Im wondering if spirit gum will adhere metal spikes/studs to body
parts. Everything else I've read refers to latex, etc, but not
specifically metal objects.
Anyone have an answer? Much appreciated!

Hi Jim,
In a nutshell there are a wide variety of spirit gums from different
manufacturers--Ben Nye, Kryolan, Mehron, RCMA and others.. There's
regular spirit gum, and medical grade spirit gum which is stronger in
adhesion. Plus there are other adhesives--beta bond (which has its own
solvent), Pros Aide (more for appliances but can be used on skin--do
NOT peel off--use the solvent) and Duo Surgical adhesive which
contains latex and can be used around eyes safer then regular high
content ammonia latex. Each has its uses..and in FX make-up its best
to try to experiment and see which will do for you what you need it to
do for the application. Adhereing metal spikes and so on will depend
a lot on the WEIGHT of the spikes/studs--and if they pull on the skin
area you attach them to. Also is how "rough" they will need to stick
on or last in a make up application. Also--the metal is most likely
chromed which would normally make an adhesive tougher to grip the stud
or spike--a little latex or collodion could help the grip. I doubt
regular spirit gum would work for a rough situation, so you may wish
to try a stronger bond adhesive like medical grade spirit gum
(Kryolan) and move up slowly from there. Try a search for Special
effect make-up and you will see a lot of the supplies and various
things can be found online if you cannot get them locally.
hope that helps answer your question..

Maybe yes, maybe no. What you really need to do is find things that
_look_ like metal spikes but are much lighter. My favorite place to
look for cheap plastic things that can be made to look like other
things is the local party supply store.
Eyelash glue is excellent for gluing things to skin, and kinder than
spirit gum. You might be able to get metal spikes to stick with spirit
gum, but I wouldn't feel confident about the staying power; real metal
is just too heavy, especially if the actor is moving much, or
generating much sweat.

Hi, Jim in Missoula! What are you up to? And fancy meeting a fellow
Montanan here in RATS. Tell us a little more about your project, and
maybe we can help more -- theatre or real life? How close to the
audience? Stage or film? Where do you need to attach these things
(knuckles are difficult)?
I'm currrently working with Equinox and Bridger Mt. Theatre Festival
in Bozeman.

Follow up:
Actually the application would be to place these small, (1/2") metal
spkes on my shaved head during footballs games (Griz of course) and be
a rowdy ass fan. So, I'd be sweating of course. Just looking for the
strongest adhesive that wont break down with sweat, won't eat through
my skin, and can come off fairly easily.
Thankks for the help fellows!

Hey Jim, well given that location and that much sweat, it may sound a
bit bizarre but I would try a dab of Denture Adhesive..like Polygrip.
Seriously--it works in wierd places. Its designed to stick and be firm
when wet, and it won't eat at your scalp. The medical grade sprit
gum would otherwise suffice most likely.
Hope that helps ya... cheers!

Ah. Well, spirit gum is None of the Above. But wolfies had some good
suggestions. Also, you might call PNTA in Seattle (800) 622-7850. You
can talk to someone who actually messes around with makeup and knows
the products, and in my experience, they're very helpful (I called
them once with an odd question [about product x vs. product y for
durability in outdoor use], and they asked around the customers in the
shop at the time to see if anyone happened to know for sure -- someone
did). They also ship very quickly -- in Bozeman I get shipments in a
couple of days, regular mail.
