We all know that there are some original musical books as well as those
that come from other sources such as novels (too many to name), poems
(Cats), historical basis (Civil War), movies (Big). My question is this
- has there ever been a musical that was based on an original TV show or
series. For the life of me I can't think of any, but two mind as
potential candidates - Roots and All in the Family.

I know there have been Brady Bunch shows...I don't know if they're musicals.
And there's Schoolhouse Rock Live, from the commercial-like blurbs on ABC
Saturdays.

*Happy Days* the 'new 50's musical' based on the Paramount TV series.

It's currently touring the UK and is expected in London's West End before
the year is out....

'Happy Days - the musical' is merrily touring the UK as we
speak.

There was a flop musical with Kaye Ballard called "Molly", I think, which
was based on "The Goldbergs", which I know was a television show in the late
40's or early 50's. It was originally a radio show, so I don't know if that
counts.

In the musical "Weird Romance", Act II, "Her Pilgrim Soul", was originally a
Twilight Zone episode from what I've heard.

ME: "Her Pilgrim Soul" began life as a short story by Alan Brennert.
When Alan was a producer on the revival of TWILIGHT ZONE a few years
ago, it was adapted into an episode...and it was later adapted for
WEIRD ROMANCE.

"Ballroom"-the show Michael Bennett directed immediately after "A Chorus Line".
It was based on a movie of the week special (NBC, I think) called "Queen of the
Stardust Ballroom."
If I'm not mistaken, someone else has done something with this property, or
they've adapted it with a slightly different name.

It starred Dorothy Loudon, fresh from Annie. (Bennett's show, that is)

A few years ago in Britain there was 'Prisoner Cell Block H - The Musical',
based on the long-running (and often unintentionally hilarious) Australian soap
opera 'Prisoner'.

I forgot about that one! It was at London's Queen's Theatre for about ten weeks
over Xmas 1995 - it starred Lily Savage who was recently seen in the revival of
Annie and was written by Don Battye and Peter Pinne.

There was also a non-musical stage version of Cell Block H which run for about a
week at London's Dominion Theatre in 1989.

There was *Good Rockin Tonight* which played in London's West End in 1992.

Written and devised by Jack Good it was based in the '6-5 Special', one of
the first pop music television programmes in the UK in the early 60's,
which was producted by Jack Good.

It initially played a limited season at the Strand Theatre, which was
succesful and led to the musical transferring first to the Playhouse
Theatre and then to the Prince of Wales Theatre - clocking up a run of
just over eight months.

Two other TV to Stage productions - comedies not really musicals - are
both from the Jimmy Perry and David Croft writing team:

*Allo Allo* which seemed to be always coming in and out of London's West
End between mid 80's to early 90's and *Hi De Hi* in 1983. AFAIR these two
productions featured a lot, if not all, of the original TV casts.

BALLROOM? Based on "Queen of the Stardust Ballroom" which was, I believe, a TV
movie.

I do believe this had its world premiere here in San Diego.

Wasn't there a show based on Gerry Anderson's Thunderbirds playing in the
West End some eight years ago?
I think it played at the Ambassador and I think it was called F.A.B. .
