Is anyone familiar with the plays of Slavmir Mrozek? I've read Out at Sea
and I have heard of the Martrydom of Peter O'Hay. Does anyone know any of
his other plays and a good source to obtain copies of the scripts? Any
information on him is appreciated. Thanks!

Post or e-mail.

Tango is probably the most famous. It's been published in English but I
don't have the info handy.

I no longer have a copy of the script, so I can't help with the source,
but a few years ago I did incidental music for a production of a play of
his entitled VATZLAV.

I also have a copy of the book "6 Plays by S.M.", and went through a great
deal of trouble to find it and then buy it. I did a production of "Out at
Sea" and "The Party" a few years ago, and discovered that both of these plays
(infact, the "6 Plays" book) are out of print. I had to call Mr. Mrozek's
agent in Switzerland to get permission to photocopy the script from my book to
use during rehearsals (performance permission was still through Samuel
French).

Anyway, I know that my public library has a few books of plays by him
(including "Striptease" and "Vatslav"). I also know that my old university
library had copies, and some in the original Polish too. If there is anything
I can do to help someone get a copy of a script, let me know.

P.S. Check out my web page at: www.inforamp.net/~cmv/scp
The sections on the Mrozek plays are a bit under-construction, but at
least there are some pretty poster designs!

Grove Press has an "Evergreen Original" edition titled,"Six
Plays by Slawomir Mrozek"

The collection includes: "The Martyrdom of Peter Ohey"
"Enchanted Night" "The Police" "Out at Sea" "Charlie" and
"The Party"

P.S. Be certain to correctly spell Mr. Mrozek's first and
last name (and the play titles) when conducting a search...

About five years ago, Mrozek was in Minneapolis on a fellowship at the
Playwrights' Center, and I had the marvelous opportunity to work with
him for the two weeks he was here.

We did workshops of two plays that had been recently translated, but not
published yet in English: The Ambassador, and A Summer's Day.

The former is about an East European bureaucrat who suddenly is left
without meaning in his life when his government disappears. Believe it
or not, this was written in the early 80's, a decade before many such
people were faced with that eventuality.

Mrozek was quite ill at the time he was in town. His visit had been
postponed a number of times because of heart trouble. I do not know if
he is still living. If so, he lives on an estate outside of Mexico City.

I directed "Tango" in a former life...must have a script somewhere, all
depends on how important and how deep I have to dig.

In bookstores in New York I have seen paperback copies of a new stage
version put out by the British publisher Faber & Faber. Sorry that I cant
remember the author of the script.

Mrozek's earliest international success was TANGO, in the 60's, when Poland was under communist suppression, and he was a daring voice. Evergreen published alot of these 60's plays, and are probably still around in used-book sources, although probably no longer in most libraries. VATZLAV, another early one, is also excellent. Hard to appreciate how important a rebel theatre force he was in his time. And another indication of how theatre is often at the forefront against dictatorships and suppression.
