**warning** this is a shameless political endorsement for a friend of
mine who is running in the state-wide Republican primary on March
12th, so if you are not interested, stop reading now. Go to the next
message! You have been warned!

(tiny protection space)
Is anyone still there? Hopefully, *someone* is still paying attention.
Well, I am *not* a political person by nature. I can name Erica's
husbands quicker than I could even begin to tell you who is in
Clinton's cabinet. (Jeff Martin, Phil Brent, Tom Cudahy, Adam
Chandler, Travis Montomery, and Dimitri Marrick, by the way). I am not
even a lawyer (nor do I play one on TV) - I am a techie!
But, a close friend of mine, Susan Baetz Brown, is running for the
State of Texas, Court of Criminal Appeals, Position One. Yeah, right,
you say, *how* close?? Well, Susan and I met in college, where we, of
course, planned our class schedule around the watching of our soaps. I
was maid of honor in (both of) her weddings, and am the godmother to
one of her kids. So, I would say, pretty close.
What is the Court of Criminal Appeals (CoCA), you may ask (I had to!).
It hears death penalty cases and appeals of other criminal matters and
is the highest court in criminal matters in Texas. There are nine
judges on the court, each elected statewide. Together, the judges
decide whether a convicted defendant received a fair trial. There are
three positions on this court up for election this year.
Several of the CoCA Republican candidates that I have heard speak at
forums have criticized this Texas court for taking too long to decide
on cases. Many have also stated that our courts do not do enough to
protect victim's rights in criminal cases. This seems to be a concern
with most of the (Republican) candidates - I can't speak for the
Democrats because I haven't heard any of them yet.
So, why am I asking you to consider voting for Susan?
The Facts (Susan's Qualifications): Susan is a Chief Prosecutor in the
Harris County (Houston) District Attorney's Office. She has been
working for the DA's office for over 12 years, ever since she finished
law school. She is an experienced trial lawyer, presenting hundreds of
cases to juries dealing with capital murder, aggravated robbery and
sexual assault. She has placed several criminals on death row. The
bottom line: Susan has spent years "down in the trenches" fighting to
put criminals behind bars on a daily basis. She is the *only*
candidate in her race with this kind of prosecuting experience. Susan
shares your concern for the victims of crime and believes in the need
for tough law enforcement that assures fairly convicted criminals
serve their sentences.
I hope there aren't too many people who are upset that I have posted
this message, but, there are *seven* people in Susan's primary race,
and I thought this might be a good way to get her name out to a few of
my ratsa buddies across the state (lucky you! My other friends got to
hear about this in my Christmas letter!). I have found that most of us
have opinions on the *big* races, like the Presidential race, but a
lot of us don't know details on the other races, especially judges.
So, even if you don't vote for Susan, I figure you will now be a more
informed voter, so I am doing my civic duty. So, please vote in the
primaries on March 12th, and if you are voting Republican, please
consider Susan Baetz Brown.
I won't do any mud-slinging here, but if you want to know more about
the other candidates in Susan's race (or in Positions Two and Three),
email me and I will be happy to tell you more....
