Stage Curtain Rope

The rope for our main curtian is fraying badly at a termination point
on one side of the curtain. The outside jacket is not present for at
least 2 feet, and it seems to be holding entirely with the inside
core(s). The curtain is a total of 36 feet wide, and 14 feet high,
center-divided. The current rope seems to be about 3/8", but is also at
least 40 years old. We're trying to track down the proper rope to
replace it with. We know we need about 110 feet of it, which is longer
than anything off-the-shelf at the 'Depot.

Looking any tips on getting the right rope, how-to's on replacing it,
or advice to get a rigger to do it inexpensively. The church may
replace the entire curtain in a couple years, quotes on a new curtain
were in the range of $6500.

variety of materials and thicknesses, and will finish the ends for you.
I don't know Northport, but you shouldn't have any trouble finding a
marine store anywhere on Long Island. I do know Defender, in
Waterford, CT has a good selection. Unfortunately, you just missed
their annual sale, but their prices are still pretty good.

If you really have no idea what kind of rope to buy, I suggest cutting a
section of the existing rope, and bringing it with you. Tell the rope
guy that you want to replace what you have and what you're using it for.
(If you can describe it in layman-to-nautical terms, that will
help--they won't have any clue what a fly system is, but relating
raising a curtain to raising a sail will help.)

I will second what Sarah said about a marine supply house. Take a
sample of the rope with you, and they'll fit you out with exactly
what you want. If it holds up a sail, it'll haul your rag.

$6500 is in the right range for a main rag. I recommend Joseph C.
Hansen in NY. I get a great product at a great price, and in a
timely fashion. They may give you a good price on rope if you
order your curtain from them, too.
