I asked several months ago, with little response. So I thought I'd
try this again.

Does anyone have a libretto for the Vienna cast of POTO? (I'd
be happy to have the Hamburg cast libretto, as well .... but it's
Vienna that has the particularly interesting lyrics.) Even the
double CD doesn't include one and my German is questionable enough
without the added difficulty of translating while someone is
singing!

Any suggestions of where/how to lay my paws on one would be
appreciated.

I can't help you, but I also have the Vienna cast, and would like the
lyrics. My german is good enough to understand what is going on most
of the time, but I would love to have a lyric book.

BTW.....
I am going to Germany over Christmas and would like some recomendations
of some cast recordings in German. I have:

Phantom of the Opera (Vienna)
Cats: Live (Hamburg)
Les Miz (Vienna?)
Little Shop of Horrors (not sure of the city)
Three Penny Opera (Concept with Lotta Lenya)

Any recomendations can be mailed to me at

Thanks in advace

You might also consider the Vienna Highlights CD of Cats (though it is
occasionally available in the US)--while only an hour long, it does have
some good performances. If you're an Ute Lemper fan, I believe she plays
Bombalurina.

If you like A Chorus Line, check out the Vienna cast CD (also sometimes
available in the US), as it's a bit longer than the Broadway cast CD.

There's supposed to be a Hamburg Highlights recording of Das Phantom
(I don't have it), numerous recordings of Starlight Express, and the
German language version of Miss Saigon is supposed to open this
winter (though I doubt they'll have any cast recording in time for
your vacation).

Kimberly,

The Vienna recording of "Phantom" does include the entire lyrics
to the show in German, both the sung and unsung! There is a catch, however,
as no one with the CD version will have them. Only the double LP has the
libretto in German, complete. I saw a copy of the Vienna cast album in a
double LP format at Footlight records last June............most likely, it
will still be there as most people will but the CD. I have both and the nice
thing about the LP is that is has some photos that are not in the CD, they are
bigger and nicer, and of course, you get all the lyrics in German.

Funny, because Michael Kunze (the translator of almost all shows that
go to Germany and Vienna, and a good one too) did both the Hamburg and Vienna
lyrics to "Phantom" yet they are different in some aspects. Perhaps it is a
regional thing?

The "Kleine Horror Laden" (Little Shop Of Horrors) is from Berlin, I
believe, and features some fabulous voices.

I would agree on the reccomendation for the Vienna recording of "A Chorus
Line," one of the best foreign recordings of that show around....mainly
because they record the entire show, with a great, exuberant opening and
wonderful orchestrations all throughout the numbers, particularly memorable
in "Hello Twelve, Hello Thirteen...," "The Music and the mirror" dance section,
and as mentioned before the opening.

If you want to get a "Starlight Express" album, there are currently three
German versions to choose from. The first is a 1988 studio album done with
the leads from the original cast and with orchestrations of a "pop" and "disco"
nature. My friend told me that the numbers were released on the radio around
the time of the show's opening and some numbers even had popularity. Anyways,
the versions that you hear here are not how you would hear them in the theare,
but the voices are spectacular, especially Steven Michael Skeels' Rusty and
his interpretation of the title song.....one of the best recorded. The
greaseball actor and his opening song also contain about as much energy that
you could possibly muster from that number.

The 1990 double disc "live" album and the 1992 recording play the numbers as
they would be heard in the theatre and are very good...the latter for its
solid singing and the former for having every note of music the show contains,
true to a live recording as any........but i guess these albums would be for
fans mostly.

The 1990 Hamburg recording of "Phantom" is a really great investment. Peter
Hoffmann is a fantastic interpreter of the title role and his singing is solid
throughout. Anna Maria Kaufmann also does a good job of Christine,
especially on "Denk an Mich." Together, they sing my favorite version of
"Point of no return" ("von nun an gibt es kein zuruck"). It also has my
favorite Piangi, which is strange because I never took notice of this
character (and still really don't) until I heard the performance of the
"Hannibal" exerpt they have. The way he nails those notes at the end sends
shivers up my spine...he has a great voice!

If you could find it, I would definately pick up the 1980 Vienna recording
of "Evita." It is on a single LP (maybe CD by this time but I have never seen
it) and contains two of the best Evas and Ches ever, Isabel Wickman (?) and
Alexander Goebel. Her interpretation of Eva is of a cunning and smart Eva, and
that of Goebel's Che is the same, and their chemistry off each other is so
powerful you can just imagine what it must have been to watch them. Another
highlight of the album is a great version of "Rainbow High"

If you find a place that has that album, they mighe have the 1978 German
"Jesus Christ Superstar." It has all the lyrics in German and also features
Steve Barton as Jesus. I would get it just to hear his interpretation of
Jesus with his rich baritone.

If you are into musicals like the ones that are ususally discussed on the net,
then you probably liked the last Disney musicals. In that case, you might
try picking up the German soundtrack of "beauty and the beast." Under the
title of "Die Schon und das Biest" it has Peter Hoffmann sing the role of the
beast and Jenna Werner sind belle. the opening number (the title track) sounds
great in German and even the single version of the title song (the one for
radio play) sounds great, mainly because the performers doing the song (Werner
and Hoffmann) don't just sing it but also perform it, so there is none of that
Regina Belle/Peabo Bryson type of "popping" the number up. I mean, yeah it
is "poopy" in its orchestrations, but it is sung in a pure, straightforward,
and honestly musical way.

Hope you have fun in Germany

You might be interested in 'Extrablatt' the German version of 'Windy City'
which was released recently.

The Vienna cast of Les Miz is quite good. It's also available pretty
readily in the states, so you may not want to bother getting it there.
