after historical and famous people and places on Earth, here're a few I can
think of offhand:

The Challenger disaster occured on 28th January 1986, to be
precise. Sorry if many others have already told you this.

I also noticed that this registry number would have placed that
ship in between the original Enterprise and the Excelsior.

The USS Agamemnon has already been used, hasn't it? USS Cortez
and USS Trafalgar also have a ring of familiraity about them.
I could look it up in the ST Encyclopedia, but I don't have it
on me at the moment.

I've also been through this list and -- not quite tearing it to
pieces, but dissecting it definitely -- rated the possibilities
of these names. Bear in mind that I'm writing from Australia,
and may not know the more US-specific of these references.

USS: Rating:
Vladimir Lenin Definitely -- maybe just USS Lenin
though.
Sitting Bull Possibly.
Bunker Hill A bit too US-specific.
Winchester How many other ships are there
named after weapons?
R.E.M. Are you serious? :-)
Tom Sawyer Good possibility.
Tutankhamen Another good possibity.
Carl Hiassen Who is this person?
Wake Forest Where is this place?
Roddenberry Definitely not -- good sentiment,
but *WAY* too obvious.
Dave Barry Who is this?
Red Ryder Or this?
Hokkaido Very good chance, bearing in mind
that some Japanese islands have
already been used as ship names.
Vivaldi Another good chance, given the
seeming popularity of classical
music among the Ent-D crew.
Doonesbury Mr. Swick mentioned famous *people*,
didn't he? Somehow, I don't think
a comic strip counts.
Moby Dick I can see the hailing now -- "This
is Captain Ahab of the USS Moby
Dick." I don't think so.
Hadrian Good chance.
John Kennedy Another good chance, possibly as
USS John F. Kennedy.
Leonard Nimoy *WAY* too obvious.
George Lucas As is this.
Marcellus Wallace Who is this?
Sternbach Too obvious.
Arthur C. Clarke Definitely -- after all, the whole
personnel of Starfleet are all
strangers in strange lands, aren't
they? :-)
Dean Cain Are you serious? :-)
Microsoft Famous *people*, wasn't it? I don't
think companies count either.
Steve Dallas Who is this?
Nirvana Extremely doubtful, but possible if
you start using Heaven or
Sha-Ka-Ree as well.
Fonzie You *must* be joking! :-)
Thomas Edison Good possibility.
Jesse James Another good possibility.
Tombstone Ditto.
Patrick Stewart *WAY* too obvious.
Kryptonite We're not Superman, are we? :-)
Bing Crosby I don't think so.
Indiana Jones Ditto.
Skywalker Maybe.

Ahh, but what about ships like the Enterprise which are named for concepts.
Here are some other ships named after the worthwhile quailities embodied by
Starfleet :

USS Audacious
USS Gumption
USS Suicidal Insanity
USS Conservatism
USS Propriety
USS Infidelity
USS Xenophobe
USS Obsession
USS Dalmation
USS Barbara Walters (To boldly probe where no one has probed before.....)

I like it. (After all, there was already a Melbourne.)
Also, remember CV-17?

I hope he isn't....

Fictional (sort of) character, trouble maker. Really good.

Boy king who's grave didn't get robbed until the 1920s. What did he ever
do? (besides dancin' by the Nile, ate a crocodile, etc etc.)

No place important. (DRW: Virginia Tech '85)

US humorist. I am not making this up.

It's not a traditional Japanese ship name though. There are MANY better
choices for Japanese names.

I'm a Vivaldi fan, but somehow, it just doesn't sound right for a
Starship.

NO NO NO. MONTY PYTHON SAYS NO.

Absolutely not.

Maybe.....

A bank robber? but then, considering some of the politicians that ship get
named after......

I would point out an ommission on behalf of a Canadian lobby group (of
whom I have heard but of which I am not part). Their arguement is that
since the founding principles of the Federation are similar to those of
the UN, there should be a ship named after Lestor B. Pearson, Canadian
Prime Minister in the 50s who was very influential in the early setup of
the UN. Hence the USS Pearson, NCC1958 (I'm sure I got the date wrong.
Feel free to correct me.)

Temeraire
Ark Royal
Victorious
Illustrious

Salamis
Kilkis
Lemnos
Bonaventure
Almirante Latorre
Moreno
Rividavia
Vittorio Veneto

Or, if you don't mind getting geographical.... (remember, they had no
qualms about the Yamato)

New Jersey (NCC-6216)
Missouri (NCC-6300)
Wisconsin
Washington
North Carolina
South Dakota
Massachusetts
Oklahoma

Here's some other ideas for ship names that would show Canadian
references.

There is a Chyenne class, so how about Native Indian tribes from
Canada, such as the Huron, Haida, Seneca, etc.

Or our last aircraft carrier, the Bonaventure.

Or the penultimate reference, the USS MacKenzie. No, not the Prime
Minister of long ago, but Bob and Doug!

Hailing frequencies open, eh! ;-)

This was just a list of ship names I thought it might be kind of
fun to see stencilled on a ship's hull in Star Trek. By all means, feel
free to add to this list. We could keep the thread going, and see how
many of these names might actually turn up on Star Trek at some future
date. I think there're probably thousands of possible names out there.
Remember to always quote the top list, for reference as to what names
have already been used, and continue to quote new lists as they are
posted. Maybe we can eventually get a Ships' Names FAQ put together.

PEACE!!!

Hey, c'mon. Didn't you see all those good Brit names I used earlier?
The reason I had mostly US names in the geographical section was that
the USN uses geographical names for its ships more than the RN does.
The above listed state names were all used on at least one famous US
battleship.

>How about:
>

Manchester and London would be fine.

I would suggest the following as well:

Belfast
Dorsetshire
Devonshire
Suffolk
Berwick
Sheffield (for both the lost Type 42, and the original "Old Shiny")

All of these were famous RN cruisers in WWII.

Actually, Canada would be a good name too. A very good battleship in WWI
bore that name honorably.

Someone mentioned using the names of Canadian Indian tribes. Sounds like
a fine idea to me. Those names have been used on many ships.

And while we're on the subject of potential RN type names for Starfleet
how 'bout

Courageous
Furious
Glorious

Great names. (even if the last ships to use them weren't so successful)

Annother thought that struck me, how about calling all Defiant class
warships after continents:
Europe
Asia
Africa
North America
South America
Australia (or even Oceania)
Antarctica
(Atlantis?)
And just perhaps India as well.
And Oceans and Seas:
Atlantic
Pacific
