Three words for you: Old Man River! The greatest baritone ballad I know-- It
is a torch song from Showboat.

Porter's "So in Love" from Kiss Me Kate, or "Were Thine That Special Face."
Are you a really legit baritone?
Ravenal lies too high for most baritones, but an operatic quality voice really
kicks on "You Are Love" from Showboat.
Are you looking for unusual? If not, standards like 'I've Never Been in Love
Before," or ANYTHING of Sky's from Guys and Dolls would be good.
Kern's "All the Things You Are" from Very Warm for May.
See if you like where "I Don't Remember You," and "Sometimes a Day Goes By"
(both are Kander and Ebb) lie for you.
"Too Many Mornings" from Follies is a duet, but could work as a solo (but not
if you're too young.)
From South Pacific, "This Nearly was Mine" is not as over used as "Some
Enchanted Evening," and is just as beautiful.
"Joey, Joey, Joey," from Most HGappy Fella.
"I Wanna Be Seen With You" from Funny Girl.
Is "Shootin' Star" from the revival of 110 in the Shade published?
Both Starbuck and File have some beautiful music to sing in that score.
"A Quiet Girl" from Wonderful Town is a gem.

Good luck and God bless.

If Ever I Would Leave You - Camelot
On the Street Where You Live - My Fair Lady
Knight of the Woeful Countenance - Man of LaMancha (Bass-Bari and not a
ballad, but a great song)
Try to Remember - The Fantasticks
The Girl That I Marry - Annie Get Yor Gun
In Praise of Women - A Little Night Music (Sondhiem, but obscure)
Old Man River - Showboat
I've Never Been in Love Before - Guys and Dolls
I Won't Send You Roses (I think)- Mack and Mable

For God's own sake do not do Stars from Les Mis, or anything from Phantom -
Yeesh!

There's a big problem with asking a question like "What's a good song for a
baritone" It's better to ask "What's a good song for a young leading man type"
or "for a middle aged short character actor"

Any song can be sung by any voice type through the magic of transposition.
Many of the songs I sing I've transposed up to better suit my voice. It's much
harder to sing a song that's not written to be sung by someone like you. For
example "I'm Still Here" from Follies is a wonderful song, but if a 15-year-old
girl sings it, it makes no sense. I saw a 12-year-old sing "I Don't Know How
to Love Him" last week, and it made people very uncomfortable.

My suggestion if to find a song you like, ask yourself if it makes sense being
sung by someone of your type. And if need be, change the key.

Looking at some of the suggestions on this thread, songs I'd considered
more low-tenor or high-bass/bass than baritone. What is the range
generally accepted for a baritone piece?

That depends if you are classified as a high or low baritone. Generally, a
range from low A flat to high G is expected. Its not that different from a
Bass range but refers to the quality or timber of the voice. hope that helps!
