I'm trying to identify a book form my misspent youth. Of course I don't
remember either author or title but probably published in the late 1950s or
early 1960s. The story is about a retired USAF officer who is taken aboard
an automated ship (no crew, just an android captain who looks like a human
male) for reasons I also don't remember. The captain is destroyed and our
hero can't find a backup system. Eventually he just says something like
reserve captain to the bridge and a new android shows up who looks like a
human female. At this point they go on to finish the plot.

Other small detail: the ship has what is described as an instinct to fight.

Alas, that's about it. Anyone recognize it?

Thanks,
Ed

I think I recognize that one. Early Gordon Dickson. The android captain
refers to itself as "The Ever-Perfect Lieutenant" and the relief pilot is
"The Emergency Mate".

That doesn't give you the title, but it may get you a little closer.
