Well, actually it's not all that unlikely, but nobody knows who she is. Or do
you?

Ever hear of Liz Vassey?

She's starred in an episode of Quantum Leap, a failed sitcom on UPN (yes,
technically, the term "failed sitcom on UPN" is redundant), and a pilot for a
first-run syndicated show called Captain Zoom (don't ask).

She's... neeeeeeeeeat.

Yes, I have, as a matter of fact.

She also did an episode of ST:TNG (the one where everybody gets mind-wiped and
Riker and Ro end up doing the horizontal mambo), and did about three years on
ALL MY CHILDREN as Emily Ann Sago-Martin (if I recall correctly -- Couscous, can
you confirm? -- she was last seen being carted off to a psycho ward after trying
to murder her husband's mistress).

The "faild sitcom on UPN," by the way was PIG STY.

We have another winnah! Yes, the sitcom was called Pig Sty.

And I've decided that I'm gonna start posting a "B-Movie Princess of the Day"
message!
I'll cover a brief videography/filmography, the actress's style, her good
points, and her bad points (and yes, Noah and Mike Czaplinski, her REALLY bad
points), among other things. I can't promise that it will be a true "daily
post", but I think I can keep quality up.

Okay if I start Monday?

Why "Merritt," here in the untidy world of civilian life, there is one
rule that reigns supreme:

"It is easier to get forgiveness than ask permission."

You go, boy!

By the way, does anyone out there read any of the B-movie or cult film
magazines regularly? There are several, and I know at least one is
rather disrespectful of MST3K. I've always loved B movies and cult
films (even the ones without nudity, believe it or not), and I'd love to
pick one for subscription. However, I wouldn't want to support any
periodical which does not respect my favorite program.

Magazines.....hmmmmm I really can't think of any good ones to begin
with. The last mangazine I got was on a regular basis was "Sentai" But
that went on "hiatus." I'm not sure if that even counts, since it was
more about the television side of things rather than movies. But they
did always have news on new Gamara ang Godzilla movies.

Either that or they have wary business practices. "Cinafantastic"<sp?>
comes to mind. The stories I've heard about them.

I still prefer the old fifties stuff myself. Although the scream queen
type of films are entertaining now and again. I'm boring that way. The
original "Night of the Living Dead" is still my favorite.

Oh yeah, I can't believe I didn't bring this up earlier, but first Dark
Horse Comics started publishing adaptations of the Japanese Godzilla
comics, but those were actually pretty good. But now they've started
adapting the tales of everybody's favorite atomic fling turtle, Gamera!

Ah, yes. I don't know about anyone else, but NOTLD is tied with
Halloween (which I saw on this Halloween) as the scariest movie I've

I don't know how many actually support what MST3K does - personally, I
like a lot of B / cult type movies on their own, so have happened on
chance to a couple of B mags... most that I see don't really mention
MST3K.

The most negative reaction I've seen comes from the sci-fi crowd,
particularly Jap monster movie lovers (of which I'm also sortav one, and of
which I would think many would be happy to see utter crap like _Godzilla
vs. the Sea Monster_ get ripped. But hey...)... The crowd I've heard the
LEAST from (general impression), OTOH, is the teen flick crowd. I've
heard no complaints about a film like Girls Town being MSTed, probably
because most are aware that this type of stuff is fun schlock already.
(: Dunno...

You might want to check out SCREAM QUEENS ILLUSTRATED (on the Web @
www.screamqueen.com), FEMME FATALES (although it IS from the people
who publish CINEFANTASTIQUE) or DRACULINA. They tend to be mostly
horror-based, but they all cover (and uncover) the B-movie scene
(or more specifically, the current crop of B-movie actresses) fairly
well.

[very respectful snippage]

Thank you, David. I was a fan of B movies long before there was an
MST3K, partly because they didn't always seem to take themselves too
seriously (I'll never grow up, I guess, and don't particularly want to).

I've read "Femme Fatales" at least once, and I'll check out "Scream

I've gotta admit, she does look kind of good. For someone who's
pregnant. But then, the best thing about her and the whole movie was
those addicting accents.

I LOVE that movie, but I don't really count it as the scariest I've ever
seen. It's more the kind of scares where you jump, you scream...and then
you laugh. Because it's fun. On the other hand NOTLD and Halloween were
just impossibly, unrelentingly scary start to finish.

Agreed. But in the context you used, what is the connotation of
potatoey? Baked potatoey (dry, clotted)? Mashed potatoey (mushy,
textureless)? The adjective sounds fascinating, but I don't quite get a

Personally, I think it makes sense in the context of Liz Vassey eventually
becoming the "bouncing betty" of the b-movie/TV world. After all, both "Liz"
and "Betty" are shortened forms of "Elizabeth", and further, Liz Vassey
_definitely_ has a bouncy quality about her...

I read these in the bookstore/newsstand and buy an issue if it has sufficient
enough images to add to my MSTed Movie Gallery webpage. It is true many in
the B-Movie crowd can''t stand to see what they regard as high art (gawd knows
why) made fun of. Of the mags out there, I'd definitely reccomend Filmfax.
It has consistently interesting articles and interviews on a range of B
movies, almost always about at least one film featured on MST. And I can't
speak to the attitudes of everyone on the magazine, bt their sister mag,
Filmfax Outre, had a favorable article about MST3k:tM back earlier this year.

So, that's my recommedation. Enjoy.

Well, I worked at Target for a year and a half, as a cashier. So I'd meet

On the way out from Minneapolis, one of the check-in ladies at the
airport had a very strong Minnesota-style accent... moreso in fact than
what was seen in Fargo. Definitely noticeable, but I imagine in the city
the accent isn't as heard... it's like down in the South, finding a
Southern accent in Atlanta is tougher than it appears. That's only a
guess, though...

Filmfax is an excellent B-movie mag. But to fill in some of the details
about MST bashing mags (or in this case, one writer) Filmfax regularly
publishes someone known as Stuart Galbraith IV, a notorious, and dare I
say it, even *anal* MST hater. Some of the regulars may remember the
little flame war he was involved in on ratm a couple of years ago.

He's really not a bad writer, even got a book on the history of Japanese
monster movies published (in which, I understand, he takes the time to
berate MST for making fun of these Japanese *art* movies) he's just a
little obsessed.

That sounds about right. Don't remember exactly. But I do now how
it escalated after some idiot bad-mouthed his wife, (who didn't
have anything to do with anything), and he started talking about
lawsuits (!) and crap. Strange guy.

I've seen the future of horror and its name is Pauly Shore.

Hey, yeah! That was about the time I dropped out of the group for

Not like that. The guy's a dick.

No, that was Diane Franklin (another potential candidate, by the way, MS).
THE LAST AMERICAN VIRGIN was just a bit before Liz Vassey's time (I'm guesing
she'd have been about ten or so when it came out).

Some of the highlights of Diane Franklin's career, incidentally, include an
Australian-made romp called SECOND TIME LUCKY, where she got to spend an
inordinate amount of time nude or nearly so in the company of Roger Wilson (of
PORKY'S "fame"); BETTER OFF DEAD, where she portrayed the plucky French exchange
student who told John Cusack that the secret to skiing is simply to "go 'zat
way -- very fast...if somesing get in your way...turn!"; and HOW I GOT INTO
COLLEGE, where she played Corey Parker's not-especially-likeable stepmother.

You talkin' to me?

If you are; yes, that's bound to be my one weak spot when it comes to
parenting. I'm sure I'll be dreaming the same thing: the next Mozart. I'll
probably push my kid to go into music, and it'll be one big bloody mess.
