I was watching the episode of ST:TNG where Doctor Crusher falls in love
with "Odan" the Trill Ambassador and then he -- the symbiont -- is placed
inside of Cmdr. Riker. In this episode, the Trill race had Y-shaped ridges
on their heads and no "tattoos" that run down the side of their heads like
Dax and other Trill do on DS9.
Are there *TWO* races on the Trill homeworld? Or is there another planet
of Trill who live in a separate society like the Vulcans and Romulans? Can
someone clear this up or has this been addressed somewhere?
Just like THE MAJOR KLINGON MISTAKE. The Old Series Klingons look much
different then the TNG/etc Klingons. Maybe there are two races of Klingons.
Either that or they (the producers/etc) just decided to make them look
different because they felt like it and decided to forget continuity.

There is a DS9 episode in which the crew Sisko, Kira, Dax, Bashir go
back to Kirk's time. Worf and Odo were sitting in a bar and there
were Klingons there too. Odo mentioned how different they looked and
Worf replied that there was an outbreak of a Genetic disease on the
Klingon homeworld,
I don't know what that episode was.
Trials and Tribblations probably, but that's not what happened. Odo
asked about the Klingons and Worf replied "We do not like to talk about
it." Nothing more that I remember.

If you had an actress as stunningly beautiful as Terry Farrell, would you cover
her face in stucko?
Me neither.
I'd rather lose the continuity.

LOL, John -- good one! I believe that was the real reasoning. They
didn't want to mar Terry's lovely face with all that prosthetic
paraphernalia, so they altered the appearance of the Trill species.

Actually, I believe Terry was allergic to the "stucco" and so they came up
with the spots!

The original Cardassians who first appeared on TNG did not have the grayish
skin - they had normal Earth-Caucasian skin tone. I'm not sure, but I think
their hair was brown and they had facial hair.
The original Bajorans had bumps in the forehead in addition to the ridges on
the nose.
The original Romulans looked exactly like Vulcans.
Besides the obvious differences between the Klingons on TOS and TNG, DS9 &
Vgr, Klingons in the movies have had far less junk going on on their heads
than the TV Klingons.
They did not like the way Terry Farrell (sp?) looked in the original
Trill make-up design. I believe you can see the test footage on the
making of DS9 video.
The logical solution is that Odan was simply a different humanoid race
that may or may not be indigenous to Trill.

Which is exactly the line of thinking that infuriates many fans.
Continuity gets thrown to the wind for vanity's sake? The Trill problem
can be rationalized easily, but knowing how the decision was made
doesn't please me. I kind of thought Star Trek was *supposed* to be a
bit beyond worrying about simple looks (but then there's 7 of 9....)
Not entirely. We have seen a broad range of Klingon foreheads in the
movies, ranging from the huge foreheads in TMP, to General Chang's
almost complete lack of a forehead ridge in ST6.
wheres Tinky Winky and Dipsy??
and NooNoo, for that matter!

Or that there are a number of races who are compatable with Trill symbionts.
I have no problem thinking up reasonable ways to explain this without screwing
up continuity.

It was Trials and Tribs, and I remember:-)
The others ask Worf why the early Klingons look different, and they ask "was it
a viral mutation? Genetic engineering? (etc)"
Worf answers "we do not discuss it with outsiders."
A *wonderful* way to acknowlege and deal with the continuity error. I don't
think they could have done better.:-D I loved it.

Tinky Winky and Dipsy are too intellectually advanced for Star Trek. Only
LaLa & Po are silly enough to watch.
well, what do TW & D watch??
and why do u say the boys are too advanced, but the *girls* are silly
enuff??
and u still didnt tell me where NooNoo was.

theyre older? i never knew that.....sure, they looked bigger, but i thought
that was because of the steroids Tinks got in his lil purse...
and thats crap!! NooNoo can suck down LaaLaa's ball!!!
btw, if anyones got the videos "Here Come The Teletubbies" and "Dance with

and do u think Dipsys trying to make up for something with the shape of
that thing on his head? hmmm
Also, the slug itself was larger and more vicious-looking, plus it clawed
its own way into the host body whereas Dax seems to be more passive and
has to be placed into Jadzia or Verad by hand in "Invasive Procedures".

It hasn't been directly addressed, nor have the ridgeheads been seen again.
So it's pick and choose time:
1) Ignore this as a typical Trek inconsistency
2) Say that there are two or more races that can act as Trill hosts.
Perhaps there are also two ore more races of Trill symbionts?
3) Say that Odan's host had facial surgery performed on him, as did
the follow-up female host
If you placidly choose #1, aren't you reading the wrong newsgroups? We
are here to fight mercilessly about these things as if they were real!
If you choose #2, you have to explain why we never again see the ridgeheads.
Perhaps they were an (illegal?) experiment of integrating the symbionts
with a new type of hosts, and are only allowed to exist on some distant
Trill colony world, as you speculate? That would also explain why Odan
was so secretive about his true nature. It sounds a bit convoluted, though.
If you choose #3, you have the widest range of options.
-perhaps Odan just liked ridges more than spots, and insisted that his
every host have them?
-perhaps there was a religious significance to his chosen appearance?
-perhaps Odan wore a disguise to conceal his true form? Perhaps to
hide the Trill secret, or a personal secret?
-perhaps Odan wore a disguise to impersonate someone? For example, he
might have been involved in some negotiations that required him to
look like the inhabitants of planet X, and when he got called to
do the other negotiations aboard the E-D, he didn't bother to remove
the disguise?
-etc. etc.
Just tailor the story to your liking. Paramount is unlikely to ever
return to it anyway.
Timo Saloniemi
Most of these had no effect on any of the plotlines, so they never
bothered me.
However, the similarity of Romulans and Vulcans was actually *the* key
plot point in the ST:TOS episode in which Romulans were introduced, so I
found the decision to make Romulans look non-Vulcan incomprehnsible.
And they looked better in the old days, too.
Anybody remember when Romulans were the "honorable enemy" and the
Klingons were just smeaky and rotten? They seem to have switched
places.
As ever,

But of course - Tinky Winky's, Dipsy's, LaaLaa's & Po's pronunciation,
vocabulary & grammar correspond to size. The bigger the tubby, the better
the whatever. It can only be explained by age.

Of course not. Each is duly proud of his or hers unique configuration
including shape & color.

nope!! they throw it around, and NooNoo catches it and sucks it

why do all the tubbies have blankets that dont cover their feet?
Same with the Bajoran's for that matter. When Ensign Ro was first
introduced, the nose ridge began on the bridge of the nose, moved upward
and extended to the left and right over the eyes. Now, it's just on the
bridge of the nose.
What about the Klingon's, too? (I know, Worf says his people don't talk
about it - it's a societal shame to them.)

True. But there are several Bajorans on DS9 who still have (or had) this
"old nose ridge" (see the two Bajorans who work in the "treasury"<sp?> where
Vash locks her treasures from her journeys with Q - Episode: "q-less", 1st
season of DS9) !!!
