Latest on the NINE film

Daniel Day-Lewis may head the cast of the Rob Marshall-helmed screen
adaptation of the Maury Yeston-Arthur Kopit musical Nine. Variety
reports that the star is currently in talks to step into the role
recently vacated by an over-worked Javier Bardem, who was originally
slated to portray Italian filmmaker Guido Contini. The 1982 Broadway
musical was inspired by Federico Fellini's film "8 ½."
Academy Award-nominated screenwriter Michael Tolkin has penned the
screenplay for the movie musical. The late Oscar-winning writer and
director Anthony Minghella ("The English Patient") was brought in to
rewrite Tolkin's screenplay shortly before his death in March.
Confirmed casting for the film includes Penelope Cruz (Carla), Marion
Cotillard (Luisa), Sophia Loren (Guido's Mother), Nicole Kidman and Judi
Dench. The Weinstein Company produces the venture; Yeston and Kopit are
on board as co-executive producers.
Daniel Day-Lewis earned Academy Awards for his work in the films "There
Will Be Blood" and "My Left Foot."
Nine premiered on Broadway in 1982, and won five Tony Awards, including
Best Musical. In 2003 Broadway saw a revival reset in the early 1960s,
that would win two Tonys, including Best Revival.

I like him in a lot of his film work but he would be very very very
very very far down my short list of film actors I would consider for
thiis role.

I didn't even know they were makinga film of "Nine." I like DDL, but I
am not sure he is the right choice here...then again, I was very
skeptical of Depp as Todd and was duly impressed with his performance.
Still, I would have been thrilled to see Bardem in the role, that
seems like near perfect casting to me.
"Nine" is one of my all-time favorite shows (though I was deeply
disappointed in the revival). Anyone know who is being tapped to play
Saraghina? And what role is Kidman supposed to be playing? I'm not a
fan of hers. Love the idea of Sofia Loren as the mom and Cotillard as
Luisa, though.

I was just thinking this morning that it might actually be a good role
for Lea Delaria.

Personally, I was not terribly impressed with Banderas' performance in
the show, but what might have put me off was all the tourists who were
in the audience to ogle him instead of paying attention to the show.
He would be good BO, for sure - I wonder why he was not cast in the
film?

Wow, thank God. I think she would be a terrible choice for
Claudia...for one thing, she is way, way too old. And she looks about
as Italian as Grace Kelly...
I can't help but think there must be a role in this picture for
Catherine Zeta-Jones...maybe she would be a good Saraghina...
I wonder who will be playing Liliane LeFleur?
In any case, I sure hope they keep "The Germans at the Spa." I think
that song is really amusing, and missed it very much in the revival...

I think she should be more grotesque than sexy - as in the original
film. After all she (should be) dressed as a nun. On second thought,
Lea may not be buxom enough for the role. I think Ms Winokur would
make a good Saraghina in about 20 years.

if she can still dance I'd love to see Leslie Caron - and I would love
to see Chita do it on film. or Shirley Maclaine.

"The Germans at the Spa" is basically a homage to that glorious
tracking shot in 8 1/2 (with the Ride of the Valkyres blaring in the
background) - I don't know how you could do a similar - but different
- coup de cinema with the show tune.
But I thought the revival made a mistake cutting it. Yes, it has
little to do with the plot but you really do NEED a production number
in the first half hour. It's an awful long wait to "Folies Bergeres"
without it.
FWIW I'm also surprised Bandera was not (apparently) approached for
the film. Even without a hit in some time he's bigger BO than the
other names they've bandied about.
So long as they plan to be euro-centric (and they should if they can)
I'd love to see Heino Ferch (but then, I'd like to see Heino Ferch in
just about anything - or at least in very very little.) I don't know
if he can sing but he can do musicals.
Of course, if they can wait another decade Hugh Jackman will be
ready....

Broadway's prediction of twenty-five years ago come true. (Of course,
he's probably too old to pull it off on screen today, although I
suspect he could still knock it out of the park on stage.)

Really is a shame the film wasn't done back in the day with the OBC, or
as much of it as possible. IMHO no one can replace Raul Julia, Karen
Akers, and of course Anita Morris. Especially Miss. Morris, where so
little of her stage roles are captured on film. IIRC her "Call From the
Vatican" was banned by the CBS Tony Awards broadcast of that year for
being too risqué. Every time I watch "Aria", think of what a great
talent we lost so young.

Saraghina needs a someone who can be volopus, sexy, big and gorgeous in
that sort of bawdy Italian way. Can't see Zeta-Jones pulling it off,
well maybe if she gained 20lbs.

You need someone capable of pulling off French chantuse and dancer like
Ertha Kitt, or ZiZi Jeanmarie, both too old now.

Oh just LOVE GATS " They can have anything they chose so why do they
were Lederhosen?"
Think part of the problem with doing that number is despite it being a
seemingly light musical number, it does call for some legitimate voices.

And that was all her under there, no artificial anything; unlike many of
what are billed as "voluptuous" show girls today.

Was listening to the OBC as one was running around mid-town doing
errands/shopping on Saturday. Talk about "Germans at the Spa", the area
around 57th on the Eastside was certainly very international. *LOL*
