Hi,

My dad recently purchased a demo recording LP of "Gantry" the musical
based on Elmer Gantry - it stars Rita Moreno and Robert Shaw. I know
that the musical itself opened and closed in one day in 1970. I was
unable to find any info on this record in any of the price guides.
Anyone know anything else about the record? Potential value?

thanks

I have no idea of the value... but I imagine a few people, like me for
example, are a bit envious of your dad! I think that the record company had
already printed an album cover before canceling the recording session of the
OBC. What is the demo's cover like?

Demo recordings were/are done prior to a show going into production in
order to advertise the score for potential investors. They are not
produced with the intention of public sale so, therefore, you won't
find a listing for it in any record guide price book. They do have
value within the musical theatre collectors market, however. Your
best bet would be to give a call or e-mail to Footlight Records in New
York City. I believe their website is www.footlight.com. They'd be
able to tell you what its potential value is.

There's another musical of Gantry that was done in La Jolla with music by Mel
Marvin and lyrics by Bob Satuloff, but, as that was 12 years ago, I doubt it
would have been recorded on LP (if it was recorded at all).

I saw GANTRY in previews. I think I paid something like $ 5.00 and
sat in the center orchestra. The playbill cover is a publicity photo
of Robert Shaw, no logo or Rita Moreno in sight. I have vague
memories of sorta enjoying it, and remember liking two numbers in
particular: "Someone I've Already Found" and "He's Never Too Busy".
There was a comic number for 4 men called "Foresight" which I remember
stopping the show. I also remember being dissapointed that the
Shirley Jones-'Lulu Bates' character was eliminated to one brief scene
and no song for Lulu. It was the one and only time I was in the
Adelphi-54th Street-George Abbott Theatre and I wish I had paid better
attention at the time, in my teen years. If I had been aware that
this was the place where ON THE TOWN, among others, had their NYC
premieres, I would have taken a much closer and better look.

> Adelphi-54th Street-George Abbott Theatre

Nicholas Van Hoogstraten's "Lost Broadway Theatres" is available through
Amazon

and is definitely worth having. If I recall, it has photos and information
about this "lost" theatre
