Ok, these are a pretty eclectic collection of stories, but like you said,
your question was sorta vague. ;)

Arthur C. Clarke, An Ape About the House, 1962, included in the collection:
Tales of Ten Worlds.
A household get a Superchimp, genetically engineered to be a household
servant. The lady of the house teaches her to paint.

Arthur C. Clarke, The Road to the Sea (originally Seeker of the Sphinx),
1950, included in the collection: Tales of Ten Worlds.
About an explorer finding a magnificent piece of artwork.

Clifford D. Simak, The Spaceman's Van Gogh, 1964, in the collection: Worlds
Without End.
A man tracks an eccentric painter from planet to planet to find his last
dying painting.

Fred Saberhagen, The Smile, 1979, in the collection,s The Ultimate Enemy and
The Berserker Wars.
An artist gets the final revenge on his murderers by forging a famous statue
and placing a robotic brain into it, programmed to kill them when it hears
their voices.

Fred Saberhagen, Patron of the Arts, 1965, from The Berserker Wars.
An embittered artist meets a berserker machine and paints for it, eventually
changing his outlook on life.

Willard Marsh, Everyone's Hometown is Guernica, 1964.
A struggling artist rescues a stray kitten, then is inspired to paint an
incredible painting. He goes to sell it to a gallery, but gets cold feet,
then takes it back home and messes with it, ruining it and losing his shot
at immortality.

Ummmmm....... some novel about the moon........ I think it's Lunar Descent,
by Allen M. Steele, has an eccentric artist who makes sculptures from old
junk.

Hmmm, also remember some story about a couple of explorers who set out to
try to get access to a tremendous horde of alien art treasures guarded by a
deadly robot. The first guy answers all the robot's questions correctly and
still gets killed, so the second tries answering only in nonsense and gets
access. No idea who wrote it, sorry. :(

Haven't finished it yet, but there's a few pages about an artist who
makes extremely delicate glass constructs in Alastair Reynolds'
_Absolution Gap_, the final novel of the Inhibitor sequence. It's not
out in the US yet though, but available through Amazon.co.uk.

Most of this thread has long since expired from my server. Were aerogel
sculptures mentioned?

Not a centerpiece of the work, but "The Silkie" notes that the
Uebermenschen "Silkies" ideas of harmony involve uncomfortably close tone
clusters.

piggybacking....

In (I believe) Ceteganda Miles Vorkosigan gets his leg badly burned by
a high-tech artistic sculture that uses strong magnetic fields.
(Miles has very fragile bones that have a lot of metal in them).

Very good, IMO. The foicus is on the human charactrers, though.

Good early Clarke.

I Liked this one, but it isn't great IMO.

Yes, the collection is called 'The Night Gallery'. I liked the scenes
where it is described, and later where it is used in a way the artist
never planned, for *spoiler*.

I vaguely remember reading that one at least 15 years ago, but can't
recall the author or title either. Any suggestions. It was in a
collection, i'm almost sure.

Some other SF featureing art in one way or another:

Jack Vance: "The Potters of Firsk" About the search by alien potters
for the perfect glaze for a bright yellow shade. Nice.

Jack Vance: "The Moon Moth". A very art-centered culture. Important
ones include music (instrumental and sung) and mask-making, but others
are mentioned. Read this.

Jack Vance: _Showboat World_ The art is Drama in various forms, as
well as the art of the con-man.

Lloyd Biggle: "The Tunesmith" (music) , _The Light that Never Was_
(Painting and visual arts) "Orphans of the Void" (Song, but other
arts are mentioned), "Well of the Deep Wish" (TV), and several others.

James Blish: "A Work of Art" (about "the man who was not R. Strauss").
See also his essay in _The Tale that Wags the God_ on "The Arts in
SF".

Isaac Asimov: "The Secret Sense" (in _The Early Asimov_). The art is
keyed to a non-human senese.

Isaac Asimov: "Dreaming is a Private thing" (mental dramas)

Isaac Asimov: The Mule's music in _Foundation and Empire_

Isaac Asimov: "Gold" (Drama/writing)

JRRT: Feanor's creation of the Silmarils as a supreame act of art (in
the Silmarillion); "Leaf by Niggle" (painting); Sam's gardens; bilbo's
and frodo's poems; Gandalf's fireworks; Gimli's discussion of the
enhancement of the caverns in Helm's Deep; see also his essay "on
Fairy Stories" for the sense in which the elves symbolize the basic
artistic drive.

Argh! I can't believe that i forgot Vance. Just to add: *The Anome*
and *The Brave Free Men* feature the equivalent of wandering jazz
musicians on a planet. The instrument descriptions are pretty
amusing.

There's also a Vance book entitled, i think, *Space Opera*, which is
about a supremely snobbish and rich pair who decide to bring High
Culture to the beknighted backwater planets. Some of the
intended audience are not human, and react according to their own
customes. Very funny, in Vance's usual dry way.

[other good stuff snipped]

More sf about music, or something like it: _The Gossamer Axe_ by
Gail Baudino. (Whatever happened to her?) _War for the Oaks_ by
Emma Bull. _Cart and Cwidder_ by Dianna Wynne Jones. That Asimov
story about Martian electric-field art.

Planetary design: _Isle of the Dead_ by Roger Zelazny.

Painting: _Hour of the Horde_ by Gordon Dickson.

A google search on [science fiction fantasy anthology music] turned up
Rambles (rambles.net), a magazine devoted to sf and folk music.

What I was trying to get info on was _The Horns of Elfland_, edited by
Kushner, Sherman, and Keller, an anthology of stories about music and
magic.

Free association on "sf" and "folk music" bgings me to
RA MacAvoy's "Tea with the Black Dragon" and "Twisting the Rope".

Not the most involved with the music perhaps, and might fit "fantasy"
more than sf, but Mayland Long has the most exquisite fingers...
