Hey, I was just wondering something. Every once in a while when I am at work,
an add jingle from when I was little will pop into my head... For exa, ple:

"Nintendo, it's for breakfast now!
Nintendo, it's a cereal, WOW!
Nintendo, Super Mario jumps!
Nintendo, with a breakfast crunch!"

And because everyone I work with is within two years of my age, they often
remember the words as well. Anyway, this raised a question: What jingles from
your (you RATMMer, you!) remember from your youths? Also weird old shows...
For example, I can still sing the words to "Denver the Last Dinasour".

It's TALKIN' PEE-WEE!

Ah, but do you remember the original "rap" Zelda ads?
"It's the Legend of Zelda, and it's really RAD! Those creatures from Gannon are
really BAD!"
(the next verse is mentally garbled- something like "Octeroids, Teptites, and
Leapers too! But with your help, our hero pulls through! Yeah!
Yiggy-yiggy-yeah!")

>Anyway, this raised a question: What jingles from

Ice Cream Jones. He's bringing the kids his ice cream cones. A crunchy new
cereal for breakfast, with the great taste--
<beat>
Of ice cream cones! Whoaaaaaah!
<whiny kids appear>
"I want vanilla!"
"Give me chocolate chip!"
"They look like little ice cream cones!"
"And TASTE like 'em! Mmm!"

NEWWWWWW ICE CREAM CONES CEREAL!

You have no idea how many episodes of Transformers this ad absolutely ruined
for me.

>For example, I can still sing the words to "Denver the Last Dinasour".

"Denver, the last dinosaur! He's my friend and a whole lot more! Denver, the
last dinosaur! Show's me a world I sawwwww before! Everywhere I go! I don't
really care! If people stop and stare at my pal dino! From pre-history, to the
rock-and-roll spot light, I've found a friend who helps me make it through all
RIIIIIIIGHT! That's Denver, the last dinosaur! He's my friend, and a whole lot
more!" (repeat until it haunts your dreams for the rest of your life)

You know, it horrifies me that this generation is fast approaching some
positions of relative power. And I'm a member of it. ;-)

THANK YOU!!! Finally someone else who actually remembers the words to the Nintendo
Cereal commercial *AND* the old Zelda "rap" ads!! I can't even count the many
times that both of those have popped into my head and I would sing them to a friend
and they'd look at me like I was crazy or laugh at me as if I'd just made it up on
the spot. Once again I thank you! :P

I think I still have the very first episode on tape. I can sing it too,
that is really pathetic. I remember the Gummy Bears and can still sing
it. The Smurfs, Transformers, G. I. Joe, Ghostbusters, and Mr. Rogers
are some others I remember. I remember very vaguely the Carebears. I
used to get up before the crack of dawn to sit in front of the test
pattern so I wouldn't miss any cartoons on Saturday morning.

"You knocked my block off!" -- Rock 'Em, Sock 'Em Robots, circa 1965.

I just recently acquired a laserdisc with four episodes of Gigantor,
from the same time period. "Gigantor the space age robot! He's at your
command!" etc.-- Thought I'd get a good nostalgia dose, but these
weren't particularly clever cartoons, although you could call 'em
forerunners of anime.

Didn't the "ancient Chinese secret" Calgon commercial run for, like, 40
years?

Also, some deodorant (I think) commercial from the 60s, set in a
laundromat.

"Can you get this spot out?"
"Sure is hot out!"
"It's hotter in here. Whoo! I feel like a wet rag!"

I've no idea why I remember that.

I've a better idea why I remember a shaving cream ad from the early 70s
which had models cooing "Take it all off" at football players (Namath) &
the like. Gosh, that was clever.

Lessee now: "The wethead is dead." "Only her hairdresser knows for
sure." "Me & my Winstons, we got a real good thing." (Carlin: "What are
they doing with those cigarettes?")

There's likely more, but I think I ought to go earn my salary a bit--

Ah, that reminds me of the McD jingle we made fun of in grade school:

"McDonald's is your kind of place / They serve you rattlesnakes / They
stuff 'em in your face / They have no parking place--"

Or the one for Comet cleanser;

"Comet: it makes your mouth turn green! Comet: It tastes like Listerine.

The really inexplicable, albeit very cool, thing about "Tailspin" was
that they set it in the 1930s as interpreted by the pulp magazines of
the period. How many cartoons feature air pirates and do episodes
involving radio dramas?

What's even weirder is that Disney kinda-sorta did the same thing in
their next weekday afternoon cartoon, "Darkwing Duck", by dressing the
titular character in a double-breasted suit, fedora, and cloak and
arming him with a gas gun.

The "Coke Adds Life" campaign. Actually, I had forgotten it until I read
that it got mis-translated as "Coke Brings Your Ancestors Back From The Dead"
into Chinese. ;-{)> Oh, and one of my earliest TV memories was the "I'd like to
teach the world to sing in perfect har-mo-nee/I'd like to buy the world a
Coke..." ads with the kids on the hill holding the candles.
Oh, and the commercial for KISS dolls. "KISS! They look insane! It's
KISS!" %-{)>

>Also weird old shows...

[snip!]

Lots of these. Pretty much everything by Sid & Marty Krofft (strangely
enough, I'd never seen an episode of "Lidsville" until Nick At Nite ran that
retrospective a while back). Also, those Krofft-esque Filmation action shows
like "Shazam!" and it's cooler sister "Isis". Plus all sorts of weird
semi-educational kids' shows: "New Zoo Revue", "Just Kidding", "Vegetable
Soup", "Hot Fudge", "Gigglesnort Hotel", "The Electric Company", and the
original "Zoom" (featuring future "Newsradio" star Maura Tierney). Oh, and a
local puppet show called "Buster And Me", which surprisingly is still running.
KBHK Channel 44 used to show little shorts in between shows at times. I
remember there were a series of educational cartoons featuring a Big Bird-like
character named Fumble. There was also a weird live-action short called "The
Balloon Tree". And then there was "Snippets", little commercial-bumper things
about 30 seconds long telling you to eat a good breakfast, try new foods, be
polite, etc. I remember one with a bunch of tops (with faces) spinning, and all
but one would run down. This one would say, "I had a good breakfast this
morning! They didn't!" In another, schoolyard kids are given yogurt, and their
reactions are filmed. One kid says, "Tastes like purple!" Then they'd show the
word "Snippets" on the screen, and a chorus of kids would shout "Snippets!"
KTVU (Channel 2) had something similar called "Bits And Pieces", which included
many pleas for racial harmony, and had Wendy Carlos-like synthesizer
theme-music.
I also remember a 15-minute cartoon called "Jot", with a character who
looked like a cross between Casper and "The Jeep" from the old Popeye cartoons.
And I was there for the waning years of the original "Captain Kangaroo".

I thought of one, but someone else has probably already said it. I remember going
to my grandma's house in town (she had *good* cable and we didn't) and watching
Pinwheel. Part of that theme song sticks in my head to this day.

Pinwheel Pinwheel spinning around,
look at my pinwheel and see what I found.

That's pretty much all of it I can recall, but that's my only contribution right

Wow, I remember Jot! There's a jolt to the memory circuits. I think CBC
used to run it with Simon in the Land of Chalk Drawings (o/~"Well, you
know my name is Simon/And the things I draw come true..."o/~) that
partially inspired that SNL skit with Mike Myers in the tub (Cheeky bum
looker!).

The most obscure kids show I can remember is Vision On, which was a tv
show for deaf people! There were all these non-verbal skits and cartoons.
And I think Al Hirt's Java was their theme song.

swac
Then there was the Hamilton-filmed kids show The Treehouse, featuring a
dim-witted folk-singing host and his two bickering puppet sidekicks.
There's a format that never gets old!

I think that was what I liked about these shows, not being a big Disney fan
anyway. I suppose some folks would be upset by the 'classic' Jungle Book
characters being used in Talespin(not that Disney even invented Jungle Book to
begin with), but I enjoyed it.

Of course, I also liked Goldie Gold

Hmmm. I seem to remember watching a show on Nickelodeon when I was young that
involved a department store mannequin that came to life.. (yes folks, Mannequin
for Tots. Except the dummy was a guy) I also seem to recall there were puppets
involved. Only problem is, for the life of me I can;t remember anything else
about this show, and no one else seems to know it exists.
Can anyone here help out?

Well...if you did imagine it, you have a *really* good imagination, 'cause I
remember it too! Don't remember the name though. All I remember is that
the guy was a mannequin in a store, who wore a plaid sweater-vest or
something and one of those old-timey newsie caps. And there was a black
lady what wore a red dress. And it was from Canada, as most of Nick's old
programming was.

Ah, yes. I watched Pinwheel religiously as a kid. Let's see if I

Cocoa the Mime
Ebeneezer
Plus and Minus
Hobo Bugs
Molly the Mole
Silus the Snail
That fortune teller lady
Two other humans that I can't remember

Plus they showed some weird cartoons, many of them foreign. I can
remember Bagpuss, Oscar, Alphie, those bug cartoons, and that
live-action segment of a kid gone frog-hunting only to have it follow

That's all I can remember. Any others?

Seriously though, didn't we have a thread like this last year at the

chunk of it was about "Today's Special"? As I recall, it somehow led to

2. A Spanglish show that had its set on a giant turntable...

That would be the aforementioned Vision On (and thanks for confirming this
wasn't some sort of weird childhood fever dream)

Hmmm...I think that's when the drugs kicked in (actually, didn't someone
mention this show already?)

Gem is outrageous! Man. One of my aunts gave me a Gem book when I was a little

gave me all of her daughter's Sweet Valley High books. Man. I should have known

Oh, man, that reminds me of these tests we had to take every year in high
school. They were some kind of writing exam called "WADDUP." What it stood for,
I don't know or care. But it would lead to hearing our losery vice-principal
wandering onto the loudspeakers and saying crap like, "What up, Lancers. Time
for the annual WADDUP tests..." They'd give us a stupid question that one of the
teachers made up and 30 minutes to write an essay on it.

Naturally, because of the idiotic nature of the questions ("How would you solve
homelessness using the scientific method?" and "Is Charles Barkley a role
model?" are two that stick in my mind) and the pointlesness of the exam (you
would write your name, then cover it with a sticker so it was an "anonymous"
test wtf?), many students protested it.The year of the homeless question,
Lindsay wrote the lyrics to "American Pie". I drew sheep. But my friend Greg..
Ah, bless Greg. He filled an entire page, front and back, with those Meow Mix
meows. Of course, Greg and I did not write our names. Lindsay was stupid enough
to write her name though, so she was called to the vice-princepal's office.
::cackles:: The losery vp asked Lindsay what the lyrics were and Lindsay said,
"It's a song." The vp tried sarcasm and failed. "So why don't you sing it,
then?" Lindsay, never a shy chick, started singing the song. :D

This show still comes on in the morning on the Odyssey Channel. Right
before Fraggle Rock and the Muppet Show.

The phrase he used to transform into Gizmoduck was "Blathering

That about covers it.

Do not sully the name of Christine with your accusations! Alanis
Morisette was known on the show as...

Alanis. I think she was only on for, like, one season... What happened
to the rest of the kids, I wonder?

Why, yes, I was a regular watcher. "A day in the life of a food" never
failed to crack me up... (:

>If so, what the hell was it about?? :P

Chaos, I think. (: It seemed to be just... stuff, thrown together with
animated skits featuring a turkey living in "Pilgrim Days" (you could
tell, 'cause they wore those hats with buckles on 'em). I was never
sure how much of it was original, and how much was culled from other
sources.

While we're asking for help, does anyone else remember "Mad Movies"?

Hey, I was in elementary school with Lisa Ruddy, before she went on to
fame and fortue. I wonder what the hell happened to her...

Ah, nobody forgets the classics. There is a scene in the old Parent
Trap movie, where the Hayleys are banished to the isolation cabin, and
the whole camp is following them there. The camp is whistling the song,
and the Comet version always goes through my head.

WOOOO!!! TURKEY TELEVISION!!!
soooo much funnier than YCDTOTV, imho

I had "Two Triple Cheese Side Order Of Fries" dubbed onto a cassette
tape when I was a kid

actually, one of the strangest things I ever saw was on Turkey TV and
I walways wondered what it was....

there was this corny music playing the entire time, mainly just some
people whistling...
but the clip was a bunch of huge cardboard picnic items (tomatoes,
beer bottles, etc.) with people inside them so that you'd only see
people's legs walking around under the cutouts....
they just kinda walked around for a while on the side of this big
grassy hill and danced a little and all the regular bottles bowed when
a GIANT beer bottle came over the hill

like I say, VERY bizarre
