So I've been cheering THE CITY since it's premiere, convinced that the high-concept production will
eventually produce top-notch storylines. Well, it's getting there with the racial tension Jared Chase is stirring
up which involves everybody on the show. Recent developments in Jocelyn's and Azure's characters are
incredible enough to make me forgive the pointlessness of Danny's and Bernardo's cafe in the modeling
agency and Richard and Zoey's impending romance (Don't get me wrong, I like these two characters. They
look cute together. However, personality-wise, they would make an annoying pair. I think Zoey should
pursue either Buck or Frank, and Richard should go for that film writer Frank is working with - I forgot her
name but not her face...brunette, smart, etc.).

Anyway, what I cannot forgive is the addition of this Lorraine character! She just doesn't seem to fit into the
scheme of things. And her voice and body-language are completely annoying! Absolutely not in league with
Richard and Zoey's brand of annoyance which I am fond of. Lorraine, after watching her in two episodes
so far, makes me want to knock over the satellite dish. She is obviously eyeing Jacob. Couldn't TPTB have
brought in a new character? SoHo is a great place with many fascinating people. Surely James H. Brown
(head writer) could have created a more interesting character to make up a love triangle involving Jacob
and Angie. In the first place, I don't think anything or anyone can come between these two. It would be a
big mistake to break up the chemistry between the actors. But since happy couples equal absence of
storylines, a love triangle involving Jacob and Angie isn't troubling.

However, Lorraine Hawkins?! Even RuPaul would have been far more interesting an addition. It's not the
actress, Maggie Rush, but the character of Lorraine overall. It's like she's forcing herself where she's not
wanted.

And yes, if she stays longer than one month, I might stop watching!

I have to agree. In a recent article in an education publication (I don't
remember which one because I was doing research and they have all melded
together, but I'll gladly go back and locate it if anyone's interested) the
author said the 2 topics causing the most controversy in America today are
multicultural problems, and the gay/lesbian topic (please don't take this as a
flame, I just didn't know what other word to use than topic) ANYWAY, the City
seems to be dropping the UMOJA theme if James is leaving, and I thought it had
real potential. Lorraine?? I thought this was hashed out in Corinth.

The multicultural angle is a very relevant topic especially in THE CITY as more and more metropolitan areas
in the U.S. face racial tensions. The storyline brewing on the show was especially good because we were
seeing racial tensions within a race i.e. James' opinion clashing with Angie's as to interracial adoption. A lot
of soaps have covered interracial marriage but THE CITY was putting a spin on it.

It was also an issue that is rooted in the storyline rather than arbitrarily used i.e. issue of the month. As we
can see many storylines were rooted in this issue...Jared's bid for the building, Jocelyn's past, etc. and not
confined to Frankie's relationships with his mother and James. I like how the multicultural issue and racial
tension was interlinked logically with the other storyline. Great for 30 minute drama to have the cohesion
usually characteristic in primetime dramas with self-contained plotlines.

Anyway, I hope TPTB don't chicken out of the transexual storyline. This might just set apart THE CITY
which TPTB were hoping from Day One.

Hey, do you think TPTB were pinning their hopes that Lorraine will save the show seeing as how she has a
lot of fans out there and that she can naturally win over many more??? <sarcastically>

Oh, yeah, and maybe Rip Taylor is available to play Buck's long-lost father.

Better casting decision. Rip Taylor is great on Garry Shandling's HBO show.

Uh, Gary, I think it's Rip Torn on Garry Shandling's show, isn't it? The guy
I was thinking of used to carry a bag of confetti around and throw it on
everybody. He dressed in wild paisley bell-bottom styles and worn an
obviously fake toupee.

And where the heck is Ava? I'll pay for the plane ticket if she'll only
come back!!!
