The cast, from what I know is as follows:

Thats all I know for now....

All true. And he forgot Melissa Manchester as the Beggar Woman.

I've been around. Well, maybe I haven't been around... but I've been nearby.

I wish he were. $75 a ticket for a staged reading. Encores and Reprise are
playing a sick joke on the public and bringing an end to actual PRODUCTIONS.
What? No David Hyde Pierce, Jane Leeves and John Mahoney? You could
cast the whole show from Frasier. :-)

****** The RATM FAQ http://www.juglans.demon.co.uk/Tim/Tim.htm ******
I strongly disagree. These concerts are rediscovering lost classics. We
wouldn't have today's musicals if the genre hadn't been developed through these
shows. By presenting these musicals, which often means tracking down and
restoring all but lost orchetrations and librettos, these series' are
preserving our musical theatre history. It's terribly important work.
Additionally, many of these shows are not considered commercially viable. So
they are not likely to be produced today. Encores reminds us just how
wonderful these shows are. Frequently, they lead to regional productions (I
bet a lot of theatres and high schools are going to be producing Babes in Arms
in coming seasons!), recordings of scores that are not fully available
otherwise, and most importantly, they remind producers that audiences still
appreciate a good old fashioned musical, and don't need to be spoon-fed
spectacle with lavish production values and no heart.
All this is accomplished with minimal financial investment. If six to ten
million dollars were required every time one of these shows were to be produced
(which would definitely happen with today's Broadway economy) most of these
shows would never be attempted. And if they were, producers would likely feel
the need to dress them up with enormous productions that would only detract
from the show itself.
I saw Babes in Arms Sunday evening, and I was completely charmed by it. Of
course it's a silly, fluffy show. But there's nothing wrong with that. Crazy
For You was just as silly, but Crazy ran on Broadway for several years (and I
think Babes even had better choreography!). My only minor complaint with this
weekend's production was that I wish they'd been able to get David Campbell to
take the straight-tones out of his singing. It was the one thing that betrayed
him as a pop singer. Otherwise he sang with perfectly legit technique and
sounded wonderful on the songs. He's also a much better actor than I was
expecting. And he was perfectly matched with Erin (wish they'd let her do ten
or twelve more reprises of "Lady is a Tramp") Dilly.
If you didn't get to see the show, you missed something special.

P.S. I was sitting right behing Al Hirshfield! Just thought I'd share.
Wait for the hiatus. One prominent rumor is that the men will all appear in
the New York production of Art...

I will point out that both Kelsey Grammer & Christine Baranski were
both in the workshop of SITPWG as the soldier & Clarisse (then became
Yvonne)...neither are strangers to Sondheim. Kelsey Grammer also sings
the theme song to Frasier.
And does anyone recall Grammer's "Side Show Bob" on THE SIMPSONS when he
did a tribute to Gilbert & Sullivan????
Alison
but I am sure you all already know this
Are you kidding? I have it on tape!!!
David
I have also heard that Ken Page is no longer in the cast and that Doogie Howser
is now playing Toby.
Not happening.
David
So producers of plays have obviously realised that big-name stars in the
cast is the way to keep people interested. Nicole Kidman, Kevin Spacey,
Richard Dreyfuss...
I wonder what drama purists think of this? Musical theatre purists seem
divided as to the merits of big stars.
I see no difference. In an ideal world, producers would be free to cast the
individuals they feel are best suited to the role. They would be able to do so
regardless of the potential box office results, because audiences would be more
interested in seeing the best possible production, regardless of the relative
fame of any cast members.
This is, of course, not a perfect world. Sometimes producers feel the need to
compromise on ability in order to get a big name that will fill the house and
make a huge profit, or at least minimize the risks of losing money.
Sometimes, however, these two options overlap. When that happens, everyone
goes home happy.

Bob's final high note is hilarious.
(And don't forget the Simspon family rendition of "Three Little
Girls from School" earlier in the episode, accompanied by the F.B.I. Light
Opera Society.)
KELSEY GRAMMER! what, what, what?
I initially read that as Malcolm Gets because he seems to be popping up
everywhere...but Kelsey Grammer?
> Mrs. Lovett.........Christine Baranski
she is perfectly suitable for the role. ah, i still adore her version of
Sherry!

I don't know where you're getting your information, but I paid $35 for my
Saturday matinee tickets to see Sweeney at the Ahmanson. They might be
nosebleed, but I prefer to see live theatre (especially with these names)
however I can, even if it is with opera glasses.
Eric
umm, isn't Johanna "supposed" to be 15 or so? and isn't Davis a bit long in
the tooth for Anthony?
Just a thought or two....
Any word of this being recorded? I'd love to hear Grammer take a crack at
Sweeney...I think he will be VERY interesting. And I love the choice of
Baranski- she's a hoot. But yes, our young lovers aren't cast quite so
young...hmmm..

I didnt know about Neil Patrick Harris. Could be true.
Ill let you know if he is there the first day of rehearsal.
J
Jim,
Congratulations on being a part of it! How terrific! Let us know how it goes!
Neil Patrick Harris sounds a bit wrong to me- could he sing it? I heard he
didn't sing Mark in Rent so well....and Toby requires a gorgeous tenor, which
Jack Noseworthy is.
Actually, I thought Neil Harris sang the role of Mark quite fine in RENT.
And regarding the role of Toby "requiring" a "gorgeous" tenor, I recently saw
the video of the show and although the Toby there was affecting, I really
wouldn't call the sound he made "gorgeous".
Besides singing in last year's S.T.A.G.E. benefit, what has Mr. Noseworthy done
to place him in such heady company? Just curious.....
Okay, poor choice of adjective there (woah- and it's the second time someone
complained- I got an email about it!)...I meant strong, I guess. Someone with
a high, sweet quality. It's not an easy part to sing and I think it requires
a pretty strong set of pipes....IMHO. Most of that score needs very strong
singers to carry it.
No, he's not making it up. Kelsey has a wonderful, almost operatic voice and
would be very good, in my humble opinion.
Geoffrey
I think it's not Ken Page but Roland Rusinek as the Beadle.
