Your roving reporter in the field reporting in...

On Saturday, I went to see "Into the Woods" at the Interact Theatre in
North Hollywood, California. The play is directed by John Rubinstein
and stars, among others, Matthew Ashford (Dr. Tom Hardy). Matt plays
both the Wolf and Cinderella's Prince (for those familiar with the
Sondheim musical).

Matt does a fine job in both roles. He makes a properly seductive and
slimey wolf. (And you haven't lived until you've seen the man in fangs,
fur trousers, a vest, and a long grey wig with big ears!) He also makes
a wonderful Prince and I don't think anyone could contain their laughter
when he and his Princely brother sang "Agony." (And, in case you're
wondering, his princely ensemble consists of beige jodphurs and a blue
coat with large, gold epulets!)

For any DOOL fans, Marilyn McIntyre (Jo Johnson) and Susan Hayes (Julie
Williams) were spotted in the audience. Marilyn now has short dark
brown hair and Susan now has short blonde hair! Both women looked
stunning. :-)

For anyone who's interested, "Into the Woods" will run thought January
19th at the Interact Theatre. For info, call: 818-773-7862

I give it a big thumbs up.

I LOVE that show! I got to see the original Broadway show on a trip to
NYC many moons ago, with Bernadette Peters as the witch. From that
cast, the wolf/Prince turned up on OLTL as the prince of a fake island
Dorian was ambassador to, & Chip Zien, the original Baker, did a
walkon on AMC & was a regular on Almost Perfect. It's so cool!
For the imaginative, I also highly recommend the cast album. The
lyrics are amazing, & just imagine the Wolf's big number sung by Tom
Hardy - or the princes charming's duet Agony, which contains these
lines:
<It's no sicker than your thing with dwarves/Dwarves?!? Dwarves are
very up-SET-ting.../>
Now that's culture! -S-

Also, there is a PBS version of the Bernadette Peters production for
anyone interested. My local library has it, so it's got to be widely
available. And, to keep this on topic. With the first post, I keep
picturing the Matt saying, "I was raised to be charming, not sincere."
Then, a pause with a raised eyebrow.

I love that show too! (as can be witnessed by my .sig quote.)
I'm one of those people who thinks Sondheim is a genius. Anyway, my
question is, how is Matthew Ashford's singing? I never knew
he sang, and a good singing voice is always an important factor to me
for a musical. Has he done other theatre? I never knew his credits beyond
Days of Our Lives and GH.
