AMC: fictional geographic shift?

Okay, when Zach started talking about newness, and clean beginnings, at first
I thought he was talking about he and Kendall having another baby. I have
ALL kinds of objections to that, so I'm glad that wasn't what happened
(objections include: Kendall doesn't have a lot of luck being pregnant; she's
barely had time to be with her two existing children; soaps look at
pregnancies and babies as the solution to every problem). But the talk about
moving -- and Joe and Ruth's talk about moving -- leads me to wonder if they
are going to have ALL of the characters actually pick up their fictional
lives and move to L.A. (I realize Joe and Ruth are leaving the canvas and
their characters are moving to FL, not CA). I mean, I can see Ryan moving
next -- to be with Spike, and to keep Emma from Annie. And Erica following
him, primarily for business reasons but secondarily to be with Ryan.
Followed by Jake and Amanda, to get away from David once they realize he
isn't dying. Followed by David chasing them. Etc. etc.
I would personally be really disappointed to see the show no longer be based
on the east coast. There are four decades of history behind this! Please,
someone who follows the soap press, tell me that I'm wrong and that the
show's fictional location isn't changing!

Maybe Zach and Kendall's departure and saying goodbye to that location,
was just to cover that set not being used again... but then again,
there are probably lots of sets that will be noticeably missing when
they move.
Anyway, I'm in your corner Aisling... I hope it's not an "on screen"
move to LA for the show too.

I don't think they're going to LA - a lot of people are hoping that Thorsten
Kaye reprises his role on OLTL. I think that Alicia's husband has a
business in NY plus they have a new baby.
I totally agree, Aisling, that the show moving to LA would not be a good
thing. What a slap in the face to Agnes Nixon that would be!!!

Well, now that I know the casting issue, I guess their comments -- and scene
yesterday -- make more sense. I am guessing from the anticlimactic exit, we
will be treated to recasts somewhere up the road. Otherwise, we might have
seen a bigger goodbye between Erica and Kendall, Kendall bidding farewell to
her big, "I-created-it-myself" company, more of an issue with Ryan about
taking Spike away, a scene of Kendall at Greenlee's so-called grave, etc. So
hopefully I was just reading the signs wrong, and the fictional town of Pine
Valley will still have a place on our screens.

I didn't know that. I hate to hear that, in case the show becomes
watchable again, after the Greenlee/Ryan "revival" show gets old. ;)

I've been reading this newsgroup for ages and ages now, but have never
responded to any posts before. I have been a faithful viewer of AMC
since 1973 and have NEVER considered giving up on it! And never will.
However, it seems to me there is some confusion creeping in here....
The location of MAKING the show is moving to LA, but everything is still
going to be based in good old Pine Valley. There is no slap in the face
to Agnes Nixon.
Kendall is not leaving; Alicia Minshew is simply taking some more time
off to spend with her husband and new baby. She certainly IS coming back
to AMC in a few months.
Unlike David and Erica, who are going to commute to shoot their scenes,
Thorsten Kaye does not want to live apart from his family during such
times, so he is not moving to LA...YET. With bad omens looming for One
Life To Live, I can see a deal being made with Kaye to return to AMC
once OLTL is canned. Then he would be free to move his family to
California and come back from their 'trip.' Oh, and the less airtime for
Erica, the better! What a Godsend THAT will be! I'm one of those who
also loves to hate David, so I'm glad he's not leaving the show entirely.
While I'm writing, I might as well voice my opinion of a few of the
other characters here.
Unlike many on this group, I really like the new Jake (the best so far,
IMO) and Amanda (I really wish this actress was staying on!).
I also saw nothing wrong with the last Colby and preferred her to the
new one. I will miss Petey.
Tad is wonderful....One of the best characters the show has ever had. He
never intended to kill the Evil Doctor; the flood did that, so I hold no
bad feelings against Tad for it. I was SO glad to see Evil Doc go.
I can no longer stand Ryan (and his whispers!) and the plotline with old
EEK makes me nauseous.
I love Greenlee (Rebecca Budig is the ONLY Greenlee!), the most
beautiful actress on any soap.
I never liked Brooke and was glad to see her go.
I couldn't stand the 'soldier' they brought in with Jake (see, I can't
even think of her name). No loss there, either.
And to really set some folks off, I could not STAND the actor who played
Jonathan Lavery, and was so relieved to see the last of him.
OK...That's it for now.

Thanks, Ralph -- we did ultimately figure that out. The confusion was mine;
since I don't follow casting matters, I didn't know that Alicia Minshew and
Thorsten Kaye were not moving to L.A. Thus, the talk of Kendall and Zach
going away someplace...combined with Joe and Ruth moving...plus Jake and
Amanda's arc ultimately moving toward need to get away from David (when they
find out he isn't dying)... All that combined to make me suspicious, and I
simply _wondered_ whether the powers that be were using the move -- and the
resulting change in some sets -- as an excuse to change the show's locale,
moving all of the remaining principles to yet another fictional town, this
one west coast.
Marilyn simply opined that, if this were true, it _would_ be a slap in the
face to Agnes Nixon.

That's not what I hear. I assumed it was going to be a recast when the
character returns. If you've heard differently, I'm delighted!

I don't mind Erica so much when they give Lucci the right material. Having

I'm wondering how they're going to bring back Kendall but not Zach, and
hoping that it doesn't lead to an Erica/Ryan/Kendall triangle which would be
VERY hard to stomach!

Well Kendall is a recast so apparently it is possible :-). While I
very much like both actors that play Kendall and Zach I do think they
could be replaced. It will be tough but I think people would accept
it if they get good actors (unlike their terrible choice for recast

Really, I think pretty much any character can be recast. I just
don't think the recast of a 'supercouple' ever works.
Don't like the new Liza, especially with Tad who is at his best when
he has a sense of fun. She just seems to have no sense of humor or
even anything remotely resembling it.
Not to mention the whole 'lady in black' thing they have going on.

I'm not sure why everyone's hackles are so raised by Jamie Luner as Liza; I'm
actually warming up to her. And I think she's at her best with Tad, in fact
(which is saying something because I dislike Tad SO much these days).
Anyway, my real issue with the character of Liza these days is the stupid and
implausible career arc. Not only is she suddenly the most competent lawyer
in town (after barely just graduating law school), but she's in line to
become D.A.??? Silly.

Tad or Jake are in a scene, even Ryan doesn't raise the hair on the back
of my neck. like those 2 clowns. I'm staying with the show because of
David--here's hoping he does lots of commuting. I hope Adam and Annie
stay with the show, but the new Colby should jump ship along with Liza,
Krystal and Amanda. Bring back Petey and keep Opal. I hope Erica's
visits are brief, and would love to see Bianca return. Some new writers
and some new characters might salvage the show.

My Thoughts- I also have been enjoying Jamie Lunar as Liza. The main
problem I have with it, if I think about it too much, is that she is
not the same Liza we all knew. She's a playing a different character
who happens to be called Liza. Marcy Walker's personality so captured
who Liza was- Jamie Lunar is quite different. That said, I think Lunar
is a good actress and certainly gorgeous- she looked better I thought,
in the scenes without all the heavy make up.In a funny way, her beauty
rewrites history a bit-Part of the original Jenny/Liza competition was
that Marcy Walker as the young Liza was not a lovely as Jenny,
inwardly or outwardly. Jamie Lunar is more a conventional heroine.
And I think this Liza can do better than Tad, who lost all of his
boyish appeal a long time ago and now just seems to be a sort of
sleazy perv who is unemployed and lives with his ex wife and mother.
Mr. Knight also seems to be phoning in the performances a lot
lately.But in fairness, he really isn't being given much to do.
Unlike a lot of other people here, I am enjoying Ricky Paul Goldin's
improvs and he and Knight's overtalking each other. They are having
fun with the silly script. Yesterday, Jake said two times- I am free
as a bird, was that an improv or a flub? I don't know. He made it
seem natural. The only thing I don't like is the make up on him-in
many scenes he looks quite orange. I don't know if anyone else is
noticing it...

I was never a fan of Marcie Walker....I couldn't understand how anyone
could find her the least bit attractive....so I'm just loving the new
Liza! I think it will be great to get she and Tad back together!
