking I would get SoapNet on Jan. 24 when it aired.
But, now I have to wait. Oh, well, I've waited this long, and I will just have
to wait a little longer. At least, we know that it will definitely be on
DirecTV. Some subscribers say it will appear between April and June.

Here's the link to keep track of the latest news for DirecTV. It's updated
daily, and the SoapNet news was on last week. They keep as much of the current
news there as possible, so if you scroll down, you'll find it.

http://www.directmagazine.com/dishnews.cfm

I saw a time schedule for SoapNet in the last Soap Opera Update. It had the
ABC soaps airing starting at 7:30 am, 7:30 pm, and 11:30 pm each day, following
their normal schedule. While I know that Ryan's Hope will be on there, the
magazine didn't give the time it's on. And they mentioned that they were still
looking for 3 episodes of Ryan's Hope. I don't know if it starts right away or
not, but apparently all the other soaps do.

I'm only wanting two things from SoapNet, and that's a backup for PC, in case
there's breaking news. (I'm keeping cable, because I don't get local networks
on DirecTV, plus the DirecTV's Weather Channel can't give out local
predictions.) Plus, I want to see the soap news.

And welcome to the wonderful world of satellite ownership! I figured
DirectTV would make a big announcement when they added the channel (then
again, it isn't a sports or movie channel so...). I guess waiting a few
months is worth it. I hope they get it on the schedule before summer.

When Ryan's Hope started I was there with the first episode so if I miss a
little of it this time around I can handle it. Just so long as I can see my
wonderful Bucky Carter (Justin Deas) and Barry Ryan (Richard Backus).

Thanks for this link. I had been going to the directtv homepage which is
updated about twice a year!

My mother is interested in a watching OLTL in the evening. That's her
number one soap at the moment. She might also tune into some of the
nighttime soaps. I have a feeling Dynasty is going to look VERY dated and
rather frightening! THe soap news should be interesting too but I'm just in
it for Ryan's Hope. I hope it's as good as I remember it was!

I've got a feeling that part of DirectTV's problem is the Primestar by
DirectTV crew to which I belong. We're being updated slowly but surely.
We're still PrimeStar which means we won't get any new programming until
we get our new dish.

I just spoke to a customer service rep for DishNetwork...at this time it's not
scheduled for their line-up but the man said that he felt sure they would end
up carrying it....which angers me because I would like to get it from it's
start-up.....I really want to see the old episodes of "Ryan's Hope".....there
was an article in one of the soap magazines I picked up today asking for people
to send in tapes of 28 old episodes which are missing from the archives of the
show...they even gave plot summaries.....it might help if you e-mail
DisNetwork to express interest in the channel.....the service guy said he was
sure his mother would be calling him this weekend to ask about it!.....

You're in luck. I think. According to SoapNet Ryan's Hope will air
THREE times a day. Two of the airings will the show from the start of
the show. The other airing will supposedly start with later episodes.
That means that the third time slot will get back around to the
original episodes after so many months. So that people joining the
party late won't have to wait as long for the original episodes to come
back around again.

I'm sure it will air by June 1, and hopefully sooner. I hope they send me a
"message" on my receiver that SoapNet's about to air!

I think OLTL will come on at 9 pm, since PC airs at 7:30 pm, and it goes in
ABC's order.

However, Cox is in my area too, and they're going digital in March,
which means more channels--and they said it was a definite possibility
that SN would be included. Here's hoping (but I'm not holding my
breath).

That sounds like good news. Cox is going digital here also, but it takes them
time. The weird thing is that they're doing it first in a community that's
more a rural area and a smaller city than I live in. They've completed a lot
of work in that area -- not an hour's drive away from where I live. But here,
they say that they expect the work will be completed in 18-24 months. They
said we might get some new channels in September, but SoapNet wasn't among
them. They wrote in our last bill that we'd get a ballot in the mail the
middle of this month to vote on what channels we want in that 18-24 months
period. The ballot has yet to arrive, so I don't know if it's multiple choice
or fill in the blank. But I do know that the middle of the month has passed.

In that same little town where they're going digital first, they got in an
argument with two FOX stations. And they took the one FOX station we had off
the air for a month as part of their protest. Luckily, it was one day after
Nicholas Pryor appeared on "Party of Five", or I probably would have given them
an argument over that.

I wouldn't doubt that down the line they will have SoapNet. But the year 2002?
That was too long for me to wait. So, that's why I ended up with DirecTV.
(Though I still have cable too.)

Here's hoping it works out in your area with Cox!

I called Cox on Saturday. They told me there was no room for any new
channels and wouldn't be until they went digital (current estimate--late
2001). I suggested they get rid of one of their zillions of home
shopping channels. They chuckled appreciatively.

Just remember: For every "Johnny mortgages the bar to save Maeve's
parents' farm" is a "Delia is kidnapped by a gorilla." Well, maybe the
good does outweigh the bad, but . . . every show has its clunkers.

Excellent suggestion! I think they're working on going digital in phases, or
something. The town that's about 50 miles south of us is a smaller city, but
that's where they started work. They'll get new channels long before we do.

Supposedly, there was a ballot I should have received in mid-Jan. to vote for
what I want on Cox. Ha! It must have been delayed. Sending out ballots is
pretty high tech stuff!

I just called Time-Warner (our cable provider) and they acted like I was
nuts. They did say since they hadn't heard of it (do I believe THAT?)
they didn't know but maybe by summer. Time to start bombarding them with

This is crazy!! Why would they open up the webpage, give a schedule, and not
tell anyone what channel its on or where it is available. It would seem that at
least SOMEONE would have it on this group somewhere. Has anyone heard when it
will hit Directv? I have it, and still see nothing. Is there an email address to
DTV we can ask from?

I really want to see Falcon Crest etc.

According to all that I've been able to find, SoapNet will be aired on DirecTV
when they add a new package sometime during the second quarter of this year.
Tentatively, it's being called "Family Choice".

I think what it might all come down to is that perhaps they don't have as many
commitments now as they'd like. It is probably coming down to the wire in some
places. But in a short time, we should know, as at 7:00 pm tonight -- in about
10 minutes from the time I write this -- SoapNet airs. They have a page ad in
the NY paper, and evidently articles in the Hollywood Reporter and Variety.
But so far no cable system has come out with the news that they're carrying the
channel. Maybe those of us on DirecTV will be among the first to see it, after
all. But it won't be tonight, unfortunately.

I called DirecTV today and they "took my request" to carry SOAPNET. The girl I
spoke to had no idea if or when DTV would carry this channel. She said that
they have gotten calls about it, and that they just keep taking the requests.
So I guess if you have DirecTV, you should at least call them and let them know
you want it. Other than that...?!?!

DirecTV signed a deal w/ABC to carry SoapNet as part of their agreement
to carry the local ABC owned stations(DirecTV now carries local
ABC,NBC,CBS & FOX stations from many major cities). DirecTV will be
carrying SN,but not until late spring or early summer.Possibly between
April & June.
I found this information at the www.dbsdish.com discussion boards. A
lot of the operators @ DirecTV usually don't know a lot about upcoming
new channels,so dbsdish is a good source for the latest DTV & Dish
Network news.

My speculation is that SoapNet was beamed to Mars, and that's why those faint
radio signals came through that they thought might possibly have come from the
Mars probe. The Martians loved Port Charles, but they had some questions about
what's happened in the past. :-)
