ST:TNG UK Episode List (in UK airing order)
-------------------------------------------
The episode length is calculated using my VCR's elapsed linear timer from the
start of the episode to the appearance of the Paramount logo at the end. All
episodes are broadcast at 6.00pm on Wednesdays on BBC 2 (note: no adverts in
the original broadcast of course) unless otherwise specified. The tape
numbering refers to 4-hour PAL SP VHS video tapes and the rating is a highly
subjective one out of 10.
The "US #" column indicates the US airing order (repeats, including the US
reshowing of "Encounter At Farpoint" as 2 separate episodes, do not count) of
the episodes, courtesy of Michael L. Brown and Timothy W. Lynch's excellent
US ST:TNG Episode Guide, available via anonymous FTP from ftp.coe.montana.edu
in the directory /pub/STARTREK/st-tng.

[Season 1 notes: The only very heavily censored episode was "Conspiracy" - the
phasering at the end was shown, but not the creature's transformation from
human to alien form and subsequent explosion - making the scene pointless !
Why phaser something and not show what happened to it ? "Shades Of Gray", the
cheap flashback episode at the end of Season 2, was NOT censored and the
transformed creature WAS shown in the final set of flashbacks !]

brutally censored by the BBC. "Pen Pals" remains the only ST:TNG episode to

delayed because of an obscure live tennis match.]

in their infinite wisdom, to buy the whole of Season 4 and then only to show
"Best Of Both Worlds II" before embarking on an indefinite postponement of
ST:TNG. Yes, that's right - after Wednesday 6th May 1992, ST:TNG will no
longer be aired on British TV screens for an as yet undetermined period.]
Some ST:TNG statistics
----------------------
Most consecutive weeks in a row: 24 (#14-#37. 9th Jan-19th Jun 1991)
Broadcasting weeks skipped so far: 12 (Longest break: 2 weeks, 4 times)
Episodes not broadcast at 6.00pm: 4 (Range: 5.30pm to 6.50pm)
Episodes banned: 1 ("The High Ground")
Key:
* = Shorter playing time due to a different NTSC->PAL conversion process
resulting in a 4% time loss. Sharp-eared listeners will be able to detect
a slight increase in the pitch of the voices due to the soundtrack also
being speeded up to match the picture.
? = Exact episode details unconfirmed at the time of writing. Where possible,
substitute information has been utilised from the US ST:TNG Episode Guide.
Trivia about the UK broadcasting of ST:TNG:
* Seasons 1,2 and 3 were broadcast in mono, despite the BBC's ability to trans-
mit them in NICAM stereo. The reason ? The BBC bought them in mono originally
and "it would be too expensive" to repurchase them in stereo. Obviously the
BBC have never heard of this novel concept of "forward planning" - they knew
that NICAM stereo was coming into service a LONG time ago.
* No episode of ST:TNG has *ever* been repeated in the UK (probably the BBC
crying poverty over the repeat fees this time). Now you know why I archive
all the transmissions !
* Most episodes have been edited to varying degrees of what I would prefer to
call censorship. Usually this is because of some supposedly "violent" scene
which the BBC can't POSSIBLY allow to be broadcast between 6.00pm and 6.50pm
for fear of creating a horde of psychopathic maniacs roaming the streets of
this fair land.
* "The High Ground", an episode involving terrorism (including the planting of
a bomb on the Enterprise warp engines), was, according to the BBC, too close
to the Northern Ireland situation and hence must be kept from the population
of Great Britain, lest they rig up dimensional-shifting transport devices out
of two washing-up bottles and some sticky tape and use them to plant a
thermonuclear device on the engine of Concorde in mid-flight. Oh, I ended up
buying the UK CIC video release of "The Hunted"/"The High Ground" episodes
to fill the gap in my collection.
* ST:TNG consistently has viewing figures good enough to make it one of the Top
3 programmes broadcast by BBC 2. It begs the obvious question: WHY is it
broadcast at 6.00pm on a Wednesday, when most of its viewers are on their way
back from work ? I'd like a pose a question to US readers: would YOU put up
with the premiere broadcast of an ST:TNG episode on a Wednesday at 6.00pm -
with no hope of a repeat of that episode in the next 3 years either ?
* The BBC are said to be "interested" in purchasing "Star Trek : Deep Space
Nine" when it becomes available, but don't hold your breath - we could be
talking 1995 before ST:DSN hits UK screens !
* One unconfirmed rumour has it that Sky One satellite channel *may* buy the
rights to ST:TNG (the first three seasons ?) and start showing them sometime
in 1993. Unfortunately, Sky One shows adverts, so this would put a real
strain on archiving the episodes without the adverts.
* ST:TNG is now off the air on the UK, with no indication as to when it is
coming back. Write to the BBC and complain - they've bought Season 4, so
why on earth (or space ?) can't they show it ?
