I just saw a commercial for Harriet the Spy, a new movie starring Rosie
O'Donnell and the actress who used to play Lily Benton/Banning Montgomery
(Laurel's autisitc daughter). Her name is (something) Trachtenberg. I
forgot, maybe Michelle? Anyway, the announcer says the young actress's
name in the promo so she must have a starring role.

Yeek! They're making Harriet the Spy into a movie? I remember reading
that when I was a kid (and I'm no kid)!

Yes, the child would be a starring role. Harriet is about ten years old.
It's about a rich girl with a *dreadful* home life (the
housekeeper/nanny is her only real adult friend) who finds ways to find
out what other people do, by breaking and entering into their homes.
She keeps long-running notes on the lives of most people in town. My
favorite routine in the book was when she would sneak into one house's
living room through a dumbwaiter.

The book isn't so much, "does this girl suddenly find out that something
big is happening?" (no, she doesn't) as "this kid needs help!" I
remember one of her best friends is a girl who loves chemistry and
mentions to Harriet in conversation that she's invented some new poisons
that can't be traced.

I don't care if the movie is designed for 10-year-old girls. I want to
see it!!!!!

Ahem. ::straightening tie::

I don't know "The Long Secret." What's it about?

Hey, Harriet the Spy was -- is -- on my all-time favorite list of great
books. I must have read it about 50 times when I was a kid. I will
definitely see the movie.
