Which is a big pity, because it's a story many of us would like to read
(as long as he can tell it in less than 1500 pages! 8>. )

There is no prequel.

Though there is a short story which happens prior to it in that
Universe. I'm blanking on the title: it appeared in Popular Science
in 1998. It was just OK.

The unprintable prequel *does* exist, but it's even worse than
"THE PRACTICE EFFECT." ( of course, "THE PRACTICE EFFECT"
*does* get better every time you read it, but still.... )
At any rate, I seem to recall that the Vanilla Needle story
did finally see print, or was scheduled to, a while back,
so you'll probably get pointers galore on it.
There is no such story.
Brin does this often -- writing characters' reactions to a really really
good scene he didn't have to bother writing. It got downright obnoxious
in _Heaven's Reach_.
I suppose some would call this "stimulating the reader's imagination".

Ouch! Bad humor alert. Try again; I'm sure the joke
will be funnier.
C.
Brin stated (at a Long Island Convention) in 1987 that he did not intend
to write a prequel to _Sundiver_. He wanted his hero to be a guy
with a pretty interesting resumé, so he gave him one.

No, there isn't, as several others have pointed out. I'd just like to
add that the answer to your question is in the FAQ.
