John Hoyt, the character actor who played Dr. Phillip "Bones" Boyce in
the first pilot for Star Trek (The Menagerie) died at his home in Santa Cruz
on September 15. He was 86 years old.

His role was the doctor who was also a bartender to Captain
Christopher Pike. He was introduced to the audience as he removed ice
from his "little black bag" and asked Pike "Who wants a warm martini?"
A great many of these characteristics were later transferred to
DeForest Kelly's role as Dr. Leonard "Bones" McCoy.

Mr. Hoyt is survived by his wife Dorothy and his children.
