Does any one know of a paint which will be of neutral colour until
sprayed with water. The idea is to have a character spray graffiti on
a stone wall - but to produce the effect with water rather than paint
- so that a) the writing is readable and b) no chance of paint getting
where it shouldn't. I remember painting books for children where
colour is activated with just water but (for me at least) google
didn't through up anything useful.

Any ideas - including alternative solutions to the problem - much
appreciated.

Paul,

The most immediate thought that comes to mind for a possible solution
would be to paint the design with a Wildfire or Rosco black light
clear paint (actually looks a tad milky) and hit it with some UV black
light at the appropriate moment. It would be more successful with a
HMI unit rather than a 4' tube.

If your surface is flat, as in not 3-D, a second thought would be the
old back paint gimmick. Back paint a muslin covered flat with flat
black paint and the graffiti pattern masked off with a stencil. When
the black back paint dries, you can tint the unpainted graffiti area
with thin paint or dye to get a color. Now paint the desired design
on the front of the flat. When the flat is back lit the writing will
appear. If you put a piece of cardboard between the back of the flat
and the back light unit, then pull it slowly away the writing will
seem to appear one letter at a time as the cardboard is pulled away.

Just a couple of quick thoughts, HTH.
