This was about 18 or 19 years ago. I think that does count as way
before you got hooked on GH. <g>
Laura was a teenaged girl in love with Scotty Baldwin. Laura and Scotty
were *THE* couple, at the time, suffering from the machinations of evil
nurse Bobbie Spencer (who has since grown up seriously). Luke and Laura
were friends, but he was in love with her.
I can't remember if he had asked her to meet him at the disco, or if
they both just happened to be alone there by coincidence, but a hug
turned itself into either (depending on which writer or viewer you ask)
consensual sex or rape.
When L&L started to become a serious couple, there was a ***MAJOR***
outcry from the fans. How could the writers do this? Well, TPTB stuck
with it, and they became the most popular couple on the show, possibly
ever.
The rationale I read a few months after the incident was from one of
TPTB (possilby Producer Gloria Monty, but please don't swear me to it).
This person said that the story was about a young girl (Laura) who was
convinced that her infatuation with Scotty was real love, but not yet
old enough to know her sexuality or her feelings, acting on her
attraction to another man. To this PTB, it was consensual sex, but she
was afraid of the ramifications of her actions, so she cried rape.
Again, it depends on which writer or viewer you ask. Most will be
vehement that it was one or the other.

I remember seeing it and she did scream "No Luke" doesn't sound consentual to
me
If you ask Genie Francis (Laura) or Anthony Geary (Luke), as several
interviewers have, they'll say it was rape and that the writers
"backpedaled like crazy."
For me, it'll always be an example of backstage concerns guiding the
writing, but also one of the most fascinating character histories in
soap history. You can't have an understanding of Luke and Laura now
without taking into consideration what happened back then, IMO.

I was trying to put it as neutrally as possible, but personally I agree
with you. At the time (or within the next couple of weeks), the joke
was that she went from "Don't! Stop!" to "Don't stop!"
Unfortunately, the whole thing turned into a choice: Was he a monster,
or was she a twit? The situation made me uneasy at first, but I
eventually gave up and enjoyed the pairing. No point going on
otherwise, if TPTB were insistant.
Luke raped Laura in October of 1979. It's very difficult to explain all
the convoluted circumstances in 500 words or less (but I'll give it a
try!).
Laura was 17 and married to Scott Baldwin (an over worked law student).
She wanted more freedom and excitement than her marriage to Scotty
seemed to allow so (against her husbands wishes) she took a job at the
"Campus Disco" which was run by Luke (as a front for Frank Smith's
mob). Laura was innocently drawn to Luke's glamourous lifestyle and she
considered him a friend. Luke was beginning to fall hopelessly in love
with Laura (with strong emphasis on the word 'hopeless'). Luke and Roy
DeLuca (Bobbie's boyfriend), were supposed to kill off a politician for
the mob. Luke didn't want to do it, but he was already in too deep. He
felt that whatever he did he would wind up dead in a week. It was this
desparation that led him to rape Laura (in effect destroying the only
good thing in his life -- her friendship and compassion for him).
In the end it was Roy DeLuca who ended up dead and Luke decided to work
to expose Frank Smith's organization. As to Laura... she was devastated
but she refused to tell Scott the identity of the man who raped her.
She hated what Luke had done to her and she did not forgive him, but she
still felt the need to protect him. She ended up continuing to work at
the Disco because Luke told her Frank Smith would kill him if she left
(Smith suspected Laura had overheard his conversation one night). While
trying to get evidence against Smith, Luke ended up engaged to Smith's
daughter, Jennifer. On the day of their wedding (on a yacht), Scotty
discovered that Luke had raped Laura. After fighting with Laura, Scott
headed off to kill Luke at the wedding. Scott punched Luke and knocked
him in the water, allowing Luke to 'escape'. A water logged Luke
surfaced right next to Laura (who had followed Scotty). Luke begged
Laura to help him escape and search for evidence to decode Smith's
"little black book" of mob names. Laura agreed... and thus began the
first (and best) "summer on the run".
I have a transcript of the rape scene (with images) pasted at:

And there is also an essay about rape fantasy and romantic fiction at:

Hope this helps....

The song was "Rise," and I think it was either by Mangione or Herb
Alpert (something tells me it was Alpert). I also remember that scene
when I hear that song.

>Excellent description! The only thing I have to add is that the scene had a
>Chuck Mangione song on as background music. (I think it was Mangione.....).

Herb Alpert's "Rise," wasn't it?
It was "Rise". .. I always wondered why they picked that instrumental.
Herb Alpert's "Rise."

Well I tell you I think that the pickings would be pretty slim in the
park in the middle of winter for the random rapist. Those kind of
sleazoids are like the lions at the watering hole... they are going to
go where the prey is. I think that it has to be someone that Liz
knows... and I have an idea who but I'm not telling.
If it is a random no name then it is probably someone that scoped her
out at the nice warm movie theatre and followed her when she walked away
from the theatre.
And haven't these writer's ever heard of hypothermia? I read about a
lady that died of exposure overnight in above freezing weather. Let
alone Liz who was barefoot wearing a thin dress and carrying her coat.
Along with signs of rape, Bobbie should have been checking her temp!

I think it was the cab driver. At the time that she was leaving for the
dance I was wondering, why wouldn't Gramm drive her and drop her off.
Seemed kinda wierd to me.

Teresa...why would she call another cab to drive her back to Audrey's house
if it was the cab driver? And I think she would know if it was the cab
driver, because you do see enough of a person driving a cab to recognize
their eyes, like when you pay him/her. I would be too scared of cabs after
that!

I hope we dont know the rapist, I think it should be a random rape. There
is nobody in particular I would think would do this..and if it is Tony I
will go NUTS!

Not really. Some teenage girls (and guys) would rather not
have their parent (or grandparent) drop them off at a school dance.
Audrey may have taken this into account.

What I meant was that the cab driver dropped her off, all dressed up,
at the movies. Maybe he was off work and happened back by and followed
her. I know it sounds far fetched, but it takes a sick person to rape
someone imo. It may have been completely randon or a stalking/rape.
Also, when she was in the cab she was really upset about Lucky and
was probably trying to decide what to do so she probably only glanced
at the driver. Then at the time of the rape he came from behind with
a ski mask on and it was at least 2 hours after she rode in the cab
so there would be no reson for me to think that she would have made
the connection.l
