Ooohhhh... the Whitney Museum concert from 1983, right?

I was lucky enough to chat with George Hearn for a few minutes at the
stage door after Putting It Together. He told me that album was his work
that he was perhaps most proud of.

It's the revue that MTI licenses as You're Gonna Love Tomorrow. Much
more fun than Side by Side by Sondheim.

That's the one, David. I'm very excited by it. I have a long drive on
Monday and my CDS are already set, ready to go. I'm showing such
restraint...

I love his complete "Marcus Lycus." That should go back into the show.

I just finished listening to "On the Twentieth Century." I love Madeleine
Kahn, but I wish they had recorded Judy Kaye in the lead. John Cullum is
excellent and I wish that, vocally, Kevin Kline had more to do. The thing I
liked best about this recording is new tracks that were released. Very
interesting and, by far, the most intricate music I've ever heard from
Comden and Green.

And in the correct running order. (The Lp ended with the Entr'acte.) I
loved this show. I saw it twice on Broadway-- with and without Kevin
Kline. Oscar Jaffe is on my very short list of perfect roles.

While I've no doubts the very experienced lyricists Comden and Green
contributed to the songs' structures, that surprisingly complex music
was the creation of Cy Coleman.

Kaye-- so, selfishly, I was glad Kahn was recorded. She was also
nominated for a Tony. (IIRC, Hal Prince tried to pull a Dean Jones/Larry
Kert for Kaye-- but this time was turned down.)

From the liner notes by Ken Mandelbaum:

"The show got off to a good start at the box office, but the run did not
proceed without event. After understudy Judy Kay, who was playing the role
of Agnes, Lily's maid, went on for leader lady Kahn nine times, Kahn was
invited to leave the show, and she agreed. Kahn played her last performance
on April 24; she had already recorded the show on February 26. There is
little doubt that Kahn's withdrawal hurt her chances of having a career as a
Broadway musical star. But it also put Judy Kaye on the map and allowed
Kaye to demonstrate that she was a performer to be reckoned with."

But not as a non-musical star. She got a Tony for SISTERS ROSENSWEIG and
a nomination for BORN YESTERDAY (saw her in both) to go with her noms
for OTTC and IN THE BOOM BOOM ROOM. (I saw that, too.) She had left TWO
BY TWO by the time I saw it, but I did see her in the ANYONE CAN WHISTLE
concert.

I always got the feeling that she screwed up on OTTC, was forgiven by
the community and came back.

In the FORBIDDEN BROADWAY book Gerard A. recalls a conversaion with Kahn
in which, he realized later, she was hinting at a job in his show.
