Forgive my ignorance, but what is the correct spelling
(in English!) of the Klingon word, rendered inaccurately
but perhaps phonetically, as `Kplah!)
Many thanks

The proper spelling is Qapla'.

Oh no it isn't! Phonetically, perhaps.

Qapla'

Well now, I have received E-Mail about this one so I want to know what
point of reference everyone has for this one, single, stupid, word!!

I say Q'plah. I got from a copy of the script for the episode "Rightful
Heir" that was given to me from a co-worker (and I don't like adding this
part, because it sounds unbelievable) who is the girlfriend of Michael
Dorn's cousin.

Please, either a REAL Klingon or someone who has standing in the Star Trek
creation circles settle this.

Speaking of Klingon words, does anyone know how to spell "toebah"?
(as in "YOU INCOMPETENT TOEBAH!!!" or "YOU DISHONORABLE TOEBAH!!!"
from "the chase")

Funny, I always just pronounced it Kerplah! and assumed that the
characters had to be written in blood on a piece of stone to truly
capture the grammar. Once an alphabet is published, the poetry should
be quite revolting.

I looked it up in the KLINGON Dictionary and it spells the word
QAPLA'
Hope that helps,
Rob

Yes I keep it on my desk, I never know when I need to lookup a few
colorful adj.

No it doesn't. It's spelled "Qapla'". Written klingon is case sensitive. I
don't believe it would make any difference in this case but there is a big
difference in some other. 'Q' and 'q' as an example.

And now a question: What is the phonetic meaning of " '' ". Can't remember
any examples off hand, but some words have this ending. I don't think that
any of the examples from the "Conversational Klingon" cassette use these
words.

Finally, is there enough interrest to create a newsgroup dedicated to the
klingon language?

The ' represents a glottal stop, a closing of the throat to cut off the air
and the sound.

For example, Qapla' is pronounced "ka-pla" with a quick choking off of the
final vowel by the glottal stop, not "ka-plaaah" with the last vowel drawn
out and sort of dying off at the end, like it might in English (which has no
phonemic glottal stop).

Yes, I know, I know. But that wasn't what I asked abuot. I may be repeating
myself now but; What is the phonetic meaning of ''. Not '.

Enquiring minds want to know.

Er, two glottal stops?

No, really. I think that's what '' means. When you release the first
glottal stop, a small amount of bottled up air rushes out of the throat
making sort of a little "uh" sound. If you clamp the throat down on that
you make the second glottal stop.

It's hard, but I'm doing it now. It's OK; my office mates know I'm strange.

Sorry for the initial misunderstanding! :-)

Why not look it up in the dictionary? The English/Kingon dictionary that is.
There was one published a few years back that is official (it was used in ST 6).
