Sorry, but we are talking about CHARACTERS not actors. Gates McFadden is
a good actress. Now, just because she was often given bad storylines as Dr.
Crusher to work with doesn't mean that she didn't make the grade.
In fact, if we have to compare actors, I'd say that Gates McFadden and
Marina Sirtis are a lot more talented than DeForest Kelley.

I liked Pulaski, but I think that to the masses, the loss of Crusher

Another vote for Pulaski! I thought her character very intriguing,
even if unlikeable at times, and thought she could add a lot to the
show. And the acress was great! McFadden's acting was fine, IMHO,
but the character had potential that was never developed by the
writers. Same could be said for most of the characters on TNG,
and probably would have happened to Pulaski had she stayed as well.
Somebody said she played Miranda in TOS as well? Loved her in
that part too! Anybody know anything else she's been in? For that
matter, what her name is? I don't remember. BTW I agree that
DForest's Bones was a hard act to follow. I think I placed him as

I don't think it's right to slag off Gate's McFadden as an actress.
Just because she really hadn't got alot to do in comparison with other
characters and was often constricted in her role of the good doing doctor.
Beverly Crusher had an entirely different approch to either Bones or Kate
Pulaski but that was a production decesion and it not good for fans to be
condemning Gates as an actress just cos you may not have liked her
character.
Just for the record, I have seen Gates McFadden in other things and she
has done a fine job there as well.

Although I must say I object to this poll on philosophical

Indeed...
As an Ausie, I saw The Hunt For Red October (again) but for the first
time since I've taken an interest in ST. From just one line I recognised
her (it was the only line she had!). Maybe I'd better cut back on Trek.
Did anyone else spot her?
And on a similar thread, can anyone think of other (cameo) roles played
by others of the Trek cast? I've seen Picard appear in Robin Hood:Men in
Tights (funniest monie in a while) in the part played by Sean Connery in
Prince of Thieves. Is this another dig like the line "Because, unlike
some other Robin Hoods, *I* can speak with a *real* English accent!" (I
thought that was one of the best lines in the movie).

I am surprised no-one remembers....
Patrick Stewart was also in the movie 'Dune', with a very small part.
That was before TNG of course.
Probably
+
+I don't think it's right to slag off Gate's McFadden as an actress.
+Just because she really hadn't got alot to do in comparison with other
+characters and was often constricted in her role of the good doing doctor.
+Beverly Crusher had an entirely different approch to either Bones or Kate
+Pulaski but that was a production decesion and it not good for fans to be
+condemning Gates as an actress just cos you may not have liked her
+character.
Lets face it, being stuck with the role of unspeakably liberal doctor
with a pronounced chest is not the acting role of the century. IMO she was
not amongst the worst characters on ST:TNG but did feature in rather poor
'Sub Rosa'.
The worst character on any ST series for my money has to be Dax. Why ?
1. She doesn't or can't act
2. Given a character with endless possibilities (multiple lifetimes) Dax
is dull and lifeless
3. I don't find her attractive
Nuff said.
Be seeing you.

Patrick Stuart also in BBC production of "I, Claudius".
Armin Shimmerman (Quark) appeared as an alien in an episode of 'Alien Nation'.
George from 'Alien Nation' (Eric Pierpoint) also appearred in TNG. Which
episode?
Grant.

Deep down, he's really quite a shallow guy.

: The worst character on any ST series for my money has to be Dax. Why ?
: 1. She doesn't or can't act
She hasn't been given many opportunities.
She has the one character on the show that doesn't have an
antagonist/conflict/buddy...
For example,
Odo and Quark; Bashir and Garak (and sometimes O'Brien); Sisko and Kira;
Jake and Nog...
: 2. Given a character with endless possibilities (multiple lifetimes) Dax

I always thought of Dax being more detached than the others-- more of a
"been there, done that" kind of character. See under point 1 as well.
: 3. I don't find her attractive
I do.

> The worst character on any ST series for my money has to be Dax. Why ?

Doesn't act? Ye gods. She does a *very* good job of being *old*.
Everything about her screams "I am old." It's all very very subtle,
and the result does make her appear unnaturally calm... this is
*exactly* the desired 'acting'.
> 2. Given a character with endless possibilities (multiple lifetimes) Dax
> is dull and lifeless
She isn't not at all dull... And she's not lifeless. Just
very very abnormally calm. The contrast between her and Kira
is very very brilliant.
Dax is calm, level headed at *all* times, including under fire.
Exactly what you'd expect of someone several hundred years
old, who's been in conditions ranging from utter luxury to
total war.
Kira, on the other hand, is youth at it's finest, fiery,
feisty, flashes of anger, and through it all, a certain
arrogance mixed with uncertainty that youth carries.
The contrast is pretty great. :)
> 3. I don't find her attractive
You don't? Oh well. :) Mm... personally, I find her
very attractive, mainly because of her projection of
age. Mind you, I find Kira just as attractive, 'cos
she's as feisty as all hell... :) and those nose
ridges... Mmm. :)

1. Dr. Pulanski (She was a bitch and treated Data like shit!)
2. Weasly Cruncher (I hate Him so Much I misspelt his name!)
3. Ben Sisko (He makes Spock look like a comedian)
4. Dr. Bashir (The Wesley Chrusher of DS9)
5. Kira (Very Perdictable)

To continue the tangent... Stewart also appears in 'Excalibur.'

HEAR HEAR! I second that one!!!
(But what would make the deckplates rattle for him? No warp drive...or,
at least, not at first. :-) I can picture it now...the Spherical
Station meets the Borg Cube.)
Me too. The obvious joke, but when it came out I was ROTFL. Go Cary Elwes!
Anyone remember his incredibly cool role a Westley/Dread Pirate Roberts in
The Princess Bride?

I'll say...
: Do not forget that Patrick Stewart was also in Excalibur...that great
: movie about King Arthur, The Lady in the Lake, and Excalibur itself...
AND... he, along with a whole cast of hold-on-a-minute-weren't-theys,
appears in the David Lynch Film Dune. Stewart plays Gurney Halleck. Dean
Stockwell (Al from Quantum Leap) is Doctor Yueh. Kyle Maclachlan is Paul
Atreides. Max Von Syndow is Liet Kynes. Sean Young is Chani. Sting is Feyd
Rautha Harkonnen. Freddie Jones is Thufir Hawat. The list goes on...
