Just saw a TNG re-run where Doctor Beverly fell in love with a Trill ambassador
named Odan. I believe that this was the introduction of the Trill race on TNG.
On this episode, Odan, the Trill guy, said that he couldn't use the transporter
because it would injure or damage the symbiont. On DS9, however, Dax is often
transported from here to there. Can someone please explain?
I know this might belong in the tech section, but oh well.

Guten Tag, alle!
Also the symbiant totally takes over the host, rather than the joining we see
in Dax's species. My (sad Trekker attempting to explain away YATI) explanation
is that evolution on the Trill planet took two different directions at some
point - the Odan Trills were the evolutionary stage at that time, and the
species (both host and symbiant) split into two - one pair of subspecies not
evolving any further, the other pair evolving into Dax's species

Maybe this is another ST inconsistency. The real reason that the Trill
changed (and yes IMHO they are the same species) is because of Terry
Farrell. The makeup guys wanted to keep her lovely (no sarcasm!) face
prosthetic (sp?) free. Instead of the ridges on Odan, they gave her
unobtrusive spots (which have become the object of sexual jokes on the
series).
Another thing: the transporter. In "The Host," the story required the
host to die as part of the story line, so a quick transport would have
ruined the story. In DS9, Jadzia Dax is a Starfleet officer. She has to
use the transporters. The only explanation I have is this:
The Federation, at Trill request, started experimenting with
transporters to find a way to transport Trill hosts and symbionts
safely. As of DS9, they are successful at modifying all Federation
transporters.
I hope this helps. Thank you.

But I don't buy that seperate evolution. Between TOS and TNG/DS9, we're
talking about only 70 years. There can't be that much difference in that
amount of time. I believe that, as usual, the writers and make-up artists
forgot to follow through on their alien races from series to series.

Sheesh!! My explanation is that the writers just did it differently. C'mon,
folks, it's a fictional TV show.

Yes, I wasn't being *entirely* serious
