Again, thank you for the kind words that we are sure are in your e-mail
but we didn't have the time to confirm by reading it in detail.
_Emergence_, David R. Palmer.

_Emergence_, by David R. Palmer, I think. I can't put my hands on my
copy right now to confirm it though.
And it turns out she has a telepathic link to her macaw, also.

Have GNU, will travel.

David Palmer, EMERGENCE
Yep. Most people seem to think Emergence was much better
than his other novel, Threshold, but I think the opposite is true.
I never felt like I was supposed to take Threshold seriously,
but reading Emergence it seemed that Palmer thought he
was writing about a reasonable character instead of a
ridiculously unrealistic uber-hero.

Am I the only one who don't remember this bit?

Without spoilers, they discover it afer she travels really quickly.
IIRC, Terry (the bird) yells "Wheee!".

Ah, thanks.
If only I still have it around, sure would like to read it and Threshold
again.

Yeah. Lots of people say that Emergence was him doing Heinlien, but
Threshold was him doing Smith -- I enoyed it.

I hereby suggest that gays form "marriage" corporations too!

No corporate agreement can change who your next of kin is. Taxation
law vis a vis corporations and marriages is quite different.
>No corporate agreement can change who your next of kin is.
It _can_, however, override next-of-kin assumptions regarding
your wishes.

The author can hardly be blamed for this coincidence; I presume that
_Emergence_ predates the Honor Harrington series.
John Savard
That's correct, _Emergence_ was Palmer's first novel, published in
1984. The Honorverse books began being published in 1992. If there
was idea propagation, the direction of influence seems fairly clear
from the dates.

What is trumps what should be, and what we expect, every time.
There was a sequel to Emergence recently serialized in Analog.
So Palmer got it from the Telzey Amberdon stories.
Dunno about that, but apparently _Emergence_ was originally a novella
published in Analog in 1981. Analog must like it. I read the 1984
novel, thought it was good, but don't find that world interesting
enough to revisit in a sequel; tastes vary.
I don't think that's a new idea within the real world, iow I think
it's already been done more than once.
In the _Emergence_ world the AA's in multiple marriages still have to
deal with the AB's[1], and that same issue might be equally
problematic for today's gays (not to mention that the "normals"
haven't died off yet).
[1] AA's without the benefit of privileged upbringing, ie potential
evil overlords.

I see Deustche Börse is up three points. Maybe it's time to find a
German girlfriend?
In the real world corporations don't let you file joint income tax
returns, can not determine who is next of kin, cannot create a spousal
privilege of communication...
