A tough call.

He's been working hard for years. And he's cute. And he sings
beautifully though not in this.

Reacting only to ones I actually got to see, and since I didn't get to
see all nominees in any category, realizing that my choices may not
be valid.

Though South Pacific is very very good indeed, I thought
SITP was overwhelming

> Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Musical

Evans and Szot also strong... but oh, the pain and
vulnerability in this performance.

>
> Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Musical

A career-defining performance, vs very good efforts from
O'Hara and Russell.

Only nominee I saw... deserving.

Also only one I saw... VERY deserving.

Hmmm... I can't choose here... both had strengths.

I was not particularly fond of the costumes in SP...
thought they missed many opportunities.

> Best Lighting Design of a Musical
> Ken Billington, Sunday in the Park with George

Breathtaking... which South Pacific could have been but
to me again missed opportunities.

> Best Sound Design of a Musical

> Scott Lehrer, South Pacific

With a nicely done to SITP

> Best Direction of a Musical

SP - again - missed opportunities.

> Best Choreography

Gosh, I hope one of the other nominees was better
than SP!

So why did this show get left out of the Best Musical category?

A good question... several thoughts -

It's not upbeat... and it's appeal is to an older demographic than
either Passing Strange or In the Heights. The music is somewhat complex
and not immediately hummable... I don't think it would look especially
appealing in a 3-minute segment on the broadcast, and especially I'll
bet that the road producers were not interested in it.

Clive Barnes's review:
http://www.nypost.com/seven/04182008/entertainment/theater/an_affair_to_remember__a_musical_of_note_106945.htm
pretty much captures my reaction to the show.

Note that it did win the Drama League....

You're right -- the Jersey Boys voters (a very large segment nowadays)
won't care for it if they even bother to see it.

Mr. Newport - 11 (42%)
Jean Coeur de Lapin - 8 (well, seven really as he was kinda wishy
