A student asked me if this tune was from a musical and I don't know ... part
of me wants to say yeah. I don't know all the lyrics, but the end of the
chorus (I think) goes:

"Sing Hallelujah, Come on, Get Happy .. Get ready for the judgement day!"

Who wrote this? Where's it from? Any ideas??

The actual quote is

"Shout Hallelujah, come on Get Happy"

And it's from the show "Hit The Deck" by Vincent Youmans

No; the song from "Hit The Deck" is called simply "Hallelujah" and it begins
"Sing Hallelujah, Hallelujah, and you'll shoo the blues away."

The song Pete was asking about is called "Get Happy," music by Harold Arlen,
lyrics by Ted Koehler. I don't know if it was from a show, but I don't think so.

From Lewine & Simon's "Songs Of The Theatre":

Get Happy - from "Nine-Fifteen Revue" (1930)

"Arlen was filling in as a rehearsal pianist for Vincent Youmans' "Great Day"
(he was actually one of the show's orchestrators). He became bored with the
obligatory "pick up", or vamp, the two bars the pianist plays preceding an
actual start to set tempo, and began improvising his own two bars. The result
was the opening strain of "Get Happy." After "The Nine Fifteen Revue" it was
sung as Judy Garland in the film "Summer Stock" (1950.)"

Somehow, Richard picked up on the Youman's connection. Cosmic...

It's also in the recent Clinique Happy commercials if anyone cares... :)

Sounds like Judy Garland is singing it

It's from the film SUMMER STOCK -- sung by Judy Garland in her tux
jacket, heels, and hat. Great stuff.

Get Happy - from "Nine-Fifteen Revue" (1930)
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Just an addendum, since the question has now been answered:
"Get Happy" was Arlen's first hit song.

I think it was Arlen's first published song, wasn't it? Anyway, it was the
song that got him into songwriting, leading to one of the most inspired and
productive careers in American popular music. Thank God for "Get Happy"!

I just saw a quote from Audra M. re. her new album. She doesn't generally
do older songs, but she can't resist Harold Arlen's. He's been the favorite
composer of so many singers: Judy Garland, Barbra Streisand, etc. etc. And
now Audra, too.

Not only is Arlen's music incredibly sophisticated and inventive
harmonically, he has that everflowing gift for memorable melody that some of
us miss in ... er ... certain other Broadway composers. And of course he
worked with the creme de la creme of U.S. lyricists: Harburg, Mercer, Ira
Gershwin ... my God, what a career the man had! I think the magnitude of
his acheivement is only beginning to be recognized.

I completely agree! I think Harold Arlen is one of the most underrated
composers. So many great singers love and sing his music and yet so many people
know his songs without even knowing they were composed by him. Now, if only
they'd reissue that House of Flowers CD...

Take care,

I think "Summer Stock" is my favorite movie musical...more than
"Singin' In The Rain", more than "Wizard of OZ"....ok,ok, my favorite
Judy Garland musical...there. But still more than "Singin'". Phil
Silvers, Hans Conried, Marjorie Main, Eddie Bracken...AND Gene Kelly.
If you don't know it, find it! Great musical numbers, and that "Get
Happy" number, which still blows me away. Oops, forgot "Star Is
Born". Ok, my second favorite Judy Garland musical!

I love SUMMER STOCK, but I rank WIZARD, ST. LOUIS, HARVEY GIRLS, EASTER
PARADE and STAR IS BORN above it, both in quality and for pure
enjoyment. But I think we can agree they're all enjoyable.

Happy harvest,

Biff

It might be confused with " Hallelujah"
a Vincent Youman's big hit from the
l927 Broadway " Hit the Deck" as it starts
out with "Sing, Hallelujah" also sung by
the cast , including Debbie Reynold, Ann
Miller, Tony Martin, Vic Damone, in the
MGM film ' Hit the Deck" .l955
