When I was a kid I half read a science fiction book that involved the main
character fliiping coins to make his decisions. I am pretty sure he was
named after a US president (as was his friend) and 95% sure he was called
"Lincoln". I also think that "sands" was in the title.
I remember the book cause my mother had a book sale and I sat reading it for
an hour or two before someone bought it and was most upset at the time, well
25 years on I'd like to finish the book!
I am sure the book has a scene where the main character also decides, via a
coin, whether or not to rescue a woman who is in some danger either a cage
or a cell or something.

It's also notable because every chapter starts in the middle of the
action, and then goes back to tell you what happened.
