I've got Evita without the track listing and I know it's about Eva Peron, but
who is the Guy who sounds like Neil Diamond supposed to be? And what's this
insecticide he's always going on about?
-Any help would be appreciated.

The singer in question is Colm Wilkinson of Les Miz fame. The character
he is playing is Che, loosly based on real-life Argentine revolutionary
Che Guevara who fought to put Fidel Castro in power in Cuba. The song you
refer to, "The Lady's Got Potential", was cut from the show prior to the
original staging in London. You might also recognize the voice of Peron's
mistress, singing "Another Suitcase In Another Hall", - Barbara Dickson,
who starred in Chess and sang "I Know Him So Well" along with Elaine
Paige. Dickson also was the original star of Blood Brothers.

Actually, your "Neil Diamond" is Che Guevera, of course a central figure
in "Evita". Che Guevera, a medical student in Argentina during Evita's
tenure as First Lady of Argentina, had developed a new insecticide during
this time. Rice and Lloyd Webber originally incorporated this tidbit in
the original concept album, but realized it had nothing to do with
nothing in time for the show to reach the London stage, and took out the
song in which the reference appeared, "The Lady's Got Potential". Hope
this helps.

yes, the insecticide subplot *is* quite a bizarre thing!!! interesting
that it never made it to stage--although there are musical motifs in the
staged version that refer to the insecticide theme. In the concept album,
che's idea was that he was going to rise to fame through this insecticide,
and that eva was going to help him by promoting it...but she wasn't
interested & he turned bitter. obviously one of tim & andrew's less
brillant ideas...good thing they dropped it!!!

I know many people have already helped you solve the insecticide problem
(Boy, am I glad that subplot got dropped in a big hurry!), but you said
you didn't have the track listing, so here you go:

3. On This Night Of A Thousand Stars / Eva And Magaldi / Eva
Beware Of The City / 7:09
4. Buenos Aires / 3:41
5. Goodnight And Thank You / 3:31
6. The Lady's Got Potential / 4:39
7. Charity Concert / I'd Be Surprisingly Good For You / 6:07
8. Another Suitcase In Another Hall / 3:58
9. Dangerous Jade / 3:34
10. A New Argentina / 7:09

Disc Two:
1. On The Balcony Of The Casa Rosada / Don't Cry For Me Argentina
/ 9:06
2. High Flying, Adored / 4:24
3. Rainbow High / 2:31
4. Rainbow Tour / 5:18
5. The Actress Hasn't Learned The Lines (You'd Like To Hear) / 2:40
6. And The Money Kept Rolling In (And Out) / 2:28
7. Santa Evita / 1:49
8. Waltz For Eva And Che / 3:48
9. She Is A Diamond / 2:56
10. Dice Are Rolling / Eva's Sonnet / 6:10
11. Eva's Final Broadcast / 3:34
12. Montage / 3:36
13. Lament / 3:57

The singers are:

Eva Peron -- Julie Covington

I always wondered why it says 3:17, since the track is actually only
around 1:20. There actually seem to be a lot of CDs where the listed
timings don't have anything to do with the actual timings (the Swedish
"Les Miserables" being the most obvious example, where most of the tracks
are around 40 seconds off).

Am I the only person who _likes_ the insecticide subplot?

OK, OK. I am not going to attempt to take anything away from Mr.
Diamond, by all accounts one of the great "Lite FM" singers of recorded
history. I AM, however, going to strongly object to the characterization
of Colm Wilkinson, with whom I am acquainted, as sounding like Mr.
Diamond. I almost swallowed my own tongue.

IMHO, of course...
