Early in the series it was revealed that Wesley's father never really
died. They were only speaking figuratively of the "death" of Wesley's
father, Anakin Picard, when he gave up the Prime Directive and began
interfering with primitive planets' economies by endorsing some of their
vehicle manufacturers (episode 6, "Paramount Strikes Back").
In episode 7, "The Return of the Borg," Wesley showed that he could
resist the temptation of commercialism, and to prove his devotion to
his dad, he had Q create a soldier to impale him through his back so
he too could have an artificial heart. Picard was so moved that he
abandoned his "Locutus" alias and promoted Wesley from "child" to "boy."
Hope that clears up some things.
I can't remeber exactly which episode it appeared in (but I recall it
was near the time when Wesley FINALLY left the big E, to the delight
of many TNG fans) but I do remember that the death of Wesley's father
was explained in fair detail. This is what I remember about it:
After (or maybe during) that ill-fated ferengi encounter by Picard's
former ship (the STARGAZER), Picard sent several men outside to attempt
EVA repairs to a crucial section of the ship (prob. the Warp Drive
Nacelles?). Things started to go wrong (I believe that the STARGAZER
came under attack) while Picard's men were outside. I believe his
delay concerned the activation of the defense fields around the
STARGAZER. Anyways, his delay put the STARGAZER in jeopardy but they
did manage to get most of the EVA team inside. However, Picard had to
act and make a very difficult decision fast - either save the ship or
save Mr.Crusher. Obviously, he chose the former course of action,
stranding Crusher outside and killing him when either the force fields
were activated or the engines were turned on.
Sorry if this seems a bit vague but I am trying to remember an episode
I haven't seen in about a year. Interestingly, I believe this
disclosure was to Wesley directly (by Picard) during their solo flight
to a starbase in a shuttle craft.
Can anyone else recall this episode? I`ll check my VCR tapes to find
this passage on the weekend.

I don't know where you got that story from, but it's not from any
episode of the show.

No. That flight took place in "The Samaritan Snare", and nothing was
said about either the Stargazer or Jack Crusher. Captain Picard told
Wesley how he came to have his heart replaced the first time.

There is no such episode; it doesn't exist.

It's from the hardcover novel "Reunion". Completely noncanon, of course...
I'll accept this story for JC's death until Paramount says otherwise.

Right -- and this was alluded to when Wesley was trying to get into the
Academy and the last part of the testing was a simulation which required
the applicant to face his worst fear. Wesley's was about making a decision
about a person's life vs. the ship or the greater good of all involved. He
couldn't save them all.. and this was tied into his feelings about his
father's death..

Ahem. Somehow I don't think this works with what Paramount has already given
us. In 'Violations', Beverly's memory is of when Picard brought Jack's *body*
home (and, unless I'm mistaken, Picard commented in 'Encounter at Farpoint' to
Wesley that he had done just that). I think that if Jack Crusher were killed
outside the ship by the shields or warp engines being activated there would
not have been a body, unless they have an S.O.P. for regenerating the dead
body on the transporter pad so they have something to take home... :}
While I enjoy the books at times, I think that they should have waited until
TNG was no longer being produced before allowing books. With TOS, the books
came along later, and didn't have to compete with the series for explaining
events. With TNG books you've got people filling in the gaps and dropping in
references while the series is still active - one reason that most people don't
consider the books to be canon.

How's WashU this spring? <Grin>
The book Reunion explains all this. Good story. If it is out in paperback
yet, I could always depend on Schnucks to have the latest Star Trek story.

The story I recounted on my last message is actually a theme/story
line from the original series (Court Martial) when Kirk is on trial
for apparently killing one of his crew while he was outside making
repairs.

Yeah, non-canon but a good story, huh?

**************** To boldly code what no one has coded before! ****************
No, no, no -- Jack was sent out on EVA to repair the AE-35
unit which the computer predicted would fail within 72 hours. While
Jack was outside the ship, the entire crew was knocked unconscious.
Then when Jack was done with the repairs, he couldn't get back in.
"Open the shuttle bay doors, computer," he kept repeating, but the
computer responded (in Majel Barrett's voice) "I'm afraid I can't do
that, Jack."
He finally got in through an emergency hatch and turned off the
computer. He was then taken to some plane of higher consciousness in
a hotel room that was never really explained -- which is why Wesley
had such a hard time understanding what happened, I suppose.
I'll never forget that scene in which we hear Majel Barrett
singing "Daisy" in her bass register, and that cool scene in which
Picard goes jogging in that round room.
They should have known something was wrong when the computer
said the universe was a spheroid region 35 kilometers in diameter.
Classic.
