Hey, it may not be major categories, but it's a start. The Star Trek
family is now getting Emmy nominations. Not bad, considering how
little respect Sci-fi has received from TPTB in television in the
past.

We're more than jus the money-making pot, ya know.

It's really kind of neat to see the nominations (and this from someone
who as a child saw the original ST on network). "The times they are
a'changing." If you want to check out the nods, go to:

Enjoy! I know I did.

Here is my prediction and boy is it a pessimistic one.

Voyager will win one. <for which it doesn't deserve>
and DS9 will win ZERO. <and it deserves to win at least 3>

Voyager is more popular....
and its more "Network"
and Networks get more notice than any syndication .. especially in the
Emmys.

You know, you make this sound like no Trek ever got an Emmy nomination before
this year.

TNG got a total of 56 Emmy nominations, including one for Best Drama in 1994.
They won 17, all in the technical areas.

DS9 has also gotten Emmy nominations and has won numerous ones during its time,
too.

As for nominations in major categories, I believe we'll never see Trek
nominated in them. If Patrick Stewart couldnt' get a nomination in seven years
of TNG, it's not gonna happen now. Trek has three things against it (IMO):
science fiction, syndication, and the fact that it is Trek and no one but us
Trekkers take it seriously.

BAH!! Trek's been getting nominations in areas like costuming, make-up, hair,
etc for years now. I'm sure this year is no different. How the Emmy voters
could let a powerful episode like DS9's "Far Beyond the Stars" go by without a
signle writing or acting nomination is Far Beyond Me. Avery Brooks not only
appeared in every scene (giving a riveting performance) but also directed the
show. Of course, other DS9 masterpieces from years past, such as "Duet," "Past
Tense," "The Vistior," "Rejoined" and "Children of Time" have all been ignored
as well.

TNG didn't get a nomination for Best Drama until its final season, and Patrick
Stewart *never* got a nomination for Best Actor (He finally did this year, most
deservedly, for "Moby Dick"). Things haven't changed and aren't going to
either. "The X-Files" keeps getting nominations each year, despite a
horrendous drop in quality these past two years for a once great show, mostly
because it's the flavor of the moment and because it's not strictly a sci-fi
show. The fact that it's on a netowrk and not syndicated probably helps too.

If you saw TOS in its original run you should know that Nimoy was nominated for
Best Actor all three years TOS was on (He never won). That's a better shake
than any of the modern Trek shows have gotten. If DS9 can get back to the
level they were before the end of this past season and gets some nominations in
the acting and writing areas, *then* I'll be satisfied.

Not true at all. DS9 has consistently beaten VOY in the ratings the entire
time both shows have been on, except for when VOY first premiered (Just like
the first few weeks DS9 was on it beat TNG). Between that and the general
acclaim DS9 has gotten over VOY, there's no way to say VOY is more popular.
Paramount gives it more promotion and merchandising, simply because that show
is the centerpiece of their sad little network.

This is true. I think it's a big reason why "The X-Files" continues to rake in
the nominations, even the show has been a shadow of its former self the past
two years. The show was great when it started and no one was watching (Didn't
get the nominations then) and through word of mouth built-up a large following.
Now it's the "hip" show that you have to watch in order to be cool (I know
plenty of people watch it and don't understand it but don't watch Trek at
all), even though it's mostly sucked rocks lately.

The fact that's its popular and on a network makes all the difference to the
Emmy people. DS9 is popular, slugging it out with Xena for first-run
syndication supremacy week after week and often winning this past year, but not
on the level of "X-Files." DS9 took something of a diup in quality this past
year also, but I still think it's a better show than "X-Files" right now.
